You're an annoying clown and a waste of a life. A grown man making videos about fish and mocking people that can't afford to spend unnecessary money on fish by calling cheap items "Ghetto". You really should get a life, I saw this video in the thumbnail and decided to watch it because I thought it would be an informative video about fish, instead I watched a gangly, awkward man make a fool out of himself by being obnoxious and loud. And Anyone that comments on this defending him, probably sucks his cock.......

Finnex is good. very low wattage for great PAR levels. I have an apogee 500 that corrects for LED high red, to measure exact PAR. the finnexes are also pretty cheap. I also have a horticultural LED system that is insane. the amount of par for wattage is fucking insane, which for plants, is the most important thing. my filtration system is just an air pump and sand bed diffusion/nitrogen cycle. I do think lighting needs to be good, and should be the only place people never skimp. I love 5500 K metal halides for growing plants, but they automatically translate about 40% of the electricity into heat, which is a waste. I have a few T%'s and they are good also, but VHO blows them out of the water. VHOs are my personal favorite (prob LEDS would be now though) for growing hard corals in aquaria. They have a great spectrum and the internal reflectors are great. Awesome color.

Whisper. Been running one for the last 7 years. One local store has carried them since the early 90s. The absolute most reputable piece of equipment. Also, another local store known as one of the best in Texas emphasizes biological filtration and uses only 2 sponge filters on every holding tank which is 29 gallons for every type of fish form africans to discus, no problems. I also prefer incandescent hoods bc I have more bulb options.

Hey Dustin, my favourite(I'm Canadian that shit is spelled properly) piece of ghetto aquarium equipment is my homemade Co2 reactors. I make them with Dr Pepper bottles, air hose, and silicone. I even have one set up with three 2 liter bottles for my 110 Gallon planted aquarium and it works great.

Aquaclear 100,50, and 20 also a whisper 2-10 and 20i internals work great but have been looking on going to a sump for both the 55g and 25g and leaving the 10g alone as it's just a betta fish in there with a small pleco

Great video~! my fav is a 1.5 inch pvc pipe I plugged 1 end with a sponge and filled it with ceramic rings.  Been filtering away for so long I don't remember, water clear and crisp and most importantly, the fish are happy.

I find with my older equipment regardless of how much I like it eventually wears out, particularly the pump motors on drop filters. Heaters can also be a problem & dangerous for the fish * the thermostat doesn't cut off & the tank over heats, if you're not right on top of that it can be a disaster (the fish are hanging around the surface maybe a casualty or two on the bottom). I have had to do emergency water changes to cool water off in a hurry. Aside from that I generally stick with my tried & true strategies- double filtration meaning an external and a gravity drop filter hanging off the side (if one fails the other is backing it up) keep an eye on the output * flow. Check temperature at least once a day, do a 50% water change at least every 6 weeks, ideally once per month, I find with newer equipment either it works great or within two months it isn't performing well, at which point I change up to tried & true systems.

Whats up Dustin!
Been watching your videos for a couple weeks now, thanks for posting.  I just got back into tanks, my first planted tank, a 45 gallon and I bought a MarineLand LED strip. It's fancy technology lol (nighttime moon light is bad ass)...I supplement with Excel, and Iron, like the guy at the store says...but not getting the results I had hoped for.  Maybe it's the light? Not that my plants are dying, they are just kinda yellowing and don't look strong.  What are your thoughts on that light? Go easy on me, I dropped like $250 on it lol.
Thanks!

Also have a floating glass mercury thermometer from when I was a little kid...born in '64.  It's from the seventies, man!  My mom setup a ten gallon tank when I was around eight to ten years old for us kids to look at.  I was bit by the "aquarium bug" then and have always had at least one tank since then. When I was in my twenties mom gave me that thermometer...she kept it for some reason and I never got rid of it. Nor will I! Unless, of course, the price is right!

Duetto 50 and 100 submersible filter, for up to 10 gallons, flow control, with a venturi for outside air mixed with the water, you can damn near atomize the air coming into the tank, which is super dope. Stupid easy to clean, individual compartments for your filter media, so you don't have to hunt for brand specific filter media. Unfortunately, Marineland stopped making them years ago, thank the Lord for ebay.

