this is good video. im in process of cycling the tank. trying to gain more knowledge on cycling process. im confused when i research online. some say it takes 4-6 weeks to cycle and some say 2 weeks . So are they both right? now how about a planted tank?does a planted tank normally take longer? i am starting a tank at home now. mainly in the tank there will be african dwraf frogs.

In my experience, white slime grows instead of algae. However, I discovered Dr Tim's Waste Away for Fresh Water Aquariums can fight the white slime & I finally got some good green algae that came in w/ the water from a local fish store

Thank you so much for this video! I set up my planted tank just under 2 weeks ago and have been going mad not seeing any nitrates, wondering whether I need different test strips etc. But my plants have been blooming. The java ferns are producing little baby leaves, and all the plants are just vibrant and green and growing really beautifully.

amazing video! super informative! as a beginner into the hobby I started watching as many YouTube videos as I can about starting up a tank... following nature's way like you described makes so much more sense to me than all the numbers and tests explained in most videos...very good way to simplify the concept! thanks for sharing!

This is super useful, as always. I have some questions about kind of the inverse of the info. I would like to introduce live plants into an established tank (about a year) that has happy and healthy fish. Are there any major concern I should be aware of before trying? I'm considering setting up a small secondary tank to start with live plants out of the gate, with the idea of using plants that grow well into the main tank, bit this video makes me think that would be pointless (though I still may do it to use as a potential place to put any fish that look ready to lay eggs or give birth).

So, should I just put some plants in? Is there any major risks to the fish? The substrate is well established both with bacteria, and waste, so it seems that a root based plant would have a field day. I'm really unclear on CO2 issues with plants, if an injector is required or not, etc.

It seems like worst case would be the plants just didn't grow, but from what I'm understanding is that even in that case I wouldnt be putting the fish in any major danger.

Is that kind of right?

Aquarium Co-Op - 6 years ago
Sounds like you've got it. I would just plant your main tank assuming the fish aren't plant eaters etc. Not much risk and lots to gain from that.

Hi, i'm wanting to start up a live 20lt/5 Gal betta aquarium. I'm wondering if i don't need a master kit (PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate)
and if i could get away with just a PH and Ammonia kit,
i can also go every week/two week to get my water tested at my pet store :)
so is it if the plants are growing really fast its good to stick a fish into it?
of coarse i'd do weekly water changes, but would it work just with a betta, so not to much bio load for the tank, Thanks :)

Apartments that... My question is...... How about I not take off the rock wool from a newly bought , say.. an Anubius? Plant it into the substrate just as is in the pot? Will it do well?

Hi Cory! First off I love your videos, they have been invaluable. I'm wondering if you could help me with something. I started a topfin 5g kit tank last week with live sand, two 7.5" cheap LED strips, anacharis, java fern, red crypt, petite nana, small piece of salvinia and bamboo, 1 female betta and a baby tiger nerite. I lifted the tank top about an inch for better air flow. My filter has a sponge, floss and some biomax.

My questions are, are the plants competing with the biomax for filtration? I wish I'd seen this video a long time ago and I would have gotten more plants and less filtration. Should I alter the filter somehow? And, the anachris is dying or melting/turning transparent. I read it does better in cooler temps. Should I just take it out and get something else like wisteria or moneywort, or should I give it a chance? If it continues to decompose will this mess up the cycle? I'm reading .25 ammonia and 0 nitrates/nitrites. Thank you for everything you do!
CoffeeLiberal
CoffeeLiberal - 7 years ago
Wow thank you so much for such a quick reply!! No, I haven't introduced any fertilizer yet as the local store said to wait a couple weeks. Should I start doing that? If so, what's the difference between the reg Easy Green and the nano Easy green? And should that be good or should I get the liquid CO2 and Iron supplements? Good to know about the filter! I won't mess with that then.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
Are you fertilizing your plants? Plants vs filtration, it's really the same thing, so I wouldn't be worried about one out competing the other. Mostly you want plants to be pushing forward and consuming as much as they can.

