NEW FISH for the Discus Tank! // Unboxing & Discus Update

Help support my fish room rebuild ► http://solidgoldaquatics.com/rebuild/ I realized that you guys haven't had an update on my new discus in three months... can that possibly be right?! WOW, time flies! In this video, you'll find out how I overcame their initial shyness, what changes I have made to the tank, what their favorite food is, and what new fish I have in quarantine right now to eventually add to the discus tank! p.s. I usually upload on Fridays and Tuesdays. This was meant to be a Tuesday video, but ended up being a bit late... sorry! ;) p.p.s. I hope my explanation of YouTube's so-called "adpocalypse" doesn't sound like complaining because that wasn't my intention at all! Solid Gold Aquatics in future is say with discus power feed them brine shrimp and blood worms then try what other food you might want them on it's best to get them to recover from shipment and all the stress of a new environment before then putting them on a diet

Solid Gold Aquatics the black phantom tetras may not be the best fit with the discus. Very few tetras get along with discus and those that do are the smaller elongated bodied tetras. Your black phantoms will out-compete the discus for food. A better fit would have been rummy nose or cardinal/neon tetras.

Solid Gold Aquatics I love your videos, it's nice to see a community that care as much about fish as I do. My white ranchu Ringo absolutely LOVES bloodworms. lately he's been getting these large white spots on his tail that seem the disappear when taken out of the water and then instantly reappear when he goes back under. Do you know what this is and how I can cure it? I've tried white spot treatment and Melafix which worked before but it keeps coming back and the water quality is fine.

Solid Gold Aquatics so I had a question, the other day I sadly lost my fish Becky. when i found her in the morning she didn't have any scales up to her gills. I had just checked the water levels the previous night due to her swimming weirdly. everything in the tank was fine. What do u think could be going on? I was wondering if she had some sort of parasite, bacteria, or if the other fish could have eaten them off of her somehow. If there is bacteria or anything in the tank I want to treat as soon as possible but know I treated for the right thing. pls help

About 2 years ago (when I was 11)
I got my first goldfish
I didn't know nothing
About goldfish
It was 2 commits in quarter gallon tank
It was just tap water
Fish tank: made of plastic
No filter
And just flake food they lived for 2 days because I murdered them by feeding the over 30 flakes
Then I got a 5 gallon with 3 commits
I set it up at night
And the next morning we went to pet store and got fish
Then a month later I saw your videos but my parents said it's stupid and fake
I kept begging them for about a year then we went to the store and got a ten gallon I knew it wasn't enough but it was all we could get.
3 month later we bought a 40 gallon
All my fish died and we got knew ones
Then they died again
(Remember I watched all your videos)
And then we got a fantail and a red cap oranda there still small but there growing they are so cute
But we still haven't set up the 40 gallon. It's been there for almost a year
We might set it up this month
Or next month
My dad said the cycling the aquarium thing is just a myth there's already bacteria in the "filter"
But this time we will cycle it

Jennie - I've just stumbled upon your YouTube selections so you may already be doing this or have looked into it ---- Have you considered creating a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization based mostly on educational offerings to the (www) community?  You may be able to do this and therefore receive tax-free donations to further your cause.  Community educational programming of a modest sort might be necessary, but then that seems like something in which you would excel.  So - just curious if that would help you?

This could be one affected by a drop in alkalinity. Although they come from soft water a little bit of calcium rich rock can inhibit alkalinity drop.

In my past communities dither fish worked well. I used widow tetras.

Stick to a mix of frozen mixed food as it generally always gets eaten in less than 3mins also dry food is never eaten with the same enthusiasm and just ends up polluting the water
Dan Spangler
Dan Spangler - 3 years ago
i noticed you have most the tank covered by the glass canopy, there may not be enough air getting to the water. in other videos people have said that fish can suffocate if only spaces for tubes are cut. you may need more open space for gas transfer. also noticed you keep your UV on all the time. In this filter it will degrade the plasics over time (cheap chinese plastic). Its a great filter. aquatop is re-labeled sun-sun. very cheap at around $80 bucks cant beat it, but the UV WILL destroy the filter. I leave mine on for around 1 hour at a time, just enough to cycle the tank, as needed.

Solid Gold Aquatics, I found your channel today on from one of Joey's videos. I love what you do and I binge watched your some of your videos since. I have one question for you. I'm in high school rn so this won't happen anytime soon, I'd like to start exploring the world of goldfish care and breeding at some point, and I was wondering if when my skills are up and ready (whenever that may be) would you ever think of selling some of your fish or if you could provide some advice that would be great. Best wishes and good luck with your discussion tank.

I noticed with my discus, that having constant variety keeps them interested with food. I feed them pellets first, and a couple hours later I give them frozen treats (blood worms or beefheart). Took them a while to get use to it but they got use to it and now they gobble up discus biogold mixed with tetra granuals, and then frozens after! They are little piggies for sure :)

Suggestions: heavily plant your tank, and paint the back and sides black. Both of these will give comfort and a sense of security.
Shaden0040
Shaden0040 - 3 years ago
So paint it light grey or off white. The reason for painting is to cut down visibility outside the tank so they do not get startled as often.

