I have wanted to keep discus ever since I began with Aquariums 20 years ago. Can I keep them in a 55 gal. tank, say three to five along with a few neon tetra. I would like to do a planted tank. Any recommendations on filter and lighting? I could get perhaps a larger filter too in case I would grow on to a 75 gal tank. thanks. I enjoy the plant world as much as the fish and currently keep Koi but they are plant eaters. I would like to learn more about the challenges of keeping discus and am ready for the change. Llewellyn

Hey man! Any tank no less than 50 gallons will be a great planted tank. I recommend you buy 6 young discus and grow them out. The best combination of discus tank mates in my opinion is 10 neon, cardinal or rummy nose tetras, and no more than 5 cory catfish. If the discus start pairing up, either put them in a different tank or separate the aquarium with a tank separators. Good luck!

Hey so my discus i got like 5 days ago 3 turquoise have laid eggs against the back wall of my tank and i am worried that the discus are too young to take care of them and the other fish in the tank will eat the fry or the eggs any pointers? the other fish are angelfish bosemani, peracox, and turquoise rainbows, cory cats, plecos, black skirt tetras, small little flounders. kuhili loaches and a guppy. Any help or advice would be great and i have bred other fish before just wasn't expecting this.

sweet videos man I have been watching your channel since I started my freshwater aquarium about a year a go now I need your advise. I just moved from the city to the country now i have well water and the nitrates coming out of my tap are at 30-40 ppm and my tank is at 60 ppm my nitrites and amonia are pretty much zero I just picked up a few more plants to see if that helps but anything i can put in my filter media that will get rid of it. also my ph is 8.2 anything i can do to lower it thanks!

You've got sand, plants, and about 20 fish crammed into that little tank... and two pairs of Discus fry. I hate you!!! I've got to do 100% weekly water changes in a 180 and a million other things to achieve the same results. It must help that the tank set-up is new and still in clean, pristine condition, but its still impressive. I wouldn't turn off the lights completely at night. Leave a night-lite on.
