OMG listen to this advice Dustin is so correct. The current tank I have now is a 55 show with 2 Fluval FX6's. Dont start with the over kill. The 2 best cycle chemicals I have found is ATM colony or Sea Chem Stability and even with the use of these you still need to go very slow. This tank went from start to the time I had a full load took 6 months. I started with the ATM dosed 3 times a week for 2 weeks. Then added 3 bristle nose catfish. kept them for ~3 weeks. Then added 4 fish. This tank is an African Chiclids. The reason for the 2 FX6's is that I love a tank with more than a full load. My home is on a deep water well, I have a automated drip system the exchanges ~26g /day. I firmly believe that you can over filter but you need to keep fish that can handle the currents 2 such filters will create. Along with the 2 FX's I also have 4 power heads with a controller that switch them left side rear pump and right side front pump, they switch every 4 hours. They are 150g/hour so this action keeps waste off the bottom sub straight. I had 325's but they added to much heat and the currents also were to much. I clean the FX's every 6 months rotating filter 1 then 3 moths later clean filter 2. I got this idea from a visit to the Georgia Aquarium after a long talk with one of the biologist. I have 40 plus fish that are in the 3 to 4 inch in size that are so happy. I have not added any fish over a year now. So take your time use plenty of filtration and do those water changes or if you're on a well setup a drip system

Hey Dustin, been trawling through your vids down here in New Zealand....Cheers, you have just saved the lives of a bunch of Tetras. I have just started my first planted tank last week and was going to put in 20 tetras (because they are selling them in 20's on special) and I thought tht it would be good if I kept up the water changes. I will not do this now but I thought that they needed to be in a tank with atleast 6 of them to be happy? Anyway, keep up the top work! Kia Ora Bro!

Oscars are great fish, they get to know their owners and are great fish. I had two Oscars for 4 years and just had to give them up. One, they get way to big..I live in an apartment, can't have a 250 gallon tank, two, they are by far one of the DIRTIEST fish out there. Even with multiple canister filters it still doeant help.

I love my Oscar. I have had several Oscars over the years and they are by far the easiest and most fun to have in a tank. The two downsides to owning an Oscar, you can't have other fish in the tank unless it's a really big tank and the other fish are equally as big you can't have but one or two live plants because they will tear up jack. I have had the Albino Red, and Tiger Oscar. The size of the tank really does make a difference.

Fishless cycle first before adding fish, that should be everyone's mindset. I've done this with all my tanks and have never had a death from adding fish all at once. Also acclimate for at least 1 hour, 2 is better

Biggest personal blunder: Had a tank w/8 kinds of Tetras & an ottocinclis [sp?]. Bought 2 Tinfoil Barbs. Next morning, I had 2 Tinfoils, 3 kinds of Tetras, and 1/2 an Ottocinclus. How DO you spell that, anyway?
Vipstephen
Vipstephen - 12 years ago
Yeah,..... if you cycle fishless you can and should add most of your fish in at once, otherwise the purpose of fishless cycling is spoiled. Your bacteria will die off slowly to match the # of fish u put in if you don't and you fishless cycle. If you cycle with fish though, then definitely, add them in slowly.

Step 1 get a nucket and a long piece of airline tubing step 2 empty the bag of fish into the bucket and begin a siphon with the air tubing Step 3 wait 15 minutes and put the fish in the tank. step 4 ????? step 5 PROFIT!

A lot of the beginner info on the internets is hocus pocus that someone heard off of their mate. i.e. if you ask what size of tank do I need for XYZ people will tell you that you need a tank the size of your house.. but they can't tell you were they got their info from. If you want to know something about fish try looking for research papers on google scholar instead :)

You could use a bottle of nitrifying bacteria to speed up the cycling process. That is what they do on TANKED and in large aquariums

You should really put in the 500 some oscars a arowana a gar and a red tail catfish and if you want to Dustin a freshwater strip gray. That would be totally BOSS.

it helps reduce agression of african cichlids to add all your fish at once but you need to cycle your tank and know how much fish your tank can take.
