HOW TO: Set up a Fish Tank Sump Part 2

In this video I will show you how to set up a fish tank sump. Part 2: Fish tank sumps are the best filter system for your tank as they can be customised and hide your heaters, pumps, air stones and other aquarium items out of sight. This will also help keep your tank looking clean, clear and help show off your beautiful fish. In this video you will learn how to set up a fish tank sump, what filter media to use and the best order to set up your sump. I have used different types of filter media including sponge foam, alfagrog and K1. They all have different filtration properties to help maintain the best possible water quality for your fish tank. Sponge Foam This helps to remove food, fish waste, plant leaves and other particles that you can see from your fish tank. Alfagrog Then we use this highly porous media. It's high surface area makes it the natural choice for colonisation by micro organisms in biological filtration systems resulting in cleaner water. K1 media Finally we have out moving bed filter which uses an air stone to pump the K1 filter media round as this process helps breed strong bacteria colonies to ensure the highest possible biological filtration. Let me know you have any question on how to Set up a Fish Tank Sump Hopefully this video gave you some ideas for your own setup. If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up. Travel Martinez 150g tank, I change the sock out once a week and throw it in the washing machine.

I tried a filter sock, but as it's so fine it kept getting blocked. Using the foam works best for my sump set up as it is great for both mechanical and biological filtration.
What size is your tank and sump, do you have a video?

Travel Martinez I'm down to a 150g and a saulosi breeding colony, have you tried a filter sock as apposed to all that foam?

Thanks for your message.
I found it easy to maintain as its low maintenance. I simply do watch changes each week and that keeps everything in check.
What size tank and fish do you keep?

hi m8, your K1 is just bobbing up and down, lots stuck in their corners doing nothing. put your air stones near the baffle, this will cause a tumble effect. check out DIY FISH KEEPER JOEY.

I think your first setup was much better personally and i would layer all of the course, medium and fine pads together to stop your first set of medium and fine getting clogged up. i would put the k1 in the drain chamber so that sediment will make it's way to the bottom and the drain flow will provide your movement for the media. i would also stick to two heaters in case one malfunctions. that's just what i would do though

+adam murray I found two heater were more of a problem during the summer months when the temperature would naturally reach 28 degrees, then the heaters would over heat and make the water hotter.
Just my personal experience, i would stick to one.

Hey cool setup for your heaters look into a true temp controller I have had one for about 2 years it works well very happy I pay about 70 US on Amazon well worth it

+Floyd Morey The tank holds it temperature just fine, I'm actually running just one heater now, as it seems easier to control the temperature that way.

Don't restrict the flow on your return pump, it could shorten the life of it.
Better to tee off your return and divert some of the flow back to your k1 chamber

I actually placed a tap-like value just above the return pump, as this was where the issue was coming from.

Ehiem as very reliable pumps and I dissemble and clean the pump each month to help with any issues this might cause.

Thanks for your comment.
