Bring back tank at a time! :)

I know this is old, but I’m hoping you still check the comments every now and then. I have only been keeping fish for 6 months or so, but I’ve been wanting to keep African cichlids. I got a 40 Breeder and set it up as a mini version of this one from this video, except with a sand substrate. I ordered vallisneria from you, and planted it in there, hoping to get it established before adding fish. I was planning on getting small fish to start out, but I came upon an opportunity to get a couple of yellow labs and 5 yellow tail acei from a friend for a steal. He was getting rid of them. I put them in the tank and immediately regretted not putting them in my 75 Gallon instead. So I ended up switching the community fish in the 75 to the 40B and then putting the Africans in the 75. It has black gravel. I will look into adding some gray coast too. So my problem is that they must be pulling up the vallisneria, which melted back pretty badly but is still throwing out runners. Or at least it was when it would stay planted. Lol any recommendations? I do have some rocks in the middle of the tank too, but it’s been a few days, and so far I’ve been replanting the vallisneria every day at least once. I just left it floating today. Help! I’m in love with the look of live plants, so I want to make this work!

Leslie Scheetz - 7 years ago
Not the little pots that they come in right? What sort of pot? Thanks for the reply!
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
If they are pulling them up you don’t have many options. You could grow them in a pot in a different aquarium and then when established move them to the tank with the Africans.

For the hydro 3 filter (or any sponge filter) what is the function of the uplift tube? does the uplift tube add flow thru the sponge? thanks
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
Well it helps keep control of the bubbles producing a more even flow. Technically the longer the tube the more lift you get.

If gray coast is a type of coarse sand, would you consider eco complete a coarse sand, or a fine gravel?
Christopher O'Brien
Christopher O'Brien - 7 years ago
Aquarium Co-Op Thanks for the advice Cory!
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
+Christopher O'Brien well it would depend on the type of food you feed. If they have to dig into the substrate to get the food sharp substrate is a problem. If you feed like repashy and frozen blood worms it's not a problem in my experience
Christopher O'Brien

I'm very much into saltwater tanks (120g, 10g nano, 40b) and only a small 10g freshwater tank with a few plants and some mollies, i think its time for them to get an upgrade! i picked up a few extra tanks from petco the other week ($1 per gallon sale, wooohoooo frag tanks!) Ive wanted to do a planted tank but didn't have any inspiration you sir have given me some hope! Gonna start a 40b planted tank, Thank you!

I have been looking forward to this video so thanks, great!
But also a couple of questions.
# So no hiding places other than the Valisneria (against "common knowledge")?
# I have purple Acei that constantly sift the fine sand I use and also a group of clown loaches. Will they be ok with the course substrate or should I do something differently?
Boris Swede
Boris Swede - 8 years ago
How would the clown loaches do in a tank like yours and what is the smallest size gravel/sand for good plant growth? 1-3mm, 3-5mm?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
They'd be fine on multiple types of substrates. I wouldn't say no hiding spots is against common knowledge. It's a common tactic to not use hiding places with africans and stock heavy. For instance moorii being a deepwater hap are open swimmers and don't utilize hiding spots. I think most african cichlids get lumped together which is a mistake.

Great video. I always thought African Cichlids pulled up plants? Always learning!

In my experience they dig pits to breed, which does dislodge the plants. But I personally don't see them pull them up. So in this tank they could be using the open flat space to breed with no need to dig as much.

Could someone just cut out that middle tube from the first sponge you showed and then attach a never clog airstone? Sadly, all the sponge filters I own are like the first one and it drives me nuts when it clogs. All the stores where i live sell the same type with the tube that goes all the way down.

In theory yes, but you need to make sure not to break off the nipple. I find the plastic gets brittle on those type of sponge filters after some use.

Hey cory I have African cichlids also and I am trying a planted tank with the same plants you are using. The problem I am having is the fish keep pulling out the plants any tips you could give me
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
What percentage of veggies are you feedin in their diet? You're mixing malawi and tangs, the fronts want heavy protein and the moorii would prefer something with lots of veggie content in it as well to the protein. A lot of time plants are terrorized by fish when they need more veggie in their diet.

My first thought with this video was that the blue Dolphins will pull that jungle Val out when they get bigger. I was surprised Cory didn't use Anubias, Java fern, and Java moss all tied to rocks and wood.
Nathan Hammond
Nathan Hammond - 8 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op they are fronts and blue dolphins. Fronts leave the plants alone but the dolphins pull them up but they leave my Anubis alone. The plants are vallis

Great video, tiles are an interesting idea. In a dirt / aquasoil tank would there be an increased risk of anaerobic substrate using this method?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
I think there would be increased risk yes, but in general dirt tanks have this problem already anyways.

Will watch in full later, but quick question-what exactly is the point of the uplift tube in the sponge filter?
John Martinez
John Martinez - 8 years ago
Gotcha. Makes sense, thanks!

The theory is that when the bubbles and water traveling are contained in a tube, it creates more suction through the sponge. In testing this is true but only marginally. The benefits vs the extra time to clean etc for me isn't worth it as I service hundreds of sponge filters monthly.

Lol glass tops are the one thing I can't deal with. First two I ever had, the handle slipped out of my hands during cleaning and the glass shattered and went all over my aquarium. Luckily I have another aquarium that I was able to put my fish in so I could make sure they stay safe while I got all the glass out. Hoods look ugly on larger tanks too in my opinion, but it's whatever. I rather not risk dropping glass again. Cut myself pretty bad the second time lol. ALL FISH SURVIVED AND NONE WERE INJURED! Oh, and I still have my 10 gallon laying around (it was my first aquarium ever). What should I do with it? I'm thinking maybe an Axolotl tank (My local fish store picks up like 3/4 Axolotl's every month) or a nano reef.. I would love to hear your guys' opinion on it!

+Anthony Ragan I like the idea, I have a marineland hood though. It's ugly and round (My entire house is modern with sharp edges so it throws everything off) so I might have to give that a try lol

Anymore I've taken to building my own lids with window screen kits and 1/4" mesh. I like it a lot better than the glass lids.

Why not use some nice rocks instead of the tiles ?? Would be more natural, beautiful and give the fish places to hide and break the line of sight

Normally I use wood or rock to do this. But I wanted everyone to be able to do it so I used tiles from a hardware store. Not everyone has access to the right rock/wood. On top of that using the tile allows for the breeding areas that the fish will need to spawn on. Also they are spots where feeding is done easily. On top of all of that, moorii are open water simmers and will want open territories, rocks or wood would hinder such swimming in something as small as a 75 gallon aquarium.

Cory how many and which finnex lights should i put under a 75 gal for good plant growth ? thanks !
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
I doubt it'd be too much light, and with the right skill probably anything, 75g is still a tall tank for dwarf baby tears, so you'd need the skill to go along with the light to pull something like that off typically.
Alex Cordovez
Alex Cordovez - 8 years ago

I'd say you could probably get away with 1 fluval fresh 2.0 or a finnex 24/7 and a finnex stingray light combo.

Love the video as usual!!;) also, I know I don't really have credit to critique you- but something you might consider trying is to space out your intro from the beginning commentary. Ex. Your transition from your "why to watch to the end" and your cool green intro. It doesn't really matter, but it might make it a little smoother:)

Looking forward to seeing this. I know labs are known for being docile but my experience with them has been that are are nasty little fish. Mean as hell. I think when people say they're docile they mean relative to the mbuna family
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
I'd say it's all relative and completely depends on how a tank is setup with them, as well as any species of fish really.
