I don’t think anyone can convince me to buy wild caught when there is a captive bread fish. Not because of the ethical issues but for the health of the fish.

Wild caught fish are a complicated issue. There are bad practices like blast fishing and cyanide. Good fishing practices should be congratulated. I think the Saltwater trade gets more flack, since it is mostly WC fish, over freshwater, but both have good and bad examples of WC fish.
I actually did a video about Lake Victoria and the Nile Perch, since I keep some Victoria cichlids. From what I found It was more of an colonial attitude European's had where they wanted a fishery the locals didn't need.

Thanks for putting that podcast that I listened to today in context. Like the guy who paid 350.000 dollars to shoot a Rhino that the South African Game authorities said was killing other Rhinos. Would it have been better if those authorities killed it for nothing? That is simply illogical. Peoples unchecked emotions can seriously economically damage the third world. The definition of indifference. Don't allow the sustainable harvest of African game, and their extinction will accelerate. Because corn will pay them more than the animals can. Jees how hard is that to understand. Strictly looking at other people around the world from one's own emotional perspective is ignorant.

One of the things about getting wild caught fish is that we can keep endangered fish around and not totally lose them. And if an environment is temp. lost and then comes back then we have a captive group of fish all over the place to restock the wild with. There are a couple top minnows I would love to get but they are endangered and I am not allowed to have them which I think stinks to just cut everyone off but gov. I think there should be a way to get a certain amount of them every year or two to sell to people that want to breed them and raise them. Then we have a population that can have two uses. One is to repopulate the wild and the other is to sell to others and not have to touch the wild population in time. I know that there are some fish that we have in captive populations that are no longer found in the wild and NOT just due to being over harvested but environmental things wiped them out. Some of these fish we have because they have been bred in captive populations for years. And some we have a low wild population because of something bad going on in the environment but also have a decent captive population cause some were brought into the captive population and sold and raise. I think this is MUCH better than totally cutting people off from them completely.

So your argument is that if we stop collecting fish from the wild, all those people who previously do it will then automatically move on to more harmful industries? Do you have a study to back this up, or is this your hypothesis that also conveniently defends your purchases of wild caught fish?

Im from minnesota where i grew up catching wild fish and eating them right from the lake at our cabin. mostly walleye and perch. We even catch our own minnows sometimes. I bring this up because i come from a tradition where we would basicly hunt and eat wild fish. but thats what wild fish are for FOOD. So i view wild caught fish in aquariums as a way to preserve a fish species natural colorations and a form of domestication. PPl forget everyone has different views on whats appropriate in our hobby as fishkeepers. I was Catching, killing, skinning and eating wild fish long before i kept them. So keeping them in a tank that is set up to keep them healthy and alive is a good alternative for that fish in my oppinion.

yeah but... we talking about cardinal tetras and tiny fish, who the hell would go to the river and fish cardinals to eat? like... cardinal soup? the problem goes beyong what are you going to do with the fish, is the amount of fish taken. You have a river, okey, you fish, okey, you et, dunno, 100 fish a year, okey np. But what happen when there are 45 thousand hands taking fish from the same river? the fish go poof And then there is no more fish for anybody.

Morally IMO it’s no different than catching lions or elephants in the wild and putting them in zoo’s As far as proving employment that doesn’t wash with me. Does poaching elephant tusks accomplish the same employment thing? It helps sustain a species by breeding programs, we wouldn’t need to if responsible governments took care of their resources, so it needs to be addressed at that level.
I’m glad the only fish I have bought so far were bred internally. I make a point of asking. Though I haven’t bought a lot I always ask. There’s a guy on you tube, he caught a small mouth bass with a hook and sinker, and put it in his tank at home. The thing is all by itself. I mean really
I’m not trying to start a moral debate, just my take on it, and I like my position and feel good about it
Ian Pugh
Ian Pugh - 6 years ago
Here is the difference.
1) Lions (and most mammals) don't reproduce in clutches of hundreds like many fish species do, so taking one out of the wild has a much greater effect than taking even thousands of Cardinal Tetras from the flooded forests near the Rio Negro.