Great video, I have a four gallon planted shrimp tank. I have a carpeting plant a piece of driftwood with java moss tied on, a small anubius nana. Recently my nitrites spiked, where before everything was zero. I did a 25% water change to see if that helps, Im definetly growing algae. The only thing that I did add to the tank were some Celestial Pearl Danio fry. I had to remove them from my other planted 7.5 gallon tank because they were getting eaten by their parents. They are breading in the 7.5 gallon, so I ended up with a total of 8 fry in the 4 gallon. Once they get big enough I'll be adding them to another newly planted 10 gallon tank, that tank is growing plants. Could the fry be putting a strain on the load on the 4 gallon? Im filtering the 4 gallon with two sponge filters only since the red cherry's are breeding. Thanks and keep those videos coming.

Started a new tank! First time plant grower! Just ordered easy green after watching this and the "commercial" on your website. Water and plants are in and a new plant light arrived today to be installed tomorrow. SO...when should I test the water for the first time? Immediately after set up? Daily? Week 2? When?
Will start dosing the fertilizer as soon as it arrives.
Thanks!
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
I personally wouldn't dose till 7 days after I put fertilizer in. Then I'd see how much the tank digested before dosing more. Once you are getting good plant growth, you're good to go with fish stocking.

Hi Cory, great video and I learned a lot from what you explained. I have a 20g long tank split into 3 sections. My question, since liquid testers won't really work, I'm seeing plant growth in my tank and it's been up for a week, is it ok to introduce some snails to the tank? Or should I do a water change and then introduce the snails? The tank will be for 3 Betta only and snails, can I introduce the Betta at the same time with the snails? Or should I wait a week after introducing the snails? Thanks for answering if you do. Love the plants 101 lessons.

I followed this excellent advice on my new 29 Gal.
I set my tank up with a 2" base of Eco Complete, topped with about 3/4" of fine black sand, and a heavily planted aquascape. I added a full 4 oz. bottle of TopFin Readistart Bacteria Starter on that 1st day.
4 days later the water was very cloudy, but began to clear on the 6th day.
10 days after the initial set-up, the water was crystal clear and some of the plants were already showing some new growth. I then performed a 20% water change and the next day I added 10 neon tetras. I lost one of them, but the others thrived. 3 days after that, I added 2 small Cory Cats and they thrived.
My new aquarium is now a living, breathing ecosystem and all my family and friends are awestruck by its beauty.

Wait so I have a 5 day old 10 gallon and have an amazon sword, java fern and anubius. They are litterally growing 2 inches overnight, and no matter how much food I put in my tank my test kit won’t show any ammonia in the water. So are you saying I could add in a betta? And then monitor the ammonia and slowly add more fish?
Clouder

Aquarium Co-Op I wrote this comment last night. Today I woke up and and a brand new leaf on the amazon appeared overnight. And it's already 4 inches long!!! Does this make sense? I have my airstone on full blast is that why? Also, once I add the betta will the tank still cycle and make the beneficial bacteria in the filter?
Thanks for all your help!

If your plants are growing as fast as you say they are, then yes. the small amount of waste from feeding a betta would pale in comparison to the uptake of your current plants.

I have a question? My wife bought my 3 girls each a betta fish! no research on care other than feeding them. I am currently in the process of setting up a planted tank. The tank still has to go through the CYCLE bn new. when I go to switch the fish into the other tank that I will have the water parameters right is it going to kill the fish because they're used to being in what we have is tap water that is hard water? also in the meantime what is the best thing to do with the fish that I currently have?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
Well it depends on the water quality they are in now, but the best thing to do might be to get them into the planted tank asap if they are currently living in a small container for instance. As for different water parameters, bettas handle the change pretty well.

