went to my local fish store today and for the past few weeks ive seen this one 3inch discus slowly going down hill... fins slowly rotting off, constantly flared red gills, gill plates eroding, poor colour, very secluded attitude etc... ultimately a very poor fish...
ive been back into the hobby now for about 4 months after being out for over 5 years and have always said i dont want to keep discus but today i caved and bought the one in poor condition and its tank mate which was in far better condition.
i got them home and set up a hospital tank in little under 5 mins, dosed with wardley promethyasul and almost instantly his whole attitude changed! hes now actively swimming around in a calm inquisitive manner and overall is acting like a happy fish and has even eaten which apparently it hadnt done in a few days.
the shop had a price of $36 for 1 or 2 for $65 but i asked what deal they could do and they done the sick one for $9.
im not bagging my local store in any way as i am good friends with all the staff there and i know that behind the scenes they are struggling a bit so i put my name down for a position there but little do they know im planning on volunteering my services as needed.
sorry for the essay but this is me taking the step into the discus world in the sense of diving in the deep end feet first.. im fully prepared for him to pass away but atleast i will have tried.... if anyone reads this please wish me luck and subscribe as i will be filming my very first video on these discus tonight and doing regular updates on them as well as videos on my other tanks and general hobbies.

I'm a beginner in fish keeping, I have 1 beta in a 3 gallon tank, so far everything's been great. Down the road I want to buy a separate tank and buy more fish. But I need to know what type of fish to get? I want very active fish that will swim a lot and are pretty hardy. Pls keep in mind that I am a beginner at this new hobby and I hope to grow and succeed in fish keeping. Thanks!

Hi, I have a 180Litre tank 90cm x 45cm x 45cm, is this big enough to start with discus, I currently have it setup with 4 angels and some neon tetras but am contemplating swapping over the angels
for 4 discus? Would this work?

I wanted to get this some before John but I didn't want to risk losing money and I know a little bit about the Discuits all I know is that if you want your discus to eat more you have to raise the temperature from the heater in aquarium tank and if you want them to breed it has to be over 90 degrees in the aquarium that's all I know and I'm being honest that's all I know ✋

Any suggestions on how to introduce new discus to current discus in your tank? I got 2 discus at the same time since people say you really should have at least 2 together at a time since they're schooling fish. The one kept chasing the other then kinda backed off it but I had to take the other one back to the store cause he seemed to be getting sick and I wasn't risking my whole tank. Anyway, I just got another discus so my pigeon blood had a buddy and my original is being a jerk. There's a slight size difference (0.5in) but not a big size gap. My pigeon blood is a probable female and the new one (a turquoise or blue turk) is a possible male. Would you suggest moving the original discus into a breeding net for a week so the new comer can have time to peacefully explore the tank, settle in and acclimate properly before being further introduced to the head strong pigeon blood? That way perhaps the new one will be more up for dealing with my 1st discus's attitude.

After lots of water tests I found out I had good discus water (soft water, nitrate doesn't go over 20ppm, the other stuff holds steady at 0ppm), so I decided this free aquarium setup I really wanted to go big or go home and really make this a dream tank. Anyway so I make the leap into discus ownerhood. They're still fairly new but I noticed this strange behavior with the one and want to know if it's anything to worry about. The smallest of the two (only an inch smaller than the other) will often hang out in a corner. His tail and anal fin are always spread but he'll keep the top spiney/spikey front half of his dorsal down while the back half of the dorsal is more or less open. He's not as active as the bigger one either who always has flared fins. So is my little one just showing signs of nervousness, submissiveness, maybe it'll go away once he's more settled in, or could it be a sign that he's trying to get sick? He reminds me of a scolded child sulking in a corner and I've seen this flattening of the spiney part of the dorsal happen in established discus schools but I've seen schools where they all swam together with erect fins, and my two don't stick together.

