I've been growing plants in a 3.7 gallon tank for over a month. Plant growth is happening, but I'm not seeing any pearling. Plants include Glossostigma elatinoides, utricaluaria graminifolia, staurogyne repens, cryptocoryne undulatea red, and bacopa caroliniana

I love black water. it's mysterious, almost primordial, plus all my fish love it. their behvior is more natual and relaxed, plus they eat better.

I gotta voted for Cory's tank cuz I LOVE the wild Betta. I don't care for the look of the water BUT I still have Catapa leaves in all my Betta tanks cuz THEY love it - ya know?

Hearing Joel say Galaxy Rasboras, aren’t they “technically” the Celestial Pearl Danios? Not trying to pick things apart but I’m not sure what to call them myself when talking to other fishy people lol

If we're getting technical, call them Danio margaritatus . Otherwise people use common names, CPDS, celestial pearl danios, galaxy rasboras etc.

I would argue it's cheaper to join for a year to GSAS and watch the videos of each talk, but the in-person chat (he and I talked for about 45 minutes or so) was priceless. He's an awesome guy as you well said and so fun to talk to and learn from.

Only issue I find with catappa leaves is that they break down super quickly. Magnolia leaves are becoming easier to find, and they last a lot longer. Helpful if you want to combine aesthetics of a long lasting leaf with a slower release Tannin source.

Love the black! I’ve used 4” thick sphagnum peat moss (sustainably harvested) as planting substrate before, and I’m totally in love with tannins.

I like blackwater & wood. I feel like I didn't get to see either tank that well. Temporarily going with Joel's tank as it looked more natural. Lets see what heppens after growout!

What is the best substrate for a planted tank? ADA vs Eco complete vs Stratum vs Flourite vs organic potting soil?

TheGolemHunter I think it is important to note that any of these substrates will eventually run out of nutrition. So eventually you will need additional fertilizer.

Joe Rosario I think Ada. Ada seems like the top class of aquarium products. Their tanks, lights, substrate and pipes look professional and nice. I think the top two are Ada and stratum even though I use flourite (which is a good substrate) but people use stratum most of the time and Ada is just good. Comes down to $.

I was split on voting. I hadn't seen many dark water tanks so I initially liked Cory's better. But looking again at Joel's I realized that's what I'd want in my living room. So I vote Krispy Creme! Also thanks for answering my question :) Always helpful guys thanks.