Wait I have a question on Nitrites, Nitrates, and carbon. For certain freshwater fish (adorable pea puffers) need 0 amounts of nitrites and carbon. As well as low as possible nitrate levels where 20 is ideal. So what would be the best way to remove all of these things? Do I add in a bunch of plants to try and elimate all of those three things? I could also wait for algae as well, but should I use plants to remove them? Thanks if anyone replies!

could I take an extra sponge filter out of my goldfish tank and put it in a new tank with having to worry about cycling
Silas Mayes
Silas Mayes - 7 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op Well my goldfish tank is 30 gallons and has an aqua clear 50 HOB. So I figure not a ton. My 2nd tank (10 gallons) plan is to start with 10 cherry shrimp and some snails (not Apple snails) along with some plants probably some java ferns and Amazon swords. So for a light load would extra bacteria from my goldfish tank be good until I add more fish.

Thanks for the response!

REALLY great video on breaking down the process! I went from 75 gallon planted tank tank that I had to sell because I am moving long distance, to a 125 gallon, that I will be starting from scratch in a month and I have a better idea of where to start and what to expect. Keeping it simple is the best way....plants are the best option in aquariums and the best measure of success! Thanks again!

Oh, and i phantom fed the tank with fish food before the fish. easy

I totally agree with the principle. I have a 50 gal. Planted Tank with no filter in it. It has been running for about 2 years now without the filter with only a Wavemaker for circulation. The clarity and cleanliness of the water, I attribute to the plants ability to filter the water, regular partial water change and the usual maintenance, it is about 65% to 70% planted. Of course I do not over stock, I have 8 Pristella Tetras and some Cherry Red Shrimps. I like the principle of Cory on cycling a tank with plants, it just makes sense. We should learn more on how nature works. Sometimes we forget all about the basics and rely so much on modern tech, until you come across a video like this and rethink how we do things.

I'm going to employ your planted tank method of cycling.
Periodically I would like to check perimeters with my API test kit.
How long should I wait after using EASY GREEN, to test; our does it not make any difference.
I understand what you said about tanks being balanced. I'm using the test kit to check the effects of tap water, dead animals, uneaten food, dead plant leaves etc.

great info on just what i was looking for. but of course i could always use more tips:i'm going to start a 10g tank sometime this month or next, and i plan on keeping shrimp and rasboras in it. it is going to be a carpeted tank using dwarf hairgrass (grown from seed) and some moss and i was worried it was going to be a long long process before i could add in any shrimp. From the sounds of it though once i get growth from the hairgrass i can start adding rasboras(maybe 10, or less) shortly after and the shrimp, and any ammonia will be taken care of by the hairgrass and eventually the bacteria? EDIT: i also want to take the tip black trim off a 10g tank, but thats probably a bad idea, right? probably need it, even for 10 gallons?

So how about oxygen. How critical is it for fishes to be alive. For example if I have really great filter and if there is no amonia or nitrat etc.. Am I good to go ? And how to supply oxygen into water column. Via a water pump with airstone or do the plants help releasing oxygen into the water column ?

Sure you can, but in an established tank, it'll convert so fast you wouldn't have a chance too. Also if you always change water, the one day you can't change water fish will die to the ammonia spike etc.

Question 4 ya:

I've heard the people running hi tech planted tanks with pressurized C02 that they need to have set on a timer to turn off at night because plants do not need C02 at night and give off its own C02 etc.

If I have a fully stocked tank with plants covering every inch of my small 29 gallon aquarium, In a closed loop system such as a fish tank, why don't people with a lot of plants need to worry about all those plants giving off tons of C02 on their own that might harm your fish even when external pressurized C02 is already off.

Nobody ever talks about too many plants harming your fish, is it possible?

