You can use K1 Micro which can be found on amazon: http://amzn.to/2v30wBk
Or you could also use plastic pot scubbers that are found in most dollar stores but K1 is my top choice though

Why not just buy a canister filter? That's a lot of work for a 30 gallon tank. lmfao

How do you get the water to leave the tank and enter into the sump? Obviously the water pump in the sump causes it to return to the tank. But what is causing the water to leave the aquarium initially?
kanga
kanga - 7 years ago
Philip Padalino There is a pump in the aquarium that pumps water into the sump, the sump then "overflows" back into the aquarium by gravity...

too much Filtration for this size tank taking into consideration the amount of fish it's supporting. the bacteria Anaerobic and aerobic both, are never going to be able to colonize all the extra filters in place here. you're only going to be able to produce the quantity of bacteria that the Amonia the fish can produce thus most of culture will be so thinly spread throughout your system it'll be next to useless. saying that, the plus is.... your idea, can be used as an alternate mechanical addition.. and that will, work. another plus would be..if you ever decide to Overstock ..then...the bacteria would multiply accordingly. and then, your system will come into its own.
so..
good idea.
neat set up.
but overkill.
Chuck in some more fish..then we'll see.

Hanhanz012 It is biological filter media. It is home for beneficial bacteria that reduce harmful ammonia to nitrite and nitrate. The constant moving of the media also kills off older bacteria that aren't too active

I mean, you've a wrong filter sequence. The Water must first passed the matt, then the K1. The k1 micro needs air for moving and for working effictive, 1liter air per liter k1 micro . The K1 micro determines Ammonia and nitrit, the result is nitrat. as last must the water passed as next step the ... hmmm, in german we say "blähton" to the small red balls, sorry for my bad english. This balls determines the nitrate. But your filter is really small, but for the 3-4 fishes enought. When you calculate your bio filter in the dimensions greater, you don't need the Canister filter. Put a bag of seachem purigen in your sump filter and you have crystal clear water.

From the sump into the tank? Yes, once the sump fills to its max level it goes through two overflows (in case one gets clogged) and back into the tank.

how do I do one of these im doing a window ledge plant pot but the silicone keeps coming loose
Home Aquatics Hobby
Home Aquatics Hobby - 8 years ago
+Serena Bowman are you putting silicone on the plastic? Usually plant pots like that are made of pvc and silicone does not adhere to plastics very well. I'd recommend acrylic glue for that type of application. Acrylic is a type of plastic and the acrylic glue bonds it together on a molecular level. I had to use the acrylic glue on this project since the box was made of acrylic, the silicone would not hold any of the pieces together. Hope I could help, any questions let me know!

Why another homemade filter if you already have one running? Just wanted more filtration or are you planning on moving the one you bought somewhere else?
Home Aquatics Hobby
Home Aquatics Hobby - 8 years ago
+Matt Cali Technically yes and no. You could but it's more for biological filtration than it is for mechanical. It does very little mechanical filtration but with a little modification it could be.

Home Aquatics Hobby
Home Aquatics Hobby - 8 years ago
+Carter Neal Which container are you referring to? I have a canister filter on this tank also. As for the DIY filter, there's Kaldnes K1 Micro and Aquaponics clay balls in there as well. The container was an old recycled e cigarette lighter box that I was able to pick up from my job. Any container would work for this though.
