After watching that again, the only thing that come to me of the top of my mind is, perhaps it may be due to the First Ray Being Small, he just picked up that net first, then swapped it for the larger net to because the other rays are bigger.

Anyway sorry, I never understood your question right away.

Ultimate Fishkeeping Show Actually, I was referring to the change of nets he used while handling the 'rays. If you notice, he uses a finer mesh one at first, then switched to the large hole model.
Ultimate Fishkeeping Show
Ultimate Fishkeeping Show - 6 years ago
The first net Joey used was for lifting out the Sting Rays, has large holes so the substrate falls through to avoid irritating the rays during transferring them from one tank to the other.

The Other net was for the fish, but being large ski-dish fish one net was used to hold them in to prevent them from shooting out of the net and crashing to the floor which they could potently injure themselves badly.
pancudowny
pancudowny - 6 years ago
One question: Why did you use two different nets?

WOW!! This tank looks SOOO much BETTER!! I mean it's now an amazing tank! Let's face it, the old aquascape just wasn't doing this awesome tank any justice! I hate to say this but it was downright ugly. All the work put into building this tank and then it seemed like the decor was half-assed and pitiful looking. Well my man, you have certainly proved why you are the King of DIY once again with this beautiful tank finally receiving the gorgeous aquascaping that it deserved! The tank looks much bigger now and is stunning, very beautiful roots and background! I would add a lily of some sort and let them flower on the surface and let the leaves grow to the surface too ofcourse. You might be able to plant it into a pot and hide the pot between the roots so it´s out of sight. It will give a much more natural look then just some anubias and java ferns (which also hides the root structure). And it doesn´t take up a lot of swimming space for the arowanas.

Some Floating plants maybe and some smaller maybe schooling fish and shrimps as a kind of background animal and lots of mosses, ferns and plants between the roots and maybe a fey round stones as an optical break from the plain sand, giving it a bit more structure

So out of curiosity, how do you manage to clean the substrate under all the decor? I've had issues in the past with waste and left over food collecting in hard to reach places. I know obviously not to feed more than they eat in a few minutes, but these tanks have had bottom feeders as well.
cocopunk1486
cocopunk1486 - 6 years ago
Jessica Giraldo my guess is that since the rats are constantly turning the substrate over they’ll probably turn over the substrate that’s underneath the decor and move it towards the front. Just a guess I’m no fish expert, maybe there is an actual method to cleaning. Take a giant brush and pull the substrate forward

Really nice fish and tank!

Can somebody help me: I have a 135 freshwater tank and im looking forwards to change my filtration. I´ve heard good comment about the simless sumps of custom aquariums, can somebody tell me there opinion and if they know any other sumps that could also work great? Thanks.

Joey, that looks AWESOME!!!!!!! I was also thinking about the room the rays would have, but, thought I'd wait till they were back in the tank, and, they're gonna be fine for a few years until they get some size. One thing though that the tank needs, PLANTS! Big plants. Errrrrrrrrrr, I wonder how my landlord would feel about me turning our basement apartment into a, hmmmmmmm, probably 10-15,000 gallon tank. Ya know what they say, GO BIG OR STAY HOME! WHY NOT JUST MAKE HOME A BIG TANK, AND SLEEP WITH THE FISHES!

Can you make a video explaining how do you move the rays? any precautions regarding water quality, and other factors if there are any. I mean how do you prepare
Kian Hein
Kian Hein - 6 years ago
In the last couple videos Joey has explained that since the room is temperature controlled, all the tanks are roughly the same temperature meaning he doesn't have to worry about it. He has also explained in many of his tank maintenance videos that he uses the same well water for all the tanks, as well as good cycled media meaning that conditions are very similar in all of his tanks.

It would be interesting if he made a video about how to transfer the rays as well as other large fish when the tanks are not balanced like these ones.

Well, it kinda has to be bland so the arowanas don’t do the same thing his old arowana did and hurt it’s back, causing it to die. And plus he can’t put much decor on the ground because the rays need space to move around and such.

Looks really great. I thought you were going to add plants to this tank? Any way, I think it looks great with or without plants. Those back grounds are truly amazing! Glad to see the little pearl seems to be doing okay with the others. I must admit I was a little worried about her. Maybe those other rays saw the video where she put that "bully" rainbow fish in its place.

I feel so grateful for your updates and detailed information on what you do, how you do it, and why you do it. Your passion is unmatched by far to most of the fish keepers I have seen. Surya Sankar Sen
Surya Sankar Sen - 6 years ago
Again, I'm a fan of the channel. Don't turn this discussion into a 'we love joey' tirade. I simply stated my opinion. And there are plenty of fishkeepers out there who are capable of doing better. Its simply a matter of preference of what school of fishkeeping you're more drawn to. Personally, i don't prefer the way he's housing them. This is no way discredits his knowledge as a fishkeeper. Please understand that.

"Feeling bad for the Ray's" is a very strong statement. I don't think many can provide these Ray's with a better quality of life then what Joey provides.
Surya Sankar Sen
Surya Sankar Sen - 6 years ago
Rays usually don't free swim like ither fish. Sometimes yes, they'll go up the tank walls, but generally not. So i still stand by what i said. So lets just agree to disagree here. Cheers!
Saundis
Saundis - 6 years ago
Surya Sankar Sen yes i realize this, but it is roughly the same size if you account for the top of the roots as swimming or floor size for the rays.
Surya Sankar Sen
Surya Sankar Sen - 6 years ago
No need to get hostile with your responses. I'm stating my opinion in a public forum. Yes, to answer your question. And to respond, you do realize that the background decor still it blocks out a good portion of the tank, right?
Saundis
Saundis - 6 years ago
You do realize the can swin under and over the roots, right? They arent suction cupped to the ground.
Surya Sankar Sen
Surya Sankar Sen - 6 years ago
Tank footprint is considerably reduced because of the protruding roots. Unlike before when the rays had a lot of swim space they look cluttered in this new setup. The back is left completely unaccessible. I'm a doubter, but i guess we have to consider that they need time settling in. Let's see. And the rays are going to get much bigger than what they are now.

Yea i agree I am not convinced the old wood took up more space. He is justifying it and that comment seemed weak tbh. We all do that when we have something new and think its better than the old. The old scape had space to swim behind and through it too. Its like having ur bed in the middle of your room and running around it, much harder to run around it when its in a corner.
Tony S
Tony S - 6 years ago
I sort of agree. While the old background took up more space in general I think (but could be wrong) that it took up less floor space. The new background is amazing but does seem to take up more floor space, but less space in the whole tank overall. But I still think it's enough space for the rays regardless.
