I have heard that a sudden reduction of nitrates can stress fish and that if they are high then they should be reduced gradually. Is this true?
If you perfectly matched all six parameters could you do a water change of any size and if not what is the highest you would go,,as a general rule?
Would you recommend asking the pet shop to let you test the water in the tank you will get your fish from and match the levels before getting the fish? I know you cannot release them right away in any circumstance because you must equalize temperatures.
Many questions,,I know. :)

For doing water changes for my ADF’s I heard that they’re very sensitive to vibrations, so shall I take them out for the waterchange? Can I just put each one with a cup of water in a smaller tank? Or will they fight

Hi Cory, thank for the information in this video. I really appreciate the tip on how to save money on the water testing strips and how testing the water first should be used as a basis to come up with a water changing plan.

I have two HOB filters in a 10 gallon tank. My HOBs uses two different sponge materials, one for mechanical filtering and another for biological filtering. I also added to pre-stage filters on the intake tube after seeing one of your videos.

How often should the pre-stage filters be cleaned? Also how often should the mechanical sponge filter be cleaned? I planned on cleaning the mechanical and biological filter sponge inside the HOB once a month. Should I clean the mechanical sponge more often within a month?

iits good you mention that it is stressful for the fish also did a water change only about 20 percent, the fish were lame and floating on the surface did the water test and the ph was green at al four squares so they almost died doing a water-change the fish did not like that at all

Cory. Can you please tell me if rainwater tank water ( off the roof ) is safe for fish - given that it will have bird poop in it, and
this would have intestinal worm eggs ( and other things ) ? - or is dechlorinated tap water the better of two evils ?

"one day I'm gonna trip on a pile of scissors...."  LOL thank you for making this video, still new to fishkeeping and only had northern crayfish in the past. Fish always look hungry...I never know how much to feed and it ruins the hobby because all I'm ever doing is clean filters. Frustrating. At least with this gel food the pieces will stay put and not immediately soil the water or get sucked up in filtration.

Hi Cory, May i know if its best to
1) Air about 10 gallons of water overnight for water change for a 55 gallon tank?
2) Add dechlorinator before adding water to the tank straight from the tap?
Also, for a discus tank(5 discus in a 55gallon), is water change 1-2 times week enough? They will be fed about twice a day.
Thanks!!!

I have an Extremely heavy planted aquarium, and my Nitrates and Nitrites are at or near 0 on a constant basis. I have done a partial water change once since I bought the tanks from my son (about 9 months ago), just to see how much of a pain in the butt it would be. However, I keep seeing on most every site, you have to do water changes, water changes, water changes......... What is the point if I have no Nitrogen/Ammonia problems, and the fish seem happy and healthy?
They have a day for everything else, might as well have one for tacos.
Love the test strip tip. I figured the tabs would fall off.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 4 years ago
Well there are lots of parameters we as hobbyists don't test for. Like hormones, copper, zinc, etc. In high levels all can be deadly. In your case, you don't have to worry about the main fish killers which are fish waste. I'd say a water change once a month while servicing filters etc would be enough. Enough water to clean the media etc is all that would probably be needed depending on type of fish etc.

Haha wow the timing, I just got my API master kit today, did a bunch of tests, discovered my tank had about 0.25 ppm Ammonia, 0 nitrites, and over 100ppm nitrates XD I need more plants. only got two small amazon swords and a small banana lily, sadly my sucking loach just died, but now i'm less afraid to get new plants, i'll get something less herbavore this time.
my PH was under 6.0, my tap water is over 8.8, I did a 33% water change today (15 gallon tank) and will be doing another next week, should get this all cleared up nicely, but i'm happy to know my system is eating away at the ammonia and nitrites it produces, sadly i just started a new job and wasnt able to water change it in about a month.

I have three questions for you, if you have the time, and I appreciate it.
1.) What online fish selling service(s) do you suggest?
2.) suggestions for algae eaters? I'm thinking about getting 2 siamese algae eaters.
3.) I have a single corydora, I'd like to give it some friends, but i can't find any others that match it's colors, will it be as happy with any other corydora?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks again if you do answer, and thanks for the videos.

You're more or less the reason i'm in the hobby now, I started with just wanting to take care of the fish my parents had properly, because i hate seeing animals mistreated, they of course did not know they were doing anything wrong.... biggest issues were no plants, and no water changes, and just the other night i was laying in bed looking at a bunch of fish, including greg sage's stuff, and geeking out over all of them. It was then that I realized I'm now a fish nerd XD
So, thanks for that.

