Planted Aquarium Design. 200 Love HATE What’s up fishtank people? How is everybody doing I hope you are doing well. So today I want to show you how I get after it with the 220. Yes. I have been having a lot of fun in my wifes tank at work. That tank is easy to work on. This bad boy, Not so much. So we are going to start by talking about, what’s been going on in this aquarium. So I have always had a difficult time working on this aquarium. It’s 30 inches tall which means I can’t do the little in and out, arms wet up to my elbows. Digging into this bad boy is a full commitment. I have to take the water WAY DOWN to get the dexterity to do what I want to do. It’s also a much larger foot print. This tanks foot print alone is bigger than both the no maintenance tank and the fluval bow front combined. Yes- I have been giving those tanks much more attention because of it. However, The 220 has something that both those tanks don’t have. The 220 here has a 6 foot viewing area. So today I am going to walk you through how I am approaching this tank both creatively with the aquascape. What I love and what I hate about it. AND what I love and hate about the maintenance. Ok, so the first thing is to get the water out. I use these massive tubes out in the greenhouse which make water removal a snap. The one inch diameter roughly pulls the water out 4x as fast as a regular python. From there we move into just basic clean up. I have intentionally left the quad t5s off on this tank for awhile. Why? Because unknowingly I had the timer on for about 16 hours a day a few days in a row. Think about how you feel when you work for 16 hour days a couple of days in a row? The algae loved this. If you want a big tip to reduce algae it’s this. Only run your lights 6 hours….thats a base line, but start there. But there is another element in play here as well. WATER FLOW. Yep. This sucker has both an fx6 and an fx4 however they outputs were aimed towards the top for better gas exchange. Which is a good thing, but this neglected the lower levels. I am not practicing what I preach with water flow. I don’t have enough flow around my tank. I’ve since added some of these fluval, I think this is a cp3 or 4, what I like about them is that they pull water in from all over the place so if something gets sucked on to them. They don’t stop flowing. They are made for circulation. I couple of things to consider and be concerned about. 1. When draining down the tank this far we want to be extra careful with the filters. We really don’t want our filters to not have any water flowing through them for more than like 20 minutes. So every 20 minutes or so just kick them on really quickly then turn them back off. I like it quiet. When I am working on the tank. It should also be pointed out, we want our heaters unplugged if they are going to be out of the water. And finally- For me- working on this tank is a “Hide the women and the children kind of operation.” Guess what- They aren’t here! ALSO before we start to drain we want to make sure we have our declor handy. Don’t start draining until you do! It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.

Would suck to have to age the water because those barrels are big and bulky but it sure beats the hell out of having to constantly juggle the temperature when refilling the tank