+anh le I bought the breeding pair at that size in a job lot so can't say what life they had before me. All I know is they are about 6 inch now and are currently caring for fry in a planted tank.
anh le
anh le - 10 years ago
+Aarons Aquarium If you have a 3.5 inch discus that is breeding, there is something wrong. My bet is that it is severely stunned. Which is the problem with planted grow out tank. It is not impossible, but it takes A LOT of work.
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 10 years ago
Well said. Best thing to do is simply what you want to do, they're your fish and it's your tank. Just looking at your tank is proof in itself that you can have beautiful Discus and a nice planted tank.
Tom's Fish Tanks
Tom's Fish Tanks - 10 years ago
After a plethora of reading I have found countless examples of people growing them in planted tanks sucessfully.  In fact the winner of the Simply Discus 2009 grow out did so himself.  While he employed the use of Ozone to increase the Redox potential, it was proven it can be done.  I wanted to see if, all things being equal, if there would be any difference in size and health.  I think it goes without saying that the the results would likely be identical.  I feel the argument made on many discus forums is not that they will not grow out in a planted tank, but the results and success rate will exponentially higher in bare bottom tank.  I  can accept that premise.  How can it not if you eliminate all the variables of a planted tank.  Toss in the fact that many people do not know how to properly balance a planted tank, yet alone keep discus.  That often more times than not, is a recipe for disaster.  At this point I do not care if I win or not.  The facts speak for themselves.  Nothing I can do will change the mind of the discus purists.  Nothing they can do will change the mind of planted tank people like me.
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 10 years ago
At the moment I'm trying to dispel this "myth". I Have 1 inch, 2 inch and 3.5 inch Discus (which are breeding at the moment) growing in my planted tank. Look forward to seeing your experiment, are you going to do it if you don't win the contest?

Go to Craigslist get yourself a 75 gallon or better. Keep discus in schools of 6 to 9 they like to huddle in groups when they feel vibration or get spooked. heat the water to 86F. Lots of filtration/water changes. Since you are thinking/or have a 20 gallon i have to advice you to read a post or two at simplydiscus. com . Thanks KG great vid, Hans is the Man. I have 9 discus a mix of blue diamonds and dark angels. The tank looks stunning, THANK YOU HANS

KGTropicals
KGTropicals - 11 years ago
Well you've got a decision to make then, keep the girlfriend or ditch her and get the fish lol. Water changes are part of the deal when you are buying smaller Discus and raising them. Once they are grown the water changes can slow down but they still have to be done regularly to keep the fish happy and healthy.
Gewglesux
Gewglesux - 11 years ago

This is a open video site for comments, if you don't want people commenting and helping other people out then don't allow comments. There is no bad taste or anything against your store in my comment, did you even read my comment to make such a ridiculous accusation. Do you actually think people are going to read my answer to the question and then not buy discus at your store? I see you never bothered to answer the question in 3 months on your video but went out of the way to attack my answer.

I'm glad pet shops don't order them often because they only order one at a time and one discus alone without tank mates does not work.

Kinda bad taste to go on a retailers video and put in the comments to buy them somewhere else don't ya think. Especially someone who puts as much time into putting all of this info out as I do. I'm just sayin...
01lexus
01lexus - 11 years ago
Partly because they are not very common or the easiest fish to take care of so they are priced higher from breeders, many pet shops don't order a lot because they don't want to risk losing money so they only stock and sell a few at a premium. Partly because they are considered exotic and special so that automatically gets a premium price especially with demand. I feel they are pretty overpriced now that there are plenty of sources to acquire them, look on craigslist for someone offering babies
Mason Dodd
Mason Dodd - 11 years ago
Correct. All you need is warm, acidic, clean water. Though, having said that, small (baby discus) need very clean water for them to properly mature without retardation or future health issues. Nitrates <15ppm.

They cant be extremely hard to take care of because the ones at my LFS are still alive under their shitty conditions

I guess I'm in the "afraid" category. Always loved these fish but too afraid to screw up because of their price. Looking forward to next vid

I thought I had already responded to this but I guess my comp didn't send it. I want EVERYONE to get a new tank for Discus he he. We will breed them in house eventually but not sure when. The sooner the better!!!

Good stuff! Can't wait to see more on your discus series. Everybody seems to scare you away from keeping discus because of all the "myths"

I think you are trying to get me to get another tank lol! You know me, I will get some smaller guys and watch them grow. I do hope to see a video of how they breed and raise their fry since it is so different from what people may expect and pretty cool. Wonder if sexing them is like angels? Are you still planning to breed any in house?
