@playboxfan When we buy discus fish we should buy them in a whole group. If you try to introduce to older discus new ones in particular if there is a pair ,it is very likely to have fights.New and small discus may be chased to death.Breeding them it is really difficult and in most cases they eat their own eggs.

but a friend of mine who also keeps discus advised that i divide them , and i did now everything seems fine but ill keep an eye for them incase of anything going wrong. sorry for the long reply.

and by the way , the tank is not newly setup , its only the design i just made it, the tank has been here for like 5-6 months now containing only the red melon pair and i used it at first as a breeding tank but with no success at spawning even tho i witnessed the pair cleaning the tube , recently i had the pair constantly fighting the snow white and blue diamond as they were newly added to the tank and that caused the new discus not to eat and very shy and cornered

@Lassiegreece thanks for the advise , i removed the black knife and the yellow gourami as they are fast swimmers and they do disturb the discus as i observed them following your advise , ill post an update of my aquarium in the near future just waiting for the new discus to finish quarantine time, thanks again lassie.

@playboxfan It is very nice but it needs some time to settle because it is brand new.Pay attention to your discus behaviour if they are uneasy it is very possible that your black knife fish or the clown disturb them during the night and frighten them.Wait for some days and you will see.Remember that discus are very delicate fish and they want a quiet life...

@ILLGRIPSKI Thank you.Yes discus fish are compatible only with easy going fish, even fast swimmers can stress them a lot.Of the best companions are cardinal tetras and corydoras catfish.Mind you if you need algae cleaners choose plecos of the ancictrus family. The others can suck your discus during the night as they get older and drive them mad soon...

Beautiful tank, love the live plants and the idea of combining cardinals and neons is very unique.

@Cannonball970 There is chaos in the discus names.Exactly the same discus-fish colour is called in different ways form breeder to breeder so I don't care about the name any more.I look for healthy young discus fish which are as round as possible,I want them to have realtively small eyes (red or amber) and not to be afraid of my hand when I raise it close to their aquarium. These two could be anything betweed "pigeon bloods" or "marlboro",probably discus muts.
Cannonball970
Cannonball970 - 13 years ago
Whoa I don't know if it's your camera or what but those first two orange ones look like they have multi-colored splotches, are they discus muts or a special type? Just curious because they look awesome

@aquiyosoyelrey Just have a look at my answers to the other comments here and you know all the secrets.Keeping hybrid discus (not wild and not breeding them) is like keeping any other tropical fish.In one sentence."Do not overcrowd them, feed them mainly granules two or three times per day only as much as they can consume in a few mimutes, use tap water if it doesn't contain any harmful substances and the ph is no more than 7 and change one fifth of the water every week."

More like a tetra aquarium.. but hell, its not like my discus tank isn't half tetra ;)
Lassiegreece
Lassiegreece - 13 years ago
@je24t2 No,I don't I just add a thick blue liquid that disolves chlorine and I add some vitamins every week that I make a water change of approximately 70 litres.

@thomashof415 Not much as I didn't buy the aquarium ready from a company but it was created piece by piece at home.
Thomas Hofbauer

How much did you spend?
Lassiegreece
Lassiegreece - 13 years ago
@samuelrayniak I don't. I use tap water. The ph is 7 .These discus fish are hybrids and not wild,so most of them are grown up in a ph 7.I started keeping discus fish a few years ago and I was driven mad with the advice by all "experts". If I had followed their advice in everything it would have cost me a fortune without a reason.I also noticed that young discus fish do not grow well in soft water. However, you need soft water for pairs and wild fish.

@sapiberbulu think of it this way, your tank is like a big soda bottle If you shake it up enough (surface agitation from filter, air pump, etc...) your soda (water) will become flat (no co2 in the water). It is recommended to use an air pump at night because once the lights go out, plants take up oxygen in the water in place of light to grow. This can drastically cut down the available amount of O2 in the water sometimes even suffocating fish to death. Its just best to not run air with lights on
onassis sasongko
onassis sasongko - 14 years ago
@ryan12381793 i use both.. CO2 and air pump. i use air pump with timer not all day. and i use tetra CO2.. they growing fast and healthy.. i think the theory to not using air pump is wrong.. maybe.. i also have discus in my tank so i have to use air pump for circulation

@Lassiegreece either way your tank is absolutely beautiful! great job
Lassiegreece
Lassiegreece - 14 years ago
@ryan12381793 All my plants have been growing really fast although I have never used a Co2 system.Probably the amount of Co2 produced naturally in it is enough to keep them alive and healthy.Mind you that I only keep hardy species like anubias, valisnerias tiger, cryptocorines etc. They used to grow even faster when I had gravel but it'd fine with sand as well.
Ryan Cline
Ryan Cline - 14 years ago
Im guessing you dont have a co2 system seeing you are using an air pump and air stone cuz that would just outgass all the co2 in the water.
Milo Madzin
Milo Madzin - 14 years ago
I like it, but I think that there are too many fish for that tank.

@iver1985 I bought sand of neutral ph.Actually I was very lucky because I found it not at a pet store but in a store that sells building stuff. He has imported this type of sand especially for aquarists.

@Lassiegreece---you really just use water straight from the tap?you dont use REVERSE OSMOSIS?HOWCOME YOUR WATER LOOK SO CLEAR THEN.how about the PH of your water?did any of your discus laid eggs? i have 4marlboro red,my tank is bare bottom, cuz its easy to clean.my PH is 6.5 water temp 84.
Lassiegreece
Lassiegreece - 14 years ago
@jjgentle1821 No,quite the opposite. It is very easy because you don't have to clean very often.Actually a number of bacteria accumulated at the bottom are necessary for the good growth of discus fish. Now I have replaced the gravel with sand and I almost never clean it. An easy going aquarium that is filled with water straight from the tap.
jjgentle1821
jjgentle1821 - 14 years ago
that must be really hard to clean?

@thefishguy89 Thank you,all you need is a relatively big tank.Discus are not difficult to keep if you don't overcrowd them and your tap water is not very hard.A ph at 7 for hybrid discus is fine.

I think that both of them would like to try the same type of food. However,if you think that you want a combination, put the two types if food in the same plastic container and mix them.Feed by hand or put the new mixture in the automatic dispenser.

if you can keep your tank at a consistent 6.5 you will be fine... its when your ph bounces you normally lose fish.. but if you can keepp it at a steady 6.5 everyone should live happily

Thank you, although they are not the cheapest fish to buy they didn't cost me that much as I tried to look for good prices in different stores.I haven't bought the most expensive specimens but I always looked for healthy little discus as round as possible.

Dear Ingiequeen, If you have the right filter for the litres your aquarium holds, fill it up only with the porous material for the good bacteria to settle and put the one sponge at the top, turn on the heater at 29 degrees Celcius and after one week to ten days all cloudness must be gone.Introduce only two cardinal tetras for two days and if they look fine continue with the rest and the plecos. After five more days I would put my first two discus fish.
