This video has so much memory on me. I remember the first time I watched this video few years back together with my lovely girlfriend. I felt in love with the setting, the landscape, lighting, and the music. This is where and the beginning how I get so crazy to set up my tank just like this. But until today I never get the chance to have discus on my tank. It just so expensive and I cant afford to see them dying on my tank. But nonetheless I began to understood of which type of fish should be in together and what the community its all about. Anyway I love watching this video again and again. Btw me and my girlfriend are no longer together but when I look at this video its just so beautiful and it makes me happy again.

I assume You defrost the beef heart mixture before feeding? I am no "doctor" or expert at all, and not the one to give anyone with such healthy fish like yours any advice. I just search my informations from the factory where my own Discus were born and raised. I got a breeding couple (Marlboro red) with egg's about every 10 days, so amusing to watch but no babies yet, because I dont separate them from the rest of the crowd and dont bother to do. Thx for posting your video, great pleasure to watch :-)  http://diskuszucht-stendker.de/en/home

a large number of plants keeps competition for the algae, turning your tank light off at night will slow growth, and bottomfeeders such as pleco fish and apple snails will consume the algae

I've been on the fence about trying discus, but you've inspired me to give it a try!  Discus names are so confusing - do I see a blue diamond in there, and a marlboro red?  What is the blue one with the vertical stripes?  And the one coming late to the party at about 0:35 on the video - is that some kind of pigeon blood?  Thanks for your help, and your advice in your previous comments.  Thanks also for the great music - I'd never heard of Susana Baca before.  Must have more!

that depends on what sort of fish you have. Some species would be happier in a deeper tank, and others would be happier in a longer, more shallow tank. But 99% of the time, bigger is better when it comes to aquariums

Thanks for the reply..i have one last doubt as i plan to have a setup like this soon. You said you bought the tetras at a fairly large size compared to the discus,so that the discus would not think of eating them. Can you tell me what size would that be.Say for a 10-12 inch Discus what size cardinals would be the perfect size so that they don't fit in their mouths and we have a good looking and compatible tank?:)

Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 11 years ago
Hello friend. You need to do a little research on the internet concerning discus. Discus need 10-15 gallons each, and generally don't like tanks smaller than 60 gallons...also they need pretty clean water, witch means big filters and frequent water change. If you must keep you 10 gallon tank, I would recommned Dwarf Corydoras, Neons, Cardinals, and Glowlights, amano and cherry shrimp and other cool little fish...
Norman of Latria

:)
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 11 years ago
Also, keep in mind that in the beginning everything will take you longer to do, if you are not experienced and used to doing it..like everything else. It will will get much easier and faster as time goes by. My advice is: if you are interested in aquariums, give it a try...start of with a smaller tank, but with an external filter, and you will pretty much get an idea of what its maintenance comprises of. I really don't think the workload of a large tank is that much heavier than a smaller one:)
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 11 years ago
Hello, and thank you! It all depends on what you consider ''work'' or ''trouble'', and of course experience...the work I put into maintaining this aquarium consists of feeding everyday, and water change once a week that takes about an hour to do. This is the main workload. After this I clean the filters every 3 months, which is kinda a hassle, and also takes me at least an hour...and every few weeks I trim the plants. The thing is that half of what I described doesn't seem like ''work'' to me:)

Hey its me again. I really want a tropical style tank. I used to have my own aquarium. I still have a 10 gallon tank and im pretty sure i still have most of the things needed.(Filter, heater etc) The fish im most interested in are the disus (and maybe some cardinal/neon tetras) Am i going to need salt water? Is 10 gallons enough for 4 discus and a few neon/cardinal tetra? What is all the specific equipment i will need? Do I NEED plants or is it optional? What other cool looking fish can i get?

Norman of Latria - 11 years ago
Hello and thank you for the great comment! I have never had a problem with the small tetras, but I always bought them at a pretty large size..never baby tetras. Also I keep the discus well fed all day...and the tetras have lots of hiding places. Some cardinals are in the tank from the very beggining...

This could be many many things. Could be aggression from other fish, could be illness, infection, something in the water etc. If all the fish are doing this, it is probably something wrong with the water. If only one or two have this problem, then its probably some illness or aggression. All I can say without seeing the fish is keep up the clean water changes and keep the water parameters stable. Then check for signs of illness...