You should do an update on your black moors!! I have two and one keeps swimming to the top. He would slowly flip over but fix himself upright. It seemed like swim bladder disease so I held off the food for 48 hours and gave two peas to them for three days. He seemed better when I didn't feed him and after I started to feed fish flakes (I soaked them in water before feeding for them to sink), he seemed to be getting worse. He's always had a tiny white slime blotch on one of his fins and treated him for excess slime. I'm not sure what to do, any help?

I had an albino bristlenose longfin pleco i gave to my brother amd we still have it! Also i have a school of 7 diamond tetras and the males with sometimes swin up to the females flare up the fins (they have a redish-purple hue to the fins so it looks awesome!) and they vibrate! Hope you have some more updates with this tank soon!

One critique for this educational and fabulous video as always. There is no real hierarchy in Totem Poles, the bottom Totem is actually the most important to the overall story or message. But either way they're all important really, not sure where the saying came from but it's false. We've all been living on the same continent and so many people have this common misconception of Totem Poles.

Hey! I love your vids! Tip: you shouldn't put the frozen food directly into the tank. You should put the cube of frozen food into a net, and just wait until it defrosts and then wash it. If you take a look at the water that comes out of the frozen food you'll realise how dirty it is ;)

PS: Love from Spain!

Sorry you had to find out the hard way regarding the discus. I used to keep them in 70's and 80's. They require clean water - I used to have to do weekly water changes. Old fashioned decor which was a brick for them to hide behind and not much else. Typical water temp was 84-86 F. Used to feed tubifex black worms, brine shrimp, and chopped beef heart. Today there are better formulations i's sure. Yes, these are incredibly skittish fish, but they get a little more friendlier over time

Fish like discus need dither fish to help them feel safe and confident. Discus are delicate and smaller/medium sized fish. In the wild they become food for other fish and animals. Get yourself a large school of tetras (rummy nose, cardinals, or being are popular with discuss) or even corydoras. The fish will see the activity level of the smaller fish and assume its safe to be out and unhidden. The school can also be turned into target fish to have the discus focus any again to them. The large school will confuse the discuss from targeting an individual fish and keep everyone safe and happy.

Yeay for plants! I think the discus will really appreciate it! In my LFS, they have a huge display aquarium with plants and discus, and they aren't shy at all!

Also, good luck with the spider wood.... It's a love hate relationship with mine. I love its look, but it's so moldy! I had it since March, and I still need to clean it once a week with a toothbrush and hydrogen peroxyde. It shoots long stringy mold everywhere, and I had to throw away all my moss that was on it (2 Tropica 1-2-Grow), because the mold went into them, and caused stagnation and blue-green algae. Also, all the small wood strings rotted and broke down since.

Keeping different fish will make things more exciting for both yourself and your viewers! It will let you be inspired and allow you to have many more different types of videos than you previously thought possible. Your new fish room build will open so many possibilities for both yourself and your viewers. Besides the dedicated water line what other things are you going to start on your fish room in the near future?

Yes, bristlenose plecos are the only plecos that are possible to keep with goldfish since they're smaller and less aggressive than many other plecos! Even then, I have heard some reports of an occasional BN pleco going "rogue" and deciding to snack on a goldfish, so it's still recommended to keep a close eye on them of course. :)

Discus... not the biggest fan - and I had mine for almost a decade (the oldest got to 12)! They didn't eat for ages to begin with and were shy. They got better obviously, but I'll never keep them again. The water changers are a pain and if you don't keep them up, the discus will stunt. I had mine with clown loaches, which are still going strong and I got them before my discus so they're about 13-14 years old now. I even have one rummynose tetra left, which is about 9 years old (you can see how the longevity and health of all my fish was helped by the discus maintenance routine, i.e. pristine water).

Luke Thompson
Luke Thompson - 3 years ago
Ah okay that makes sense i didnt take into account that they could have been raised at higher ph than what most keepers keep them at.
Solid Gold Aquatics
Solid Gold Aquatics - 3 years ago
Many tank raised discus (as these are) are actually accustomed to slightly higher pH than what they would normally experience if they were living in the wild. For these discus, a pH of 7.2 is fine and it's important that it doesn't fluctuate. Trying to lower or raise your pH for various reasons often actually does more harm than good because once you start messing with pH, it's very tough to keep it consistently stable and changes in pH can be detrimental to their health.

I got my 4 discus a few weeks after yours. I have them in a planted tank and have experienced simular behaviour in terms of shyness. They are very scared. I talked to the breeder for tips. And they reccomend to add more discus, as they feel more comfortable in a larger group. They began being less shy after a while, but in the beginning i underfed them sadly, I wasn't aware. So the breeder gave me a heads up their fat reserves was all burned out! So I started feeding more, and they are all healthy and happy. But more feeding resulted in them feeling less like they needed to fetch food and to be more careful! Which makes sence. I will add more fish in the future when i find some that I like. And I believe that will help out the shyness.

