I have multiple sponge filters in every tank. if u pair sponge filters with a deep blue hurricane 5 pump your tanks are fully protected. u can hook up 2 sponges to one hurrican pump which is around 60 or 70 dollars on amazon and if the power goes out the hurricane pump will continue to run the sponges for 14 to 28 hours depending on what setting u have it on. great protection for show fish or any fish. you don't have to do a thing, it runs on outlet power then switches to battery when needed. so count me as a yes for sponges

Hi Dan I have been looking at some interesting pumps. Have a look at this one and tell me what you think. This is the one I am looking at getting. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002JPM91W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&psc=1

Hi Adam.. this is fantastic. I have been looking for pumps like that and couldn't decide which one I wanted. This sounds amazing and wow I could have used it over the weekend. We had an 18 hour power outage!! I am definitely going to get a couple of them for my show tanks. I know it would certainly put my at ease the next time I face a power outage!! Thanks so much for sharing... Experience speaks so much louder!!

One of the best modifications you can ever do to one of these's air sponge filters is actually getting a bit of PVC piping and connecting it to a hydroponic pump because I found that it gives you amazing filtration and performance and it does a lot more better job of collecting good bacteria
Ryan Walter
Ryan Walter - 6 years ago
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl hi Deb well what I've done is I've gotten myself a hydroponic pump right which has an Inlet and an outlet and what I've done is I've connected a bit of plastic tubing to the inlet part of the air sponge filter which sits at the bottom which pumps out about 550 L per hour and what I've done on the other side of the tubing is connect that Inlet part to the hydroponic pump

Beautiful aquarium. I agree with the sponge filter. You should spray paint your background black or mirror effect. Would really set off your tank. You just tape off the outside & paint onlu the back of the outside glass.

Hi Montana.. Welcome to my channel. I painted it blue for a new look. All my other tanks are black. I did end up painting this one black as well. I've never thought of mirror that would be cool to see. I would want to see it before I did though. Thanks for coming by! =D ♥♥

Hello thank you for this video, it was very interesting. I like you you recite the information in a calm soothing voice. Two things I'd suggest to change. In the opening, your head is very close to the camera and I cannot see your body. It appears your big talking head is disembodied and it was slightly frightening. The other change is that you spend many minutes talking about the sponge filter, but the camera shows your tank which doesn't have one. This is like doing a commercial for Oreo cookies but only showing ritz crackers. It was strange. Other than those two things I very much enjoyed. Thank you.

Hi FF.. thanks for the suggestions. Advice is always appreciated. I have improved the talking head thing.. I just want head shots - that's the only reason. As for the filter yes I was talking about learning all this great info about sponge filters that I intend to add them to all my tanks. I was just passing on what I had learned and wanted to share.. since then I have the in all my tanks.. I really appreciate your candid outlook on my video. We can only improve ourselves and our videos with constructive criticism. =D btw.. I subbed your channel! ♥♥

Consider looking into a hamburg matten filter (HMF) or a corner HMF for those that dislike the look of standard sponge filter. HMF works exactly like a sponge filter but with greater surface area. Secondly, they allow one to hide their unsightly aquarium equipments (i.e. heater, etc.) The majority install their HMF to the side of the tank which still allows their equipment to be visible, but if one do a few modifications and add a few extra sponge padding down the vertical sides, they would be better able to conceal their equipment. Another way would be to have the HMF at the back wall of the tank.
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl

Hi Straw.. this is great info.. I actually made my filters with the Poret foam from Swiss Tropicals. I'm very happy with it. I did have a looke at the HMF as well. Another great product. Thanks for sharing. =D

DebTim A CANADIAN Girl - 7 years ago
Hi Paul.. ok so I went over and subbed your channel. I don't usually do that where there's no content but I want to see your tanks.. so upload and share.. I"m your first subscriber!! I don't have algae in my show tanks at all. The cichlids munch on it so it doesn't get out of hand and a couple of my tanks have plecos or bottom feeders that seem to do a good job. Now my little fish room has algae in a few of the tanks. I clean them of it all the time. =(

