DISCUS HANS INTERVIEW PART 2 ARE DISCUS HARD TO KEEP?

Lets talk about keeping Discus with Discus Hans. Over the years Discus have unfortunately developed a reputation for being difficult to keep. In this episode Hans and I discuss how Stendker Discus has changed the way we look at these beautiful and majestic fish. Discus Hans has quickly become one of the most respected figures in the aquarium/tropical fish industry. For the first time on YouTube you will meet Hans and hear him discuss where he's from and how he got started in the industry. Discus Hans is the exclusive importer of Stendker Discus from Germany. In the last decade Stendker has exploded in popularity as a Discus Breeder. Their Discus have developed a reputation for being the heartiest and easiest Discus to keep due to them being raised in standard tap water, an idea considered impossible just a few decades ago. All of Hans' fish are available on his website: www.discusfishstore.com His fish house is only open to the public by appointment . .http://www.kgtropicals.com www.facebook.com/kgtropicals @kgtropicals on Twitter kg_tropicals on instagram bubble sound effect recorded by Amanda. www.soundbible.com

This is why i dont understand why people say to go to 92f when discus are sick...  Higher temps only make bacteria and Virus grow faster and i mean wayyy faster...  If you have a bacterial problem you want to lower the temps of the tank
Dutch 4ever
Dutch 4ever - 6 years ago
I believe higher temps boost the immune system of the fish
rocky
rocky - 8 years ago
Kevin spacey it increases the metabolism and life cycle making it easier for medication to kill the infection
Wadac*nt
Wadac*nt - 8 years ago
true but when you add some kind of medicine you should put the temp a bit higher so it would work better

so my red discus is a small one he gets along well with my other fish as well as my 2 angel fish the only problem is the he will always be in one corner by himself and he wont swim is this a normal behavior for discus thanks
sagrath1982
sagrath1982 - 7 years ago
JR no, is not a normal behavior, discus are schooling fish they need to be in a group of at least 4, hope this helps

I am an amature fishkeeper with 4 tanks from 5 gall to 120 gallon. My fish seem to be doing well and am have a mated pair of angels that just had their first breeding. I would love to keep discus but like many people am a little afraid to try. The worry is that even though I can work with most of my water paramaters our water here is very hard. Would discus be able to thrive in this or would it be unfair to the fish to attempt to keep them?
sagrath1982
sagrath1982 - 7 years ago
Judith Peavler you should get your discus breaded from your place where you, if you order from some where else it's going to be harder to keep due the water conditions in y he water, I've hear some people breeded discus with tap water with no problem at all

how many water changes do i have to do if i get 2.5-3 inch discus? I've heard that the first week you do daily 40% changes then the second week you do every other day 35% changes and then go to your normal scedule. is this true? or can i start every other day the first week then go to once a week? this is the only thing i am confused on.
Wirty
Wirty - 9 years ago
+micah hinze well to be honest i do 1 a week on 3.5 inch and they are growing great. but that's because the ro is expensive where i live. i would recommend to a week
BirdBoyGippsland
BirdBoyGippsland - 10 years ago
if discus are easy to keep and they breed well in captivity why are they so expensive. is it just a case of demand driving up the price?
CrestFallenMoon
CrestFallenMoon - 9 years ago
+TheClosedpalm its because of their colors. Koi fish can be super expensive yet they are hardy/easy to care
Muneeb Rahman
Muneeb Rahman - 9 years ago
maybe because they are beautiful fish...people pay good money for a good looking fish.  Just like how male peacocks are a lot more expensive than females.

His ph is about 7.4 to 7.6. It is not true that you need a very low ph it should not be thrue the roof but this blood line of Diskuszucht stendker has adjusted to the ph levels. I have a 90 gallon discus tank and I got all of them from hans.

No disrespect to Hans but I got some discus from him that did very well and my live plants LOVE large water changes.  I've got a low tech 120 gallon tank which you can check out on my channel.  Ironically the discus that is used for my icon is the ONLY one I haven't purchased from Hans.  I don't see me buying from anybody else.  His fish are worth every penny.

I got a box of discus from Hans.  He always replied to my e-mails and treated me very well.  Great guy.  Funny thing is my Neons and Cardinals get ick when the lights flicker in the house.  Discus are a great fish.  Do weekly OR MORE water changes and you will be fine.  FYI  My water is on the acid side at the tap.  Thanks for doing these videos!

Great vid! I was wondering if its ok to keep Clown Loaches with Discus? I have raised Angels, but really don't want to be a breeder. Will the clowns bother the Discus? And, I work 12 hr shifts, would Discus manage ok on 2 x a day feedings? Thanks for all the great info & videos!

I've read the same thing about Discus, and that you should to place the tank accordingly. (e.g. Concrete floor is much preferred over a second story wood floor). Hans' Discus sure didn't seem to mind the overhead BWI jets though!

Breeders use 20 gallons for the pairs to spawn in but its not a good size for raising them in if that makes sense. Usually the breeders will raise the fry in much larger tanks then once they are grown they'll put a pair in a 20 gallon.

TDA (don't want to call you DrunkenAlcoholic lol) 10% + 10% + 10% + 10% is not a 40% water change. Water change all depends on how many Discus, what sizes and most important: how much food do you trow in the tank, most of the time the Discus doesn't make the tank dirty, it's the owner by trowing a lot of food in. If I do a water change, it's about 30-40% of the system, don't use buckets lol lol One of the next movies will show how. I do this about every other day.

Harry, it's more the surrounding your Discus are in, dark gravel and back ground can bring out "speckles" on your pigeon types. Blue Diamond is not a pigeon so will never show it. Stendker pigeons are known to be very clean.

I'll be uploading a video soon where he talks about that more and actually demonstrates how he does water changes in there. He doesn't do it by percentage, he does it as needed. He tests every day.
TheDrunkenAlcoholic
TheDrunkenAlcoholic - 11 years ago
He didn't say the amount of water changes, is it 30% each week like normal fish? or alot of discus forums talk about different amounts of water changes E.g 50% everyday some others say 30% every 2 days ect... for me personally I change the discus tank ever couple of days with 2 or so buckets which would probably give around 40% each week but in small amounts during the week(every other day)

For the first time Discus keeper I can't stress enough that you'll have your best luck with fish from Hans. I've kept Discus for years from just about everywhere and NONE of them compare to his.