TY so much Cory(sorry if I wrote wrong name,my english is pathetic) for all the info youre giving ... I started hoby like year ago and spent like4 month fighting algae in new aquarium until I just got borred of fighting with it...ONLY now, thanks to youre words I realize it was not bad sighn at all...and Ottocinclus affinis are doing grate job with it,apart of beeing funny, super cute, simpathic fishies-Just love those little bu
Well,I got questions for you, hope you can spent some time and unsver when you can,cos thats important for me and my fish,But I will understand if you cant-world is very bussy today..well,My aquarium is 120l,it has 1 Betta,6 Danios,10 neons,5 Black Widow tetras and 5 ottos...I was thinking of getting and adding a couple of Peacock gobys, and some guppies(maybe 10-15)..
Well so my first question is in youre opinnion am I adding to much fish in that aquarium?(should I rethink No. of guppies or something?Right now tank looks quite empty, literally feels like it has life but need more ... Fish I have and want to get is tiny,so I dont know, how to count ammount of fish for tank..how that goes? how more or less calculate? How you do it?(Maybe you cud make video on it,so not only me get educated in that, just like idea, for videos...)
Second question, dont know even how to explane or formulate it well, but will try...you see,the aquarium I have is planted, but I dont like it the way it is anymore,so Im getting ready to redo-replant-remake it all(before getting more fish),was thinking one day just get fish out, drain water, get all out and redo,replant-get more plants and so on...what I wanted to know,is if I do so how is the best? just do and thats ok no matter how I do it,or now that I will replant and ad new water will have to recycle? Maybe I should save,a bucked of old watter?or with whats inside of exterior filter(bacteria) will be ok,if I do all in same day, maybe bacteria wont die of so fast? well, sorry for retarded questions, but Im just a begguiner in this and truly love it,and it brakes my heart when something goes wrong with fish(In fight with algae at the begguinning of all, fallowing many wrong advices, was lettal, for some of my fish,so I just want to do the best for them, not torture them, cos of my ignorance and literaly wish to create best life for them possible....So please, please, please if you can unsver-I dont expect or demand it,but have noticed youre trully nice guy and give advices and you trully know a lot abbout fish, hoby and industry it self.. All I can say,is I wish I would have seen this video year ago and would have done better,And aguen TY so MUCH for all you tell us,its very important and very good info you got there,so keep sharring..(And buy the way, sorry for long and bad writen text, its hard to express one self in not own language..And TY ahuead, for taking time to inform us,show us how things should be done) Best luck in all ;)

And I allready bought rocks and more of good soil, wanted to remake hardscape more than nothing, wanted to try soemthing beautiful, try hand in espectacular....and now after seeing all those videos,i got hooked as you imagine...done research on plants, already dreeming...ufff..I feel I will need to get other tank..TY a lot Cory,I think I will fallow youre advice and wont do that then so as I had planed to do and do better..will set up atleast one other-smaller aquarium and when that is cycled will put fish there  and then will do rescape the big one..when that will be cycled fish can return to homeThat sounds like better plan, and what kind a hobyist I would be with just 1 tank?LOL-Im starting to think, thats how everyone gets second tank...LOL...well,Cory,TY for all,Have a grate day, sell a crazy bunch of tanks, fishes, plants and make us more good videos!!! Peacock gobies can be hard on some fish like the betta and guppies. It sounds like you have room for the guppies. As for replanted the tank, I don't recommend emptying it as you'll lose all of your bacteria. instead just replanting things slowly over time will make the changes but keep your bacteria as well.

Hey Cory, my girlfriend and I are looking to start a planted aquarium. She wants to have a heavily stocked and heavily planted tank. We have a 110 gallon tank with 2X T5 lights that are 48" and have 2 actinic bulbs (460nm) and 2 10000K bulbs in each. The tank is 21" tall. We are running 30 gallon sump underneath the tank. The sump is designed with 3 main compartments (was originally uses for saltwater). We plan on using mass amounts of sponge and bio balls/rings in the sump first stage. A refugium in the second and return in the third and this leads me to my question.

What kind of turnover rate does the system need to have? I plan on building an overflow since the tank isn't drilled and I don't have a diamond hole saw. Estimated flow through the drain is 600 gph and return is going to be in the neighborhood of 400 gph. Is this too much, not enough???
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
Not enough circulation in the tank by itself, but enough to run a sump. However I wouldn't run a sump on that tank. A refugium is kind of redundant when you're filling the main tank with plants. I'd recommend a large canister filter instead honestly.