My friend, amazingly you are the first person to comment on this feeding technique! Actually I usually don't use this technique, except when I have a shy discus that doesn't eat very well, or when I feed beefheart. Generally I thaw the frozen food (bloodworms, krill, artemia) in some aquarium water and throw some dry food in the mix (all in a cup). Then I feed small portions of this throughout the day. However this technique is great from problem eaters, and you can do it with your hand also

They are extremely peaceful with other fish. You should worry about other fish stressing them out. It is generally not a good idea to have tank mates of their own size, but with lots of space you probably could do it. Not recommended however.

From what I understand they are quite similar to the Scalari angelfish, and they will eat small fish such as tetras if they get the opportunity and are hungry enough. I don't think they can live mainly on plant life, although they do nimble now and then on the leaves...
Glenn Buchanan
Glenn Buchanan - 11 years ago
Are these fish "predortary" or opportunistic invertibre eaters that otherwise rely MAINLY on plant life? They DO look like rounded out angel fish, (stands to reason sincethey both types of cichlids) but i KNOW angel fish are ambush predators, picking off smaller fish....
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 11 years ago

Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 11 years ago
Thats a whole bedate in its self. It is proven that discus fish grow much better with lots of protein, and beefheart has a great concentration. However, I do get your point however, and I don't feed that much beefheart ( I also feed bloodworms, artemia shrimp, krill shirmp, mysis shirmp, etc..). Usually twice a week if I have young fish, and not at all when they are fully grown.
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 11 years ago
Thank you mate! The general rule is that if a fish can fit another one in its mouth, it will eat it, but if you keep your fish well fed and they are not aggressive by nature, they will be ok. All I can say to help you with your fish keeping is keep it up, and remember that fish love water changes and clean water. Good luck!

Hi, and thank you. The light fixture came with the aquarium ( anubias) . it is a total of 252 watts, half white lamps ( 6,700Kelvin) and half red lamps (3,000Kelvin). I think the secret to a clean tank in most aspects is frequent water changes and siphining...thats not to say that I don't scrape a little algae of the glass and driftwood every now and then :). Of course you have to have well balanced light intensity and duration so you won't have extreme algae growth.

This is a question with many many possible answers. Firstly discus fish in general are fussy eaters, at many times they can take weeks to adjust to new environments, new type of food etc etc. However, it is not natural that your discus (all of them?) hide continuously. If this continues, you should look into it..it could be your water quality, your water parameters (hardness, temp etc), other fish(?), sickness or stress from something else....

The most exquisite aquarium I've ever seen .... perfection. The fish are gorgeous of course, but the details of their "home" are breathtaking. The placement of the plants and driftwood ... even the blend of different species of fish and variant colors of the discus. I am in awe. I've just mentally outlined the dimensions of a 150 gallon tank and estimated expenses .. and realized I'll need two other jobs and have to sleep under the aquarium. But I'm considering it.

Hi guys. first of all I have experimented with a few plants, and not all do well in my tank, especially the short ones ( can't get enough light because of my tall tank and relative low lighting). So I choose the plants that I think will like the conditions in my tank. I use seachem flourish fert tablets under the roots, and my lights are 252 watts combined. Half red lamps 3000kelvin and half white lamps 6700kelvin. I also had success with my older white lamps of 10000kelvins. Good luck!

Hello. Yes I use 2 filters for clean water (and having a 2nd filter is always a good idea in case the other malfunctions). First of all, I have tried out many different plants ( and still do), and I choose the ones that like my water and light conditions best. I use fert tablets under the roots, and my lights are 252 wats combined. Half Red lamps 3000Kelvin and Half White lamps 6700Kelvin. I also had success with my old white lamps of 10,000kelvins, and they actually had better water penetration

Thank you. Everyone has this fear before they start keeping discus...they are not ''hard'' to keep, but they do require a bit more attention than your average aquarium fish. They don't need any different type of care, but they do need consistency. By this I mean that you may get way with forgeting a WC or 2 with a guppy tank, but discus may not be so forgiving. If you are dedicated and consistent, you will be fine :)

Yes beefheart helps the fish grow faster and bigger, but it also makes the water quite dirty, so you will have to perform lots of water chages and have excellent filtration in your tank. Also, it is good for the discus to have a variety in their menu, so don't feed beef heart only. Mix it up with artemia shrimp, bloodworms and dry food. Personally, I only feed beefheart when the discus are still growing and you can prepare it your self, of buy ready made beefheart mixtures.
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 11 years ago

Hi, the truth is that a planted tank is always harder to clean than any other kind. Obviously, whatever you do, you can never clean it 100%. However, if you are committed to (at least) weekly water changes and thorough siphoning of the substrate, you will be fine. I do weekly water changes of 30%, siphon and use two large filters and keep the water quality pristine. No problems whatsoever. good luck with your set up!