How do your results from the strips compare to the liquid? Always heard to not trust the strips, and always had different results. So I'm curious if you test using both to see how accurate they are for you? And do yours test for ammonia?
M. Yates
M. Yates - 4 years ago
Thank you. Yeah, testing takes a long time. I test twice a month for ammonia, nitrite and nitrates on all my tanks. I just wasn't sure how accurate the strips are compared for those. I've heard stories of strips showing no ammonia and liquid tests showing lots. The strips would be so much easier to be able to walk by 18 tanks and dip rather than drip and shake LOL
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 4 years ago
+M. Yates I dont compare the two. There is a different strip for ammonia. The reality is most people dont care whether their pH is 7.2 or 7.3. But the reality is most people wont test 7 wayer parameters a week. And testing them and being slightly different is better than not testing.

Is it stressful for my Bettas and guppies if I do little water changes everyday just to remove there waste. Guppies poop like crazy and I dont have any gravel so I hate seeing waste at the bottom of the tank.
XxXMidnightblackXxX
XxXMidnightblackXxX - 4 years ago
+Oscar Hernandez For me hang on back filters and canister filters for large tanks) work great , not sure what would work for you because I don't know your set up.
Basically any filter that tanks water in without passing through a sponge or other media that will block the waste and then sends the water through a sponge or other media inside the filter before the water goes back into the tank.
Oscar Hernandez
Oscar Hernandez - 4 years ago
Do you know of anything that can do that?
XxXMidnightblackXxX
XxXMidnightblackXxX - 4 years ago
Maybe you should look into getting different filter that traps the fish waste and removes it from site, so that you'll only need to do water changes as part of your normal maintenance, not just to make the tank look nice.

How much nitrate is tolerable? Or at what level of nitrates should I definitely change water?
XxXMidnightblackXxX
XxXMidnightblackXxX - 4 years ago
You should change your water on a regular basis even if your nitrate is not to high, this is beneficial for your fish tank. For most fish species 40ppm and under is safe but it's recommended for your nitrate levels to be at 20ppm or less.
Lucy Mia
Lucy Mia - 4 years ago
kc0dxf 40ppm is the maximum concentration that would not harm the fish. You should change the water whenever the test shows that it's near 40ppm or even 30ppm.

I think you've convinced me to start using the test strips. I've always been one of those elitists who complained they weren't good enough and have always used the liquid tests. But the liquid is a huge PITA and takes a long time to deal with when testing multiple tanks!
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 4 years ago
Its one of those things that was drilled into me (from too much internet research when I re-joined the hobby) so I simply took it as fact without any real life experience. Now I've come to find that I rarely, if ever, actually test my water anymore anyway. I'm unwilling to attempt altering my water to meet some specific parameter, I (you, anyone) should really never see ammonia unless we somehow cause/induce a bacterial crash and similarly should never see nitrite. Nitrate readings can be useful (as you've shown) for gauging water change schedules and for determining how much fertilizer you might need to add to a planted tank. I also like the digital TDS meters as a gauge for water change schedules (although again, not something I typically bother with anymore!)
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 4 years ago
+Rich's Fishes yeah exactlu, when something is a pain in the butt, I tens not to do that. Clearly that is worse than testing with a steip that is in my opinion just as acurate.

+Rico Suave That's why I said to research water quality and compatibility before buying any more fish. Because through doing this research would tell them how important the tank size is.
Anyway, you seem to being have an over reaction in my opinion. All I did was offer some advice to stop them from going out and buying an angel fish or other larger fish that would have much more of a negative affect than something smaller like an apistogramma or other small cichlid.
I've known many people who have tanks like this and will not listen to people being negative and telling them out right to upgrade their tank. They will ignore all the negativity and still go out and get their big fish.
So I opted for a less negative common.
I did not tell them to go out and buy this fish, I just stated that something smaller would be better then something larger and that they should do some research before getting any other fish.

+XxXMidnightblackXxX yes you are telling him indirectly just cause you mention that an apisto can be mixed in will make him think it will be ok when getting a bigger tank should be the first option

+Rico Suave I was not telling them to go out and get one, I was just saying it's an better option than going for something like a angel fish. Some people will not listen when you tell them their tank is over stocked, so I was opting for a smaller fish if they are still going to get another fish anyway.
I live in Australia as well, apistogrammas are not that expensive here, average $20-40, which is not that different to an angel fish of $7-30 for tiny ones and $17-50 for larger ones.

+XxXMidnightblackXxX are you crazy its already packed with fish and adding more fish on top of that is just adding fuel to the fire....even then apistos are fincky and want certain waters to thrive...plus i doubt he is gettin apistos in Australia the cost might be another tank

It's not a good idea to go for bigger in the size tank with the current stock you have.
I think something like an apistogramma cichlid would be an more appropriately size for you stock level, also many of them are colourful. Just check your water quality/compatibility before getting any more fish.

nothing sounds like your maxed out unless you get a bigger tank maybe a 400 liter tank
