Rich, don't know if this would help you with discus breeding but here goes..Recently I started doing wcs with colder water to simulate amazon rain. In a few weeks I formed three discus pairs having today my first batch of eggs with the checkerboard pair. Unfortunately I don't have the tanks or space to separate the others but the good news is that the eggs weren't eaten. I'm doing 50% wcs every other day with 77 farenheit water keeping the same ph as tank .

nice. Yeah cold water changes is an old breeder's trick that has proved useful. What temp do you keep the tank at and how much colder do you make it after a WC?

One of the primary reasons I enjoy your channel is:

If you treated the fish so many times its very much possible the medicines damaged his organs and/or gills etc, if he/she's suffering it probably time release him/her from it? as sad as that is :(
Beek- Art.com
Beek- Art.com - 7 years ago
Exposing a fish to chemicals medicine for a long period of time can damage the organs of the fish.. there is nothing stupid about that, that's just how that works. And if the fish is suffering it is your responsibility as the fishkeeper to cull the fish. In nature it would've gotten eaten by now. But thank you for your nice constructive comment, you clearly know what you are talking about.

Most Apistogramma can do fine in low 70sF temperature. In fact, you will get more females from the offspring breeding at lower temp. High temperature skews the sex ratio to male.
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
interesting!
Hannibal Lecter
Hannibal Lecter - 7 years ago
Actually, I used to keep alot of different species of Apisto., such as agassizii, cacatuoides, trifaciata, bitaeniata, erythrura, macmasteri, hongsloi, barlowi, iniridae...the list goes on, including some of the most expensive ones like elizabethae and diplotaenia. Aside from the elizabethae, diplotaenia, and a few others the rest will breed at lower 70s without issue. In fact, I would breed a group of cacatuoides at lower temp to get mostly females and then breed the same group at higher temp to get mostly males since most people buy them in pairs. The would continue to breed like that for over 3 years.
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
I've heard that temps can dictate male to female ratios when breeding. But I wouldnt suggest keeping apistos at low temps like that long term.

If you didn't get send cacatuoides correctly, I would question if they mixed up your shipment all together. A cacatuoides are easily identified from trifasciata. You should get Mergus Cichlid Atlas 1 and 2 by Dr. Uwe Romer which details most of the known Apistogramma species. Beyond that, Aqualog Extra on Apistogramma by Dieter Bork and DATZ "South American Dwarf Cichlids" (the A # book) are the 2 picture id books that most Apisto enthusiasts used as references. There is one more which is Koslowski's book "Die Buntbarsche Amerikas: Band 2", but not sure it has been translated to English yet.
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
Im not so sure on the trifasciata either....I purchased a group of trifasciata at the same time that I purchased these "cacataudies" and they dont appear all too similar (assuming the trifasciata were sent correctly)
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
I dont think its an agassizi for sure eitehr.
Hannibal Lecter
Hannibal Lecter - 7 years ago
All A. agassizii have spades tail. That is an A. trifasciata male. Notice the diagonal line on the belly, that is the trademark of trifasciata. Without that diagonal line then it is Apisto. erythrura.

I have a question, I have recently torn down my 50L reef and have gone back to freshwater breeding, wondering what wouod be best to maybe make a bit of money as well, stuck between angelfish, GB rams, apistos, maybe discus? Any suggestions of what may be best?
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
sounds cool. Thats all in liters? If so I really dont think any of that will suit you to breed what you've listed unfortunately. As far as whats best thats all personal preference! Best for looks? best for your enjoyment? best for what might sell in your area?
OneGuyAndHisFish
OneGuyAndHisFish - 7 years ago
Rich's Fishes forgot to mention 50L is my display but primary breeding tank, i have 2 20L tanks, a 120L grow out and 2 40L tubs
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
The answer is a bit m ore detailed than the question I'm afraid. If all you have is a single 50L tank I'd suggest you dont look at breeding any of those as to do it right requires quite a few more tanks!

try kusuri for parasites on the discus that's exactly how my discus was acting till I added that
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
I've never even heard of that one. I'll have to check it out. But the fish has not showed any signs of actually having a parasite; and has had multiple parasitic treatments already.

I use a Thermo-pen, a kitchen tool for taking the temperature of meat (for example), as a double check of my aquarium thermometers. It's quick and surprisingly accurate. Oh, and get a haircut, ya hippie. ;-)

you have told this before but I missed it, what size tank is the discuss tank? How many could go in a 55?
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
Well I have quite a few different tanks with discus in them so not sure which you're asking about. You could easily keep 6 full sized discus in a 55 gallon tank.

Oh man I know how kitchen renovations are, we actually just finished ours not too long ago. We actually ended up moving our kitchen from one wall to another, so not much time for anything! Now I'm able to focus on the fishes and start up my (hopefully) soon to be fish room. I am always watching your videos and take a lot of advice from you...we are like, the same person heh. Nice vid Rich, hope that apisto pulls through.
I did see you have an aquatopia heater in the tank that you are putting the apisto in (the tank that houses the other apisto) which I just bought for a small tank, so just want to know your experience with that heater(s) thus far? (i.e. if it has failed your or not yet :) )
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
I'm not sure what brand that one is.; but aquatopia doesnt ring a bell. Its possible they rebrand them under different names sometimes. I've never had a heater fail on me other than a marineland honestly so I'd say its worked well enough so far!

Hey Rick Nice fish, love the fish room. I have a 40 gallon with 5 discus. I'm having issues with one discus bullying all the others. What would you recommend to solve this and I have the same Marineland heater and it failed the same way.

Rich's Fishes just some anubis and java fern. I may slip the discus into another take and add angels.
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 7 years ago
i've had a few of those marinelands fail. Well aggression in discus and other cichlids is not too surprising. Typically a larger group of fish can help (but 5 full grown discus might be tapping out the limits of a 40 gallon tank). Sometimes certain fish are just bullies and theres not much you can do. Do you have any plants or decor in the tank? Things to break up the lines of sight can help too; and allow the fish getting picked on to run and hide.