Hi Corey, I have to partially disagree with you. Fish waste has to go through the two steps of bacteria to be handled by plants, and those bacteria have to grow in number to match the amount of animals in your tank. You can get those bacteria from a running filter, which I suppose you with all your tanks can do, but someone who starts with the very first tank should really wait 4 weeks before putting in the first fish (yes, especially the second sort of bacterium reproduces very slowly). Total agreement on the plants though, they add so much to the biotope and environment we are creating in the tank.
Shane Gossman
Shane Gossman - 7 years ago
Cheook A lot of research has actually been done on this and most aquatic plants will use Ammonia and nitrite over nitrates. The easiest form for them to use is Ammonium which is more common in water on the acidic spectrum but present in the alkaline spectrum as well. The main thing about the nitrogen cycle is not that nitrates are better for plants, but that it is safer for your fish.

Would plants be mostly for those who are diligent in using fertilizer though as they need more than just nitrates? Would this mean lower amounts of bacteria and risk of a mini cycle if your plants died off (e.g from missing fert dosing)? Sorry dont keep any plants except anubias

Yes if you were to have plants die off and they were a part of your system, it would leave you with a void when it comes to filtration.

I change 20% water every weekend religiously (more if it get hot out and always use a gravel vacuum to remove as much silt as I can with the small amount of water I am changing) .. I turn the light on when I get up and off when I damn well please.... So.... Ether Cory is 100% right about how plants are a fundamental part of the cycle process (the ecosystem) we are all trying to create or I am full of it... (I'll be happy to send you pic's)

Well yes that, and without information, you're purely guessing. It's like assuming someone who was overweight couldn't have died from starvation. Even if overweight you still start to death just as fast as anyone else. Assumptions are rarely right.

it's 50% true. If you have an abundance of nutrients that would cause algae. If you have not enough nutrients that also causes algae.

Hello how are you, where are you from.
dajoke24

I am still somewhat confused. I have a 20 gallon long with eco-complete and finnex stingray led. My goal is a low tech, heavily planted aquarium. I plan on probably 1 species of a tight schooling fish that don't get too big( white cloud minnows, ember tetras, glowlight danios, harlequin rasboras, etc) Probably 13-19 of them depending on fish. I thought cycling a tank would be putting in a bunch of plants and let the tank sit for a month or so and the ammonia will be 0, the nitrites 0, and the nitrates are low.

Now I understand that isn't possible, but still can't understand how to start up a tank, I don't have anyone to give me gravel or a filter media from an established tank. I am starting from scratch.

People on forums suggest buying pure ammonia and dosing 5 ppm if nothing is in there everyday, or 1-2 ppm if I have plants.I am nervous doing it this way.

After watching your video, I am still confused, so you are suggesting to get a bunch of plants in a tank and dosing liquid fertilizers? If I see growth after a week or two, then add fish? Do I slowly add 3-5 fish if I see it? Then if plants keep growing, keep adding more?

I really need help on every step to setup a tank that will support fish. Can someone please help me? I keep searching on the internet but can't seem to find answers.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
That is what I recommend yes. I think you're making things too complicated on yourself. I explained exactly how to cycle a planted aquarium. Plants are your filter. Bacteria is a distant second. If you grow plants, you won't need to rely on the bacteria. You're taking in information from way to many sources and collating it. You need to pick one method and go with it. They all lead to the same place of a cycled aquarium. If you follow the steps in this video, you will be able to keep fish alive.
dajoke24
dajoke24 - 8 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op I have only 1 good store locally, but some of their information seems a bit odd. However they recommended doing a fish cycle, not specifying water changes and all these things. They gave me about 13 fish to cycle a tank, things like zebra danios, 2 giant danios, and a few red serpae tetras. I did return them to the store after a couple of days and got my money back. But to me, that seemed to be WAY too many fish.

I also don't want to have fish suffer through the cycle. The only other thing they recommended was dosing ammonia but they had no idea how to do it and suggested to research it.

I understand you are busy and apologize with the questions I have asked.

I get mixed opinions on this matter across the the internet, on youtube, forums, websites, etc.

I hear people saying adding plants and then either ammonia or fertz won't work or takes too long. Then some people say use a fish cycle and change the water every day 50%.
Some people say use 5 ppm pure ammonia everyday. But don't specify how adding fish or plants to that works.

