I have an Eheim battery powered vacuum called the Quick Vac Pro that we use. I've been using it for two and it works great. Once in a while it does clog with sand but it is easy to clean out.

OK... Kevin,I found the video about your automatic draining/filling system. Very cool. I could do that. Question for ya: When I vacuum my tank, I pull out a lot of solid waste...if you're just changing water like that, you're leaving in the waste. Does your filter system handle all that? If so, what do you use?

I use our local water which is from a well and very hard. Discus do not need special water unless you are breeding them. I let it sit for two days before adding it to the tank.

What kind of water do you use? Do you use something like discus water to lower PH? How many days do you store the water? How exactly do you treat the water?

Still every week. I have similar filtration and if you don't change the water weekly the fish will most likely get sick. I got lazy a few months ago and lost a fish because of it.

One or two times a week. The 'hardcore' guys on the forums often do daily but I don't see the point. The only time I do more is if a fish is sick (rare).

Oh ok . I have the air pump with the bubble wand in the tank . Do you think I should put the power head in there ? I've been getting a lot of hair algae on drift wood . How do you manage the algae ?

I have two Hydor powerheads that circulate water along the sand. I also have a 525 gph canister filter along with an Aquaclear 110 HOB filter. I rarely see anything on the sand. I stir the sand two times a week just to be sure nothing compacts and to be sure the corners of the tank are clean.

What about the waster on the sand ? Because when you drain the water , it only suck up the water at one spot.
