Olivier Bontemps
Olivier Bontemps - 6 years ago
Did he survive? The metroplex treatment worked? Cause ive lost 2 great discus like this. And 2more are affected. Dnt know if my heater is faulty for electricity in water

My discus had the same problem dashing around all of sudden. Fully agree with you that quarantine is of utmost importance. Also, having a UV sterilizer helps get rid of any harmful bacteria that may be present in the water.

what's the best way to cure this
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 7 years ago
+fish mad There is no cure. Sorry. It's a blood borne pathogen and once it gets to the brain, it throws off their senses.

I am having the same problem, can you tell me how you fixed it?
Ankush Nayak
Ankush Nayak - 7 years ago
I guess the problem is in my tank. will see how it turns out. thanks for your reply :)
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 7 years ago
+Ankush Nayak if it's crytobia or another blood borne pathogen, you have to burn your tank and equipment. I'm sorry to say that but it's necessary or the parasite just comes right back.
Ankush Nayak
Ankush Nayak - 7 years ago
thanks for replying steve.

in am trying PP for now the dashing seems to have stopped.

i had cichlid around 20 of them and they all died in a similar way rapid dashing then whirling. got them from a different source
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 7 years ago
+Ankush Nayak I couldn't fix it. They all died. My recommendation if they all die is to completely start over and never get anymore discus from wherever you got those ones from. Completely break down your tank and clean it all.

hi! i am building a 65 gallon planted discus tank and i am going to have 5 maybe 6 discus. i have an old 25 gallon tank that i am going to use as a quarantine tank. and my question is , shall i buy all together 5-6 discus quarantine them for about 2 months and put them in the main tank, or shall i buy2-3 the first time and after a while the rest? sorry for my english :P
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 8 years ago
I think 25 gallons is too small for that many discus. There isn't enough room for proper movement and they will be very aggressive with each other increasing stress levels which could cause them to get very sick except for the most dominant fish. I would get at least a 40 gallon tank and get 2 to 3 at a time. 6 would be a 55 minimum. I think you will have a lot if problems putting 2 or 3 discus in a 25 gallon tank.

Whats up Steve. Wow. I can imagine in the wild. Great footage. Darted out really fast. Awesome vid as always. I oral induce metro. I don't just put it in the water. I use pipettes. Metro really works!

They are really cheap. Home Depot sells them by the pack for a couple of bucks.
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 8 years ago
+The Inquisitive Fish Guy 71 Yup. That's how I've seen it done. I mix mine in frozen food and also put it in the water as I'm feeding them. I need to get a pipette for sure.

The recipe for the solution is 3 scoops of metro and 3 scoops of epson salt mixed in a half of cup of tank water. Always works for me. You can preserve the solution. That way you wont have to continue to mix up a batch each time.

I lay the fish down on a towel damp with tank water, and slide the pipette gently into the mouth of the fish pass the gills. Be sure not to have any air pockets inside of the pipette when you draw the solution up into the pipette.
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 8 years ago
+The Inquisitive Fish Guy 71 Do you put the pipette in front of the fish or hold the fish on a towel,
IFG
IFG - 8 years ago
Yes sir. Good topic and great product.
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 8 years ago
Yeah, I mix it in with the food but also add it directly to the water column. The problem with theses guys is they're really not eating the frozen beefheart like the bigger ones do. Tough to administer but it'll still be injested if it's in the water.

It's obvious the fish was doing its workout and you came out of nowhere and started recording said fish and made him shy. Thus he had to go into Hiding as you made the poor Discus feel insecure! Lol

Great advice. Never quarantined before even though I know I should. I want to add some cardinals and rummy nose into my main tank If I get some ill put them in one of my other tanks for a month first. Where did you buy those discus?

Shipping is definitely a concern. These fish are expensive enough with out shipping. I had some shipped the first time then I found a breeder about 90 minutes away. Was worth the drive for me.
Keep the videos coming! I always enjoy them.
Scuba Steve
Scuba Steve - 8 years ago
+T Holz Yeah it would but I can get quality discus from my LFS without paying an arm and a leg for shipping. It wouldn't matter if they came from him or not, I'd still quarantine anyway to get them used to my bacteria in my water. That's another video though my friend!

Wouldn't a breeder like Hans be a better place to buy from? Might have a better chance at getting healthy fish.