DebTim A CANADIAN Girl
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl - 7 years ago
Hi Beast.. I can see that.. That's part of the reason I don't want a 3D background. It takes more space than I'm willing to give up. I plan on having my show tanks on sponge filters soon.. I don't like how they look but I'm sure I can come up with a way to hide them. =D

Hello Deb. Sponges have proven to be a must in my tanks. Just recent after a water change my AC 70 did not turn on and I didn't notice due to multitasking on other tanks. It stood that way for days because I left the house for a few days. Upon arriving home my heavily stocked tank was just the way I left it. Everyone was fine and dandy. I normally add two sponges just in case one is needed for an emergency qt, or hospital tank. Now I make sure everything is running properly before moving on to the next project. Could've been a bad day for me if the sponges weren't in this tank. So all my tanks have 2. Better to be safe than sorry. Have a good week my friend and keep tanking.

Sponge filters cost between $10 -20 and then you need an air pump for another $10-20. And remember that's it.. you don't have to by filter media or pads or anything else. Now for larger tanks of course the price goes up with the size. It's a good money saver even then.

I think it's a great idea. I was actually considering installing 2 in my 150 gallon tall African cichlid tank. I seem to have over cleaned my system. I cleaned out all three canister filters (2fx6 and a sunsun hw304b) while also doing a water change. So I might take the sponge filters into consideration so I can reestablish my beneficial bacteria as well as help manage some oh the waste.

DebTim A CANADIAN Girl - 7 years ago
Hi Jonathan.. I have done that before too. Not thinking about the ramifications. Having sponge filters running is an excellent way to seed a new tank or reseed on that was too thoroughly cleaned. I am going to add a couple to all my show tanks. Just make sure you get good reticulated sponges so you have optimal flow for your large tanks. They will also allow your canister media and filters to last much longer. Win Win

I have one in my pea puffer tank with an aquaclear for flow. I need to get one for my 20 long because when when I go on vacation, I don't want the power to go out and then my house sitter has to deal with my hobs. I'll just have her unplug them.
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl - 7 years ago
Hi April.. nice to see you sweets! No kidding .. there's not risk of burning up a filter that ran dry eh? Great plan. The only thing that can sometimes be a nuisance is the air pump can wear out or get loud as it ages. Still way cheaper than all the filter media we spend money on!! =D

Hi Bri.. That's exactly what I did as well. I was really surprised at what I found as well but it makes great sense and makes financial sense as well =D I have never used chemical filtration only mechanical.. this is a brilliant way to have that added punch and have seeded filters when you need them =D Thanks for the awesome feedback Bri.. have a great day!!

Good morning Deb, I love my sponge filters. I always have some running. Also, its super nice to have in emergencies. Tank crash, new tank, etc.
Also, the peacocks and haps are getting some good color.

Hi Ry.. no actually I go down to the stone mason here in town. He has a large junk-rock pile and lets me take what I like for free. He does granite counter tops and stone mantels..stuff like that. It's awesome stone. =D Check around for a rock yard like that.. they usually have a pile of cast offs that they will give away! =D

I have been running my 75g with 7 sponge filters for a year now and it has had times of absurd overstocking but held on great. After one year, what i find is that the mechanical part of the filtration is very sub-par and i have had to place some powerheads with sponge intake to take care of that issue. Of course, you are right, they are ugly. :P

Hi Swampy.. for fry I use a denser sponge. Just make sure to check what the sponge is rated for. The more porous the sponge the higher the flow rate. =D You must keep us updated!

Here's the link from Amazon that I get. https://www.amazon.ca/Hydro-IV-Sponge-Pro-Filter/dp/B0002602SC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487167373&sr=8-1&keywords=hydro+sponge+filter+pro
