Hi Brian, I notice this video is a few years old now but I just set up a 150 gallon low-tech aquarium and was going to buy two Finnex LED's but still cant decided which ones would work the best with the depth of a 150 gallon. Do you having an recommendations for me?

Not sure on low tech. I had a high tech 150 gal and I used 4 Finnex Ray2's. Maybe try the fugeRay, they are lower light.

You mention using the Ray2 to achieve the proper plant growth you need and the MonsterRay to enhance the colors of your Discus.  What made you choose to use the Ray2 instead of the FugeRay Planted+?  Your video review of the Planted+ seemed very favorable.  I am going to be upgrading from a standard flourescent light to LED for my new live planted tank 25 gallon.  My inclination has been for the Planted+ but you have me curious about the Ray2 instead.

+Jonathan J. Reinhart No problem.  Glad it worked out for you!  The Monster Ray brings out the red in my cardinals for sure

Thanks Brian.  Finally installed my 24in FugeRay Planted+ and am loving it.  Think I may save up for a MonsterRay to put on my tank.  It should bring out the reds in my Cardinal Tetras and also the colors in the Apistogramma cacatuoides I plan to add.  Thanks again for your reply.

I choose the Ray2 as it is a more powerful light and has a higher PAR rating.  I wanted to get the highest light possible with this tank.  Thanks for watching!

Great review, will one ray 2 be enough for a standard 55 gallon tank, with co2, high light plants? I'm currently using 4.5 watts per gallon power compacts, thanks.

Hey Brian, I need a second opinion in deciding since you have experience with the planted + and ray 2. I am dead set on 2 monsterrays for my discus but would 2 ray2s or 2 planted plus be better for a height of 22"? I was afraid the monsterrays + the FRP+ would turn the hue very red but the red led is supposedly good for plants. Then I hear the Ray2 would cause an algae bloom w/out co2 injection but has a higher output? I'd also appreciate feedback from anyone who has either of the two combinations

Its a 135G tank measuring 72''x20''x24 ~(21"light to substrate). I was afraid it would have been too much light especially since i was also planning on 4 36" fixtures so I went ahead with 2 of the planted+ and monsterrays. I read the par was low but im hoping the 4 lights will be enough. I will most likely try to post my tank progression for other low-med light enthusiasts. Hopefully it will become as lush as your tank.
Brian's Fish Tanks
Brian's Fish Tanks - 10 years ago
So what size is your tank?  I think Ray2's would be too much light if you are not injecting Co2, but it's hard to tell without knowing the total dimensions of your tank and the whole picture.

Oops...didn't mean to hit post...was at work. :-) Brian-This will be my first Discus, so I'll probably stick with low light, easy plants to start...at least until I get the discus under control. I live about 40 minutes from Kenny so that's where I'll be getting my 5 discus. After I feel comfortable with how the Discus are doing, I'll probably do some higher light plants. Looks like I'm going to try the ray2's and the monster ray. Thanks again for your help. :-)

Beautiful discus tank! How deep is that tank? Why did you go for the Ray2ds vs the planted+? I'm setting up a discus tank...70 gallon, which is 24" high and trying to figure out which finnex. I definitely want the monster ray, but confused on what to pair it with. The tank will be planted, low tech, for now, might do medium light plants later, and no co2. What would your recommendation be? Thanks
Brian's Fish Tanks
Brian's Fish Tanks - 10 years ago
Thanks for watching!  I went with the Ray2 over the planted+ because they have a higher PAR reading.  For a taller tank, it was important to me to have high intensity lighting.  It really depends on they type of plants you plan to grow though.  Mine are all high light plants.

Love it, live it! Best bang for your buck. I have thought about getting a monster ray. I have a space in between my Ray 2s where I could drill one onto the hanging kit! Looks great man. Your blyxa is a giant bush. You must be doing something right.

Wow that is a big difference.  That is some awesome pearling for so early in the day.  I would love to add a second 48" Monster Ray to my 120.  Maybe if I ask Santa....  Maybe Lowe can recommend which combo would work best for African tanks.