2) I can't think of any hobby fish that is caught with a hook. Going back to the Cardinal Tetras, they are collected from puddles that would otherwise dry up, and every fish would be dead. Is is ok to let all of those fish die when we can give them a chance at a significantly longer life?

3) The aquarium hobby has saved a good few species from extinction. The Zebra Pleco is one. I highly recommend reading on it.

4) Finally, from a perspective of a Environmental Scientist, and animal will almost always live a better life in captivity than in the wild, when appropriately kept (I say this because someone will bring up Sea World). "The Life of Pi" says this much better than I can.

"“Well-meaning but misinformed people think animals in the wild are “happy” because they are “free”. These people usually have a large, handsome predator in mind…The life of the wild animal is simple, noble and meaningful, they imagine. Then it is captured by wicked men and thrown into tiny jails. Its “happiness” is dashed. It yearns mightily for “freedom” and does all it can to escape. Being denied its “freedom” for too long, the animal becomes a shadow of itself, its spirit broken. So some people imagine.
This is not the way it is.

Animals in the wild lead lives of compulsion and necessity within an unforgiving social hierarchy in an environment where the supply of fear is high and the supply of food is low and where territory must constantly be defended and parasites forever endured..."

I'm glad you addressed this topic and I intend to look up the organization you suggested to become more educated. Right now, admittedly without researching, my thought is that many species which exist in the wild today will only exist in the aquarium hobby in the near future - where that it true, hobbyists are actually conservationists. I think loss of habitat is much more of a threat to wild populations than overcollecting. While industrialized nations have the option and responsibility of conserving their own native wildlife, many of the places in the world where fish are collected are 'subsistence' communities without the opportunity to choose among hundreds of options of how to survive. Guiding collection tours and collecting for sale are valid industries in those areas. Just my 2 cents.

@Northie - Exactly!
Northie
Northie - 6 years ago
Also let's not forget that industrialized nations are already in "been there, done that" situation. It's easy to call out to developing countries demanding preservation when your quality of life is already ensured. Usually as a result of habitat loss. I use Eurasian wolves and forests as an example. Both have already bowed to industrialization - there aren't really that many pieces of old forests left here. Eurasian wolf has been hunted to extinction in many places (though they are recovering).

What right do we have to demand African and South American countries to stop the heavy industrialization when we have already done so ourselves.

You bring up valid points Cory, habitat destruction and pollution of waterways in various ways from excess nitrogens, pesticides or herbicides to chemical wastes ect... is causing far more damage than the collection of species. The habitat destruction translates to less fish then coupled with unregulated harvesting that can cause the endemic populations of species to dwindle. I agree with a regulated method that is enforced and to teach collection agents to use sustainable practices is the better option. You as an aquatic business owner know that consumers want the cheapest price possible and many species are not commercially bred at all or they are not bred in high enough numbers to keep the prices as low as we have come to expect. I have been passionate about aquatics and nature preservation in general basically since I was a child and I understand why some people are so adamant about this issue but they often don't truly know all the facts and repercussions of certain actions. They say as you said NO WILD caught but as you stated the people of these regions of the world still must feed and clothe their family and will be forced to find other ways to do that that can be even more harmful to the habitat. Good Points On A Serious Subject.

No doubt having industry that requires the natural resources to stay healthy, will promote the natural resources. Just look at what Weyerhaeuser has done for the Timber industry and preserving the forest. Personally I like captive raised fish because I think they are easier to care for. For example, good luck getting Oto Cats to eat store bought food. We just need to be responsible, not overfish, and take good care of the fish after we have caught them. Also it is important to build a good community of fish keepers to promote best practices, and help the newbies not kill fish.