I just get confused. So you personally suggest add all the plants I want, then if I see growth add 3-5 fish in the first week. Then if I see growth add another 3-5 fish, and so on?

You didn't specify and elaborate how to exactly cycle a tank. At least I didn't see it.

I guess I will be stumped on this important topic for a while.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
Correct, if you plants are growing they are consuming the waste. Slowly add stock and watch your plants. If you need 1 on 1 help I recommend finding a local fish store that can help you and in return buy your fish from them etc. If you really need 1 on 1 time with me I do skype calls for a fee, but it's probably best for you to seek out local help if you can :)

though when bringing in live plants you usually want to treat or quarantine them, so you don't bring in any unwanted residents aka snails (tho snails are always good for tanks in my opinion), infectious bacteria, parasites, BGA spores. etc.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
I guess I don't see how quarantining plants outside of the main tank when it's a new setup accomplishes anything. if there are parasites they will die off without a host. If there is BGA spores, then you'll have to fix it in the quarantine tank, where you could just fix it in the main tank etc. So I personally don't quarantine the plants when setting up a new tank.

BTW, don't tell anyone but I also use UG filters with aquaclear powerheads. Thank you....

Cory, where can I buy some of that awesome fertilizer? Will it fix the browning & pin holes in my java ferns? Will it add ammonia to my water column? I have a 45 gallon, completely " "cycled" " (the ammonia way) lol. But no plants or fish yet... I was going to move my 7 neon tetras from a 15 gallon this weekend and gradually incorporate my 2 rams, and 7 otocinclus catfish. But now I'm thinking I'll just add my big anubias with algae covered driftwood, wait a week, continuing to add ammonia, solidify the plant and algae, and then put more fish in at one time, to protect the bacteria culture with plenty of ammonia. (Probably the catfish and neons because I'll leave the Rams in the established tank until the new one is SOLID). What do you think?

Great video! What do you think about overstocking in a heavily planted tank? I have a 'well seasoned' 7G with 10 ember tetras. I water change every 2 weeks, but only to clean the filter / remove hormones and replenish hardness as nitrates are always 0 - even when I feed like crazy. Been tempted to add another 10 embers so I can build my stock in preparation for a large display tank I'm planning to setup next year. Water quality doesn't worry me as I change my other tanks much more regularly, but I am concerned about stress due to overcrowding. What's your stance?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
Well yes that's what I was gonna say is there is definitely a point where a tank is too crowded even though chemically it is clean. Where that line is, is hard to say.

another great video Cory. i never thought to consider the rock wool on a potted plant a good colony of bacteria, but thats actually really true and a good insight. i know i have always kept live plants, even if it was just anacharis or java moss with some guppies or goldfish, and they always did great long before I knew what nitrification bacteria was. i was about 5 when i got my first tank and from looking back on how often I fed them, which was every time I walked by the tank, I am sure the plants were the sole reason anything survived. BTW, the first fish I had were named Smokey and the Bandit if that tells you how long ago that was. thanks again for the great work!

Hey Cory. So, unfortunate disaster happened, and all the fish in my ten gallon died. I had to break down the tank, and my four year old nerite snail (secretly the snail world's Wonder Woman) had to go live at a fish place called Aquarium Connection. Anyway. I'm planning on doing another tank in a few months. Still with my ten, freshwater, but this time I'm planning on a much better aquascape, filter, and heater. I'd love for it to be an amano shrimp tank. But I also love cherries. Can they coexist well? Will the Cherry shrimp multiply if they're sharing a tank with Amanos?

Misty Lau
Misty Lau - 8 years ago
Alright, thank you so much. And they will be well fed, I'll make sure of that!

Speaking of which, I've done loads of research, but you've had experience, like you said in the video. So is there a "best" or are there some good food supplements for them if they don't get enough algae and things from the tank itself? I tried two different kinds of algae wafers for my snail and shrimp at one point, but neither of the two types on animals even touched either types. Would they eat the wafers if they were hungry enough? Did they have enough food from the tank already? I just want to be prepared so the little guys have the best I can possibly give.
