Hi I'm new to the aquarium hobby and I wanted to start out with a 10gal tank and I was wondering if the fish I'm getting would do good with each other and how many I should keep in the tank noted it will have two filters one with a 3 stage filter and a regular sponge filter.
Animals:
African dwarf frog-1
Gourami-1
Mollies-2
Platties-2
Neon tetras-4
Shrimp-2
Bristlenose pleco-1
Haha I know its alot but I really need help deciding how munch I can actually keep or put in the tank.
And also which type of substrate is good for live plants?
Vernae Lynch

Kate Legthorns what size tank do you recommend for that amount of fish
Kate Legthorns
Kate Legthorns - 6 years ago
Vernae Lynch that's way too many fish for a 10 gallon. I would suggest doing more research on the type of fish you want to get because all of the fish you listed either need to be in much larger tanks, or in a school of three or more. You also need to cycle a tank before adding fish. There's tones of videos about it online, just keep doing research

angels and discus would look wicked together in a Amazon River Basin theme with a waterfall palladium
Deep Blue
Deep Blue - 6 years ago
CowboyStud092984 I don't doubt it, but is that an exception or the norm. I think Joey did talk about why they aren't kept together in the gallery, but I might be mistaken. At my LFS, apparently the discus killed the angelfish, where on forums they say the angelfish usually out complete the discus. It may be the norm you can keep them together but people with bad expiences scare off potential "experiments". An interesting thought, but I have generally observed the two species to be kept separate at Fish Stores, on Forums, and at Public Aquariums.
CowboyStud092984
CowboyStud092984 - 6 years ago
Deep Blue They can as they are both blackwater fish and do really well together... My grandmother kept both together for years...
Deep Blue
Deep Blue - 6 years ago
CowboyStud092984 As neat as that would be, I don't think they can generally live together, it's probably been tried many times and not worked out for one of the species.

At times I thought I felt water on top of my head; and for some reason there was some wetness there. One day I looked up when I felt water and caught my Archer fish spraying water up in the air landing water on my head. The Archer fish continue doing this whenever I was nailing to service the sump under the main tank.
I don't know if this is how archers play. Has anyone else experienced this type of behavior from archers?

(A brackish water tank with three kinds of scats, mono's, tiger silver dollars, archers, puffers, xcetera. Makes a very interesting and somewhat exciting display). If you don't mind the difference in water chemistry and Salt creep.
Do a brackish display King

Slow mo arowana feeding is supreme!! Def. best to have 2 nets!! Little tip its easier to catch rainbows in the middle of the night when they are sleeping. Get a big net though so you can catch as many as you can in the first couple swoops and move slow so you dont wake them to fast.

Joey I am new to your channel and I love watching what you do. I have noticed you seem to be drawn to large flashy impressive species. I have also noticed that the majority of the fish in your gallery are cichlids. So I had a thought for your dental American tank that would be radically different. Why not do sailfin mollies in the central america tank. It would be bold and impressive while fitting your goal to inspire people to do something in the hobby they have relatively easy access too. They are mollies but sailfins aren't exactly beginner fish either. This means they present enough challenge to keep them interesting as well. To control population you could add a relatively non aggressive central American Cichlid.

Honestly, being a species of Synodontis, it may not help to add any dither fish just because of how extremely secretive they can be when young, but if you would like to give it a try, it is possible It could help. I tried that a while back with my Synodontis eupterus but it wouldn't help. With age it should become more outgoing, but either way, some neon tetras would make make a beautiful addition to almost any tank.

i don't know the exact misures of yout tank, but if it's mine i'll prefer to try a community of cichlids, istead of one big couple of giant fishes.
If the space is enaugh, i'll try with two salvini and a group of thoryichtys. Also vieja are pretty nice fish, but very big tho.
If you go for the couple.. i think octofasciatum would be nice.
As dyter fishes, big livebearers like X. helleri should do fine.
Also.. i know you're not in the "breed fish mood", but with all that tanks i think should be a good idea try to use one for Madagascarian cichlids. They're majestic and dangered in nature, so inhome breeding success is very important for them.
Also victoria lake ones, if u can find "pure" ones, should be very interesting to have. And they looks even better than malawi ones

120 gallons with a 4 x 2 footprint, I would go with the more medium sized cichlids if you're looking to create more of a community. Any amph/guapote, etc will get too large and aggressive in that size of a tank, as well as most vieja. I would probably stay away from pairs as well, unless they're meant to be dithers (firemouths, honduran red points, etc). I'd personally go with a few Thorichthys Aureus/ellioti (both cousins of the common firemouth but better looking IMO), and a pair of Nicaraguensis cichlids (although this might cause conflicts due to their being a pair). IMO, that's your best bet for a relatively peaceful group of CA cichlids who won't get too big for that tank and will make for a nice display. Keep in mind, it'll be incredibly difficult to keep any plants alive with any CA cichlids.

Looks like the census on here is Oscar's I see a lot of people asking for them I think it would look pretty cool, plus you could also throw some convicts and Jack Dempsey's in there but Oscar's would look real cool just saying and I believe in one of your other videos you mentioned something about Oscars