Using the fish to create jobs is way wrong I think. It must hurt the fish natural survival wich is much more important. The could license the import and Only have few people That import wild fish and then breed them to sell. Small Numbers of wild fish. And fish That wont breed in our aquariums should stay in the wild. Good topic and great channel. Love That a guy selling fish for a living dares talk about this subject. Shows a big commitement Even if I dont agree on this Wild fish matter ;)

Might want to revisit this subject when you can do more than a 3 minute segment. You hit some relevant points, but the lack of depth makes this feel more like "preaching to the choir" than explaining (or convincing) much. I'm glad you're willing to touch on this subject though. As with many other areas of interest, including keeping of other animal types, a lot of people don't really think about where supply starts at.

Back in the 90's if you even whispered wild caught on reef central they would lambaste you, they had visions of guys in dive suites with syringes floating around coral heads stunning fish to be caught for the trade. Those fish would stay emaciated and eventually die in the aquarium. This is also where I believe the UL rating argument started, there is a company today who's early offerings where not UL rated and if you even mentioned the name it would burn the forum down. I think those new to the hobby have just parroted things they've heard without knowing the whole deal. A lot has changed for the better in both cases.

Sustainability is the key word here. If economic dependency means that people become educated and interested about what's in their local water and that leads to conservation then maybe sacrificing 2-3% is the reluctant price to pay to protect the other 97/98%.

That said, I dislike the thought of any animal suffering for human vanity, which is why your 'Wild Fish Unboxing' video didn't sit well with me.

I don't see anything wrong with wild caught fish as long as it is done responsibly. If the species is thriving in the wild, the caught fish are transported and cared for responsibly, and jobs are created in the process then there is nothing wrong with it.
I do think breeding the fish in captivity is a goal. Some wild caught fish don't do well in tanks, while their tank raised counterparts thrive.
I had wild rummey nose tetras that died after a week. They were afraid of me and wouldn't eat, and the water was just different enough from their natural habitat that it causes them to suffer.
My tank raised rummey nose on the other hand were active and healthy and eating after the first day. They swim to the top when I approach the tank, and they will even follow my hand.
If a fish can be tank raised, it is better for the fish and for people in the long run. But first, they need to come from the wild in a safe respectful way.
It's the same as harvesting trees. Either you can destroy whole forests, or you can select cut the trees and plant more and make the forest stronger.

100. comment for WILD CAUGHT AQUARIUM FISH. GOOD OR BAD?

you are absolutely right. more us need to adopt a species and learn how to care and breed for them before they're gone do habitat distruction or climate change. IMHO that's the only way some species will survive.

If those wild caugh species were to end with informed ppl, fish ppl, then yeah sure. That's not reality. Those same neon tetras i see in the store that came from a river somewere are going to go to any human that wants them, and they will die or not depending if they were lucky enough to get an owner that knows about fish.

So, fair to say that you're fine with trophy hunting bull elephants? I agree with how you've laid this out. Finding ways to monetize conservation has been the hallmark of the North American model of conservation, which in general works well. Yes, we have things like preserves, large national parks, and other protected areas, but almost any conservation, on a private land scale, is based on the sale of sporting goods. I see no issue with conservation tourism, and sustainable harvest as incentives for other populations to make sure those resources remain intact, but the absence of regulating bodies in many of the south American or African nations can be... problematic.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't approach, in my opinion. Until we are willing, as an international community, to preserve biodiversity through habitat preservation and restoration WHERE IT DOESNT MAKE FISCAL SENSE, we're going to need to find novel ways of incentivizing local communities to make sure they don't over harvest. I admit I don't know enough about the aquarium trade on a supplier basis to say what is best (and I trust that you, Corey, are far more educated about it), but I have to presume that paying for wild fish is worth it.

What scares me, however, is when the habitat IS getting endangered, and the resource IS becoming scarce. Suddenly, when those Cardinal tetras are getting rare, what happens? The price goes up, presumably. People in the trade hear there's a scarcity, which often drives up demand. More people try to find the fish, because of the lucrative nature of selling a fish going extinct. We need to get ahead of this through habitat preservation, but the mechanism for doing that work is often... hard to track down.

Good video, thanks for sharing your opinions.

