The fish will run away if they don't want to be pet. They don't love getting pet, but it doesn't harm them anyway.

Slime coat doesn't come off all that easily, But these discus didn't seem to stay around for the petting so I don't think they care for it much. Ive had fish though that while cleaning the aquarium they would swim against my hand and I would kinda pet them but never force it upon them like so.

@JesusRiveraA Old but great advice. To anyone out there wondering how you can pet your fish, stick your hand in the water, don't do any sudden jolts with your hand, do really fluid and smooth motions, attempt to maybe hand feed them, let them come to you (they will) when they do, slowly and gently move towards them, before you know it you will be petting them

@TheLeopardGoddess i believe that is why he only was stroking their spines with the back of his fingers. the oils on your hand are excreted from the palm and inside of your fingers, and there isn't much essential slime coat on a fish's spines.

OMG patting your fish can remove its slime coat which can lead to illness or death. SHAME ON YOU! :P I pat my Geophagus brasiliensis all the time!