Discus rarely eat pellets from my experience. I've found beefheart if the best for young discus. For the amount of times that I have tried to get them to eat pellets they won't. Mine also enjoy flakes which they get fed in between beefheart or livefood feedings. I've also found that if there's less than 5 discus problems do appear. Also the pecking order can get out of hand in discus tanks with such small groups and can lead to stunting. Good luck !

Solid Gold Aquatics sometimes, don't worry I also have discus and it's similar to an issue I had, that was the only reason I was pointing it out. Once I lowered my pH, it's now at 6.5 they seemed more active and were eating much better. I know all the stuff on wild/domestic bred but could be interesting to try. Also with the shyness maybe try lowering the LED wattage I found this encourage mine to come out more and not dart away so quickly! I also started feeding mine off tongs, they now respond when I walk past the tank which could maybe also help in developing a bond/decreasing the need for them to hide!

Those barbs react like that cuz they are males and compete between each other (pack order) or just to look good for females

For this kind of fish (their category).. I often like the males better

Have you tried Australian freeze dried blackworms? (not tubifex - tubifex and black worms are different species)...my angelfish, guppies and tetras all love them ...and you can squish the cube onto the glass for them to peck at it....SERA-O-NIPS are good too.....and then there is earthworms....I have a worm farm just for my fish....my oscar and angels love worms....big worms for the oscar and baby worms for the angels...you could add some potted aquarium plants for a barrier...much easier to clean around...

I was a long time discus keeper. I had had 8 in 65 gallon tank bought from a very famous south florida breeder. I had them for many many years and had many ups and downs. Most said I would kill some but that never happened till I sold the tank and 8 highly prized discus. I had fake plants, wood, etc. but ended up going with a live planted tank and they loved it and so did I. Lots more work though. Yes, they can be quite spooky. Strangers would make them freak out and often times even I would I and just hoped the didn't crack the glass or kill themselves. I went thru all the stress they will give you thinking one might die. Once you get to know your discus and they know you things change. The are really interesting fish to observe. Amazing personalities. Just turn out all the lights and light up a special stoogie and lay on the couch and watch them till you fall asleep. In my mind this is the best way to really see them act as natural as possible in a tank.
I never got them to eat pellets. It was always frozen food or frozen blood worms and I had a bad habit feeding them live blood worms. Feed them live blood worms and your discus will love you forever! Well until you don't do waters changes on time!

Your fish are soo pretty. You said they were very shy and all. Maybe you could add some plants (especially floating plants) discus love to hide and dont like direct light. They will feel much better trust me. And you should add a few fish because a shoal of discus should have at least y fish in them. Anyway i love your work. Keep it up

Discus are shy and a hard scape is good for them. I have several and added dither fish. Rainbow fish and other tetra fish work well.  When the Discus see these dither fish swimming around, they see that all is safe and will swim around as well.  Discus do like plants.

Ive kept discus for awhile ...there a challenge at first but 2 things you need to know..1..they love water changes and not to be a in heavy decorated tank. 2. be careful mixing sources and added fish...they are very prone to diseases...i only get from one source..luckily the source i get it from has shit ton of variety with quality discus.....the source i mine from also were accilimated to pellet food....also if u break the pellets into very fine pieces they will swallow it better...also try dry blackworms...they go crazy over that more than bloodworms and its less messy

Solid Gold Aquatics sure, I keep discus myself... never had goldfish... just thought if you've heard of it?
Solid Gold Aquatics
Solid Gold Aquatics - 3 years ago
Ooh, I would disagree. Discus like warm water (80+ degrees F) and it wouldn't be good to keep goldfish at such high temps long-term. Discus are also territorial and are quite nippy and I don't think they would let the goldfish get enough food, since they're so much faster than goldfish. And if we're talking wild-type discus, they need water with a low pH, which wouldn't be good for goldfish, who like neutral or higher pH. Not a good mix!

Solid Gold Aquatics
Solid Gold Aquatics - 3 years ago
Goldfish do that a lot, sometimes for no reason (at least not a reason you can do anything about). One way goldfish can control the inflation of their swim bladder is through the pneumatic duct in their esophagus that leads to the swim bladder. I don't know exactly why (and I can't find any research about this either) but for some reason my goldfish who have had swim bladder issues have also tended to be habitual "air-gulpers". I think they may be struggling with regulating their swim bladder, so they're gulping excess air in an attempt to regulate it.

JTB Reptiles
JTB Reptiles - 3 years ago
Solid Gold Aquatics I imagine that to be the case, although I'd still be inclined to believe that thousands upon millions of years of evolution to the natural habitat will have more hold on requirements than a few years of captive breeding. Dogs still like to walk, after all ;)
Solid Gold Aquatics
Solid Gold Aquatics - 3 years ago
Wild caught discus need a low pH. But these days so many of these colorful morphs have been tank-raised in water with a slightly higher pH, so they're accustomed to it. As long as the pH doesn't fluctuate, most tank-raised discus will do just fine with a pH of 7.2 like what I have here. :)