I recognize they may seem disjointed, but they're very closely related when considering broader conservation goals. Although I regret that my opening salvo was in regard to bull elephant hunting, there is a strong argument (at least in my opinion) for trophy hunting that is very similar to Corey's argument FOR wild caught fish. Bull elephant hunting is, right now, a hotly contested topic in the US and broader international dialogue. From a conservation standpoint, sanctioned trophy hunts go a long way in providing necessary funding and income sources to local populations to incentivize keeping elephants around. There are preserves in Africa that permit bull elephant hunts, which tends not to impact broader populations, or impact the depth of the gene pool, as targeted bulls tend to be older, and have undoubtedly had opportunity to contribute their genes towards the larger herd. These hunts bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to places that often have few other industries in the area. Although unpalatable to a large group of the population, if regulated well, it keeps elephants around by ensuring local populations receive money, dependably, for their robust elephant populations.

It isn't hard to connect the lines in my argument. Hunting elephants is unpalatable to many, but has a direct and positive impact on broader conservation goals for species and habitat conservation, when performed properly in line with population projections. Collecting wild caught fish for the aquarium trade incentivizes local populations to keep these fish around, provided it is performed in line with population trends. If your family makes its living off a fish it collects, to sell, it's more likely you'll oppose efforts to damage the sustainability of your enterprise. Replace "fish" with "bull elephants" and the argument is the same.

Since when did Cory mention anything about trophy hunting Bull Elephants? Thats a completely unrelated topic...
As for cardinal tetras, it depends on the place you purchase them from. CB cardinals range from cheap to expensive, like a lot of fish. It just depends on where you choose to buy them.

It's a natural resource and the program to replace and or replenish the resource has to be equal or bigger than what you are taking. Right now I'm not convinced there are proper measures in place for replenishment, monitoring, or protection. The area's that most of these fish are collected are notorious for corruption. If we have it here and are breeding it here I feel there is no need to take more.
Bárbara R
Bárbara R - 6 years ago
we are humans the gods of inbreeding species lol. Besides, we have thousands of fish everywere, the genetic pool is big enough, the real problem is lazy ppl that don't want to waste time and effort in breeding the fish when they can just pay some miserable coin to someone else so they catch them and bag them. Is free money. That's why they do it.
boabab95
boabab95 - 6 years ago
Inbreeding would also be much less of a problem -but not totally avoidable- if they were bred more strategically, instead of en masse in heavily stocked ponds (not that I'm against that) or based on whether it's "pretty" or not. THAT is why there is such a big inbreeding problem with some species; not because there isn't a big enough gene pool, but because they aren't bred for genetic variability.

Now with that said, I'm not against wild caught (as long as it's done humanely, responsibly, and sustainably) as it does help preserve the forests. Given enough generations, you're also going to need to introduce new bloodlines into captive populations, but it won't be in the sheer number exported currently.
NYGOLD
NYGOLD - 6 years ago
That's if there is only one breeder in the entire country.  If you were breeding just say Angelfish you wouldn't have to get wild fish for better genes you would just need to find another breeder, trade stock or buy some.
envoirment
envoirment - 6 years ago
There is one problem with that - and that's inbreeding. Generally speaking, you'll need to bring in wild caught specimens to breed and "replenish" the gene pool of fish that are extensively and rigorously bred. So you will need to take more from time to time, but a lot less than originally needed to set up a big enough breeding population for the hobby.

Things are rarely black and white so I am only 60% against :)
Next topic my vote is, genetically modified fish like glow fish.
Also when you get your bagged fish do you "pop & drop" or slowly aclimatize temp and ph? Some say there will be amonia in the bag so get em out quick and don't stress em more.

Cory can you do something on best fish for open top tanks. I find the LFS, certainly in the UK and the ‘Internet’, is far from helpful. With Aquascaping more people are using open to tanks. It makes it harder if you want a community tank. Every thing on plants but nothing on fish.

we tend to think that's a waste, and is hard, but is not really a waste. Nature is very wise. That dead puddle fish could be food for other animals, that dead puddle fish could be the only natural predator of the specie and the only thing keeping the balance in that ecosistem. I know is hard to understand, but truly, in nature (unlike us) everything has a propose.