Right. Fine sand becomes compacted too easily. However, my tank has quite a few Corydoras and their constant grubbing of the substrate helps somewhat. I've never had to fertilize my plants because my tank is heavily stocked. I have a refugium that helps with the excess waste that the plants in the display tank can't take up quickly.

I heard the same thing from some people when I first thought about introducing clown loaches to the discus tank, but others said it was fine. A general rule of thumb is that a fish will try to eat any other fish that will fit in its mouth. Other than that, there are some fish that share water parameter preferences and do fine with discus. Ideal discus tankmates are Corydoras sterbai for example. Fully grown Cardinal Tetras also are good tankmates. I have found that clown loaches are also great, although some say that the clown loaches disturb their discus ( I have never had that problem). Its up to you :)

Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 12 years ago
:) Ha, I am far from rich my friend...If you save up its not hard to buy a large aquarium, and the discus are pretty cheap if get them at a young age. The difficult part is the consistent and systematic maintenance.
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 12 years ago
Thank you for the awesome comment! To tell you the truth, your tank isn't ideal for discus. Discus feel better in large numbers and with your size tank you can't have more than 2. On the other hand, your tank would be great for a single breeding pair. Keep in mind that breeding discus is even more work than just keeping them and usually takes some experience. Also it is not always easy to find a pair that will breed. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Your discus tank is absolutely STUNNING! (Excellent quality video too). I am a relatively new aquarium hobbyist and have just recently been given a tall 37 gallon tank. I was so hoping that I could have some discus but I am concerned that my tank is not large enough. I have researched and read that the cardinal tetras you have are beneficial in helping the Discus feel safe and happy - can you tell me if my tank is too small and if not, how many could I have (I'd like to have a breeding pair)..

Norman of Latria - 12 years ago
If you mean Ramirezi then yes they like high temp, if you mean Bolivian Ram, then they might not like the high temp although I used to have a couple with my discus and they were ok..it might shorten their lifespan a bit...mine died in less than 2 years. I like the tetras with discus because they give movement to the tank, but its all subjective :) If you haven't gotten the discus yet, choose them carefully based on size, shape, pattern intensity and most of all appetite! good luck!
scarhbar23
scarhbar23 - 12 years ago
Well so far the Rams have colored up a LOT with the higher temps, and teh Pygmy Cories are a little more active than normal. I think I am going to skip out on the Rummynose actually. They are a little too jittery for my liking. Can't wait to get my tank like this though!
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 12 years ago
Hi and thank you for the awesome comment. Your combination seems fine, provided that you have a good filter and do regular WC's.The only issue that you might have is that the Rams, and the pygmy cories might not love the high water temperature that the discus require so you will probably wanna keep it around 28 degrees celcious ( sterbai cories like high temp). Also I would suggest at least 10 rummynose tetras so that they make a strong school, and don't hide so much. Good luck with your setup!
scarhbar23
scarhbar23 - 12 years ago
Hey there! I think this has to be my favorite discus video on youtube! I have a 75 gallon, I plan on keeping these fish together: 6 Discus, 2 Rams, 6 Pygmy Cories, colony of shrimp, and MAYBE 6 Rummynose tetras. How do those sound together?
Norman of Latria

Cooking gelatine...its used to keep the mixture firm so it won't dissolve when you throw it in the water. Google : ''cooking gelatine beefheart discus'' and you will find many recipes that explain how it is used. :)

gelatine?? whats that pls tell me when i search it on google it shows some jelly stuff!!
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 12 years ago
Well these fish feel good in groups, so I wouldn't suggest less than 4..minimum 3. They also need a large aquarium cos they get quite big over the years.
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 12 years ago
yes, don't leave the meat out of the freezer for more than 12 hours or so. Also if you are serious about making home made fish-food, i would suggest that you use a recipe with gelatine so that the meat doesn't dissolve quickly in the water. There are some good recipes out there with meat, veggies, vitamins and gelatine. Good luck

@amich21 Some people do daily water changes, others can't even bring themselves to do once a week. I do a 30% WC and sand siphon every Friday, and the discus are fine (I also have 2 huge filters) It takes me about an hour from start to finish including everything (cleaning the glass, rising off buckets, equipment etc etc). Generally I like taking care of my tank, so it doesn't seem like work, but sometimes I just have to push myself when I'm bored or tired. Its up to you:)
Norman of Latria
Norman of Latria - 12 years ago
@diezeled Well, if you want to have lots of plants or difficult plants, I would definitely suggest some sort of fertilizer substrate. If however you intend to have easy/hardy plants such as anubias or swords, then fertilizer tablets in your sand will probably do just fine.