I'm a huge marineland fan. Since I was 16 I've been running penguin biowheel filters. I still use the first 100 series I got for my first 10 gallon on my current 20 gallon. That's a 12 year old filter. I also run 2 350 series on both my 55s. Also I love the cascading sound.

I have a filter, air pumps, and lights that I received form another hobbyist in 1985, they were old then. They work very good and do what I want them to do. I have a 29 year old air pump running and heater on my 5.5, I bought that new, still working.

I have two Challenger  air pumps. One I got from a hobbyist, when I got her 20 long. The other one I bought. The tank came with an old internal filter, which I still have and use.

Great video! I have had at least one Magnum 350 filter running since 1985. Back when the magnet actually spun in the base around the impeller. Great filter and hasn't let me down yet and they are not fancy. Thanks again!

Thanks- I would like to see this style of impeller- Its typically the make or break part for most of the HOBs I run....costs as much as a new one to replace them

Eheim canister filters now known as the classic (5+ years) aquaclear HOB filters (10+ years of use) and sponge filters along with cheapo analog timers from walmart that sell for like 2.99 for all my lights

I've been using an under gravel system for at least 12 years. Same gravel, same tank, sometimes using power heads and sometimes useing an air pump. I've moved the tank about 6 times and have never needed to cycle it and never lost a fish in the move!
sendtorich
sendtorich - 7 years ago
in the past i have been able to get a lot of the debris out from under the plate by removing the risers and capping all but one, then siphoning the water out of the exposed hole with a 5/8" piece of flex tubing through a strainer and then into a sump with a pond pump replacing the strained water back into the aquarium - just be careful because the 5/8" tubing moves a LOT of water (and anything else that gets in it's way i.e. fish, gravel, etc.) *TIP: you want to START the siphon with the tubing already down in the hole and never remove it until you have broken the siphon.
wolfdj21
wolfdj21 - 10 years ago
What are the down sides of under gravel system? The only argument I've heard is the fact that the poop gets ducked down into the gravel. It seems like a good source for bio filtration and as long you are good about water changes\gravle vac you don't get much build up of debris. In the future I do plan on switch to a canister filter or a sump. Thanks for any info you have for me. I've been keeping fish for a long time but haven't had a good source of info until I found the youtube community this past winter. I have broken just about every rule of fish keeping!
wolfdj21
wolfdj21 - 10 years ago
I also use a HOB and and a diy surface skimmer currently. Over the years I've tried several different combinations of filters with the undergravel. I just figure that it is a ton of biological filtration. When I was younger I didn't know better and didn't take very good care of my tanks anyways so i couldnt really tell any differnce. thanks to the info on youtube I've learned my lesson. I have an air pump running right now on one end of my tank, it is no different than using air power sponge filters. It's make a whole lot of micro bubbles though so I think I am going to remove it when I have time.
Dustin's Fish Tanks
Dustin's Fish Tanks - 10 years ago
really? I was actually gonna mention that this was one type that was a dinosaur in my opinion.  Are you saying you sometimes use an airpump? How does it work without one running constantly? (doesn't it need the pull?)  if it's working for you- roll with it. I tried one on an over stocked goldfish and and piranhas and abandoned them once i got a whisper HOB- but rock it if you've got it!

The AquaClear HOB filters that I am using are officially "classic" now since Fluval bought out the company and re-branded the same exact filters. Lol! But i don't think i have any "classic" equipment since I'm fairly new to this hobby.

You don't have to buy filter cartridges, simple design easy to customize. Wash the sponge out once a month (just wash under tap, plenty of bacteria in the biomedia)
Also, cut and fit a piece of filter floss between the sponge and biomedia for great water polishing.

Yes, the classics are the green tube looking ones.
The best eheim filters by far in my opinion.
Would never get  a modern eheim over them.
The only good think about progress, is good bargains to the ones who are smart and don't get crazy about the next best thing out in the market.
I think things get improved to be made worse because in the old days, things were made to last a lifetime, today they are made to last until the next upgrade arrives.
And that works for everything not just fishkeeping.
