Something I personally NEVER do is put tap water straight in, even though you used declorinator, it will take some time to mix and gas off.. I premix my water in a large 250l drum.
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 7 years ago
That's always a good idea. I don't have the accommodations to premix, but you're absolutely right. I now use Seachem Safe, which is a concentrated powder, and it's working great so far.

you need to buy a tripod.

+Andy Hernandez not exactly, I have 2 diy filters to the left of the tank. Check my latest vid, it shows all.

ok. You only use the HOB for filtration?

+Andy Hernandez I have a tripod, just didn't use it in that video. I use it when I'm in front the camera.

How do you do water changes do you use ro water or tap water and if you use tapwater how do you get your water to be softer?
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 7 years ago
+NOVAWOLF hey man, sorry for the delayed response. I use tap water, and I dechlorinate as the water is filling back up. I don't soften the water because these fish were born and raised in tap water conditions. However, I do have a huge piece of drift wood in the tank which softens the water and I also add West Indian Almond leaves. Those two items soften my water up for the discus very well.

Maurice Aquariums i tested my water and i have to make ro 4 to 1l tap to get hg kh about 4 and 6. and then i got ph 7.7. I will try to buy those leaves in my country. thx for info. Now i have to find Polish name for those leaves xd
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 8 years ago
+rafal kowalski I'm very sure it will. I use 2 large leaves for my 150. As for the amount of tap water I use... I do 80% water change every 2 days.

Maurice Aquariums thx for info. my tap water is 7.7. Those Indian almond leaves will help me lower it to 7? what tap ph do you have? and how much to use?
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 8 years ago
+rafal kowalski hello mate my pH is usually 6.5-7 I use west Indian almond leaves to soften it up, you can see them in my hob filter when I'm cleaning it out. I fill directly from the sink and add dechlorinate straight to the water. Nothing is prepped, but it's super important to ensure that the temperature of the water in the tap matches the tank water. If it's different it can cause temper shock and kill your fish if extreme. I hope I helped you my friend.

Thanks PB, girl things got real and you hit the nail on the head. My wife doesn't fancy the maintenance process too much. She "suggested" I get something that doesn't require as much maintenance. So as of Yesterday, all my discus went on sale. Someone is coming Saturday to view them. Thanks for watching , I've got some exciting stuff coming. How are you though? I heard horrible news from a hobbyist that things got real for you also?

I like to clean the glass and any object in the tank first, then the water and last the filter floss. This way anything stirred up and collected in the filter floss is removed. Also, in my bare bottom tanks I don't change all the filter floss at the same time. I will alternate them.
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 8 years ago
I hear you, that's a good process. However, I neglected to show that all my filters are off. That way nothing stirred up gets into the new filter floss. Also, I clean all my pads and change the floss each water change. I don't rely on my pads for biological filtration because I have ceramic bio rings in the filter as my filter media. Those rings house all my beneficial bacteria, so I wash my filter pads out in tap water to get them really clean. Mechanical filtration is important for me to keep my water polished.

Bare bottom tanks always look dirtier faster. ;-) On the other hand, they are much easier to keep clean.

I don't like the scrubbing of the bottom with all the poop in there. I would syphon all the poop fist then clean the bottom and since the poop was taken out you only have a light dust that the filter will pick up. But this is what I would do. Its just an idea.
I like the color of that glass on that tank. They put a certain amount of iron to get that color. I love it. Thanks man.
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 8 years ago
+Ruben theres a kind of muck that builds up on the bottom of the tank. The only way to get it off is by wiping it. The poop gets siphoned off, but the muck stays, that's why I wipe it. Also, the glass is clear. It has no color, its my walls that are blue and give it its color. Thanks for watching Ruben. Always great to hear your comments.

Whats the wc frequency?
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 8 years ago
+Antonio de Luca I used to do it every other day, but now its twice a week. I do a lil maintenance in between maybe a 25% if I feel I can't wait till WC day.
