Weekly Sunday maintenance on my discus planted tank.

This is the maintenance that I do on my 450L discus planted tank every weekend. Some trimming, glass cleaning and 30% water change. I make another 30% water change in the middle of week without trimming or cleaning the glass. Filtration maintenance is separate matter. I will make videos of that in the future. Please, stay tuned and thanks for watching.

I have been keeping discus now for some months in tap water in a 300L tank and they do just fine without having to do all this testing and messing about. I do one weekly water change of 50% and they are nice and happy.

Yes, I know. If i decided to keep discus again i would avoid planted tank and focus on fish. I would not use RO either.

TroyGaming hi. yes. i dont test my water obviously everytime i do waterchange. it is always the same lol. it is just to show how RO works. i have been using RO in my planted tanks simply because it is better for plants and fish.

How to keep discuss in planted tank like your one, suppose i use lil bit of fertilizer in basement and than some sand , and to keep this i need to change water 30-40% every week to maintain nitrate but how do i use heater in planted tank? I think plant ll die becoz of heater, but also discuss need it, plz what to do tell me sir in details
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 7 years ago
Amit Das i used fluorite, eco complete substrates in planted areas, sand in the middle. two 300w heaters with temp 30 degrees celsius. you can change as much water as works for you. i was changing from 30 to 50% twice a week. i never had problems with nitrates due to plants and good quality biomedia. i was injecting co2 and used liquid fertilizers as well as root tabs every 3 months or so.

What RO tap mixture ratio do you do?

My water here in London is hard as, I've been doing 50/50
J Dot Tee

Pavol Kulanda hence the 50/50
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
+J Dot Tee well that is pretty bad then.
J Dot Tee
J Dot Tee - 8 years ago
Pavol Kulanda well I always wanted to keep discus so I started off with tap water but slowly introduced this ro mix to get softer water coz that's what Maidenhead aquatics advised me... slowly got my fish acclimated to that water and temp.... not really bothered with breeding tbh. Tap water where I am has a PH of above 8. Nitrates in the 30-40ppm.
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
It is not really important unless you want to breed. First discus I bought from LFS and they told to use RO if possible to make water softer for them. I found out from several breeders that is not necessary as long as you keep your pH stable. I had my RO unit so I just kept doing what I was doing. If you really want to keep them in perfect water keep using RO but it is not a must. You should measure TDS and achieve 80-100 ppm with your mix. Then you know your pH is going to be fine.
J Dot Tee
J Dot Tee - 8 years ago
Pavol Kulanda I went there last night n picked up my two. They aren't settling in great. I need to re home some other fish. Am in Hertfordshire. Is just a lot easier I suppose keeping it 50:50

60/40 mate. if you keep chens fish you should be fine with only tap water because they raise them in London tap water.

only 30-% a week, in my 100g discus tank with plants, i have to do 80% about every 3 days otherwise my nitrates get too high.. i bet you must have pretty high nitrates to be doing 30% water changes like you would with small fish.  I have wayy more plants then you do, i dont use sand i use floramax substrate..  And i dont bother with RO.  i just swap out 80% with tap water using prime and our tap water has 7.8 ph. of course after like 4 hours my ph naturally goes back down to about 7.2.Sometimes i feel like people do too much for discus, they arent hard to take care of.  Just keep the nitrates low and your fine.  I also keep my temps are 80f, 82-86 is too high imo a nd i havent had issues
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
+Pavol Kulanda and dont worry about them dying. they can tolerate more than people think. they will show you when they are not happy.
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
+Joseph Karthic you will be fine with 6 discus in your tank and filtration you are planning. bare bottom tanks are easy to keep clean. you will have to do more frequent waterchanges without plants and to remove the waste and uneaten food. discus are high maintenance. slight rise of nitrates can be tolerated. you can test your water more often at the start to find out how it rises and then you will know how often you and how much you need to change. if you don't want change water every time you remove waste you should invest in some vacuum cleaner. wipe your tank glass regularly during waterchange and you will be fine. make sure you get a good quality healthy stock from reputable breeder. do not mix discus from diferrent sources without QT to avoid xcontamination. good luck.
Joseph Karthic

what happens if nitrates is rising? do discus fish die even for small amount of nitrates? I love to keep 6 discus in my 4 feet 65 gallon tank..But everyone says its very high maintenance fish..is tht so? im planning for a canister filter rated 2800 litre/hr..but no plants..bare bottom tank.weekly 25% water change..feeding NLS thera forumula...will i be good ?
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
actually my nitrates were nearly zero wether you believe or not. it was 30% twice a week at that point. I was changing 50 % twice a week later when I had more discus and bigger discus. once I came back fron two weeks holuday and no nitrates. I guess my filtration and plants were doing their job well. what works for one setup does not need to work in another setup.

Perhaps i am missing something. We do water changes to remove nitrates and keep the water healthy. why do you use tap water? conditioned or not but its still nasty with high dissolved solids.
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
I used tap water to remineralize RO water. Fish need minerals to live. Everybody's tap water is different. Mine is fine when it comes to nitrates and other toxins. Chlorine and chloramines and some nasty metals are removed by cobditioner so I don't see the problem. Some well known breeders raise their discus in tap water only.

I know. I never really measured pH 3 times every WC. Only in this video. Obviously it was the same all the time. Amount of wc were increasing to keep discus healthy. I stunted a few on the way. I still have this tank as low tech with no discus. I sold them due to lack of time but I will definitely keep them again. Is there anything more boring in life than watching someone change aquarium water, clean the glass, and test pH? Not to mention compulsive trimming in an area of the tank in which some taller background plants would be quite appropriate. +Pavol Kulanda ok sweet! Thanks for the reply helped a lot
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
+Matts Aquascapes It all depends on your setup. Planted or bare bottom? Any other fish companions, filtration. If you want fully planted scaped tank, I would suggest only 6 adult discus with few corries, and little group of tetras. Anything more would be complicated to maintain and keep algea away. You would be feeding a lot of fatty, meaty foods. If you go bare bottom you could put more discus in but your water change schedule would have to be adjusted accordingly and good filtration turnover is the key. You should aim for 10 times water turnover of water volume per hour. I hope that helped.

yes all plants you mentioned do great. I would also recommend crypts, valisneria, aponogeton species and dwarf sag or echinodorus tenellus for carpet. All these plant are very easy to maintain and do well in higher temps. They dont require high light or co2 but would grow more lush and faster with co2 which is always plus in discus tank. There are plenty of stem plants to choose from but they require more maintenance which is not ideal. Ludwigia, pogostemon and some hygrophila species do great but really need higher light and co2.

You have an amazing looking tank. Obviously a lot of hard work went into it along with all the maintenance but it has paid off and you should be proud. IMO your tank set up is one of the best on youtube. It is making me think about getting back into the hobby - I haven't kept tropical fishes in over 20 years but seeing videos of such great looking aquariums is very inspiring.
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
Thank you sir. I really miss this set up. I managed to keep it for 1 year. I had to rescape after mainly due to different health issues of my discus. I made easier to maintain with new scape called Discus Tree but I still wasn't happy so I took main centerpiece out. At the moment I am gradually replacing all stem plants with easy to maintain crypts, swords and jungle vallis from my another tank. Lots of trimming and replanting stresses discus out. I will post update as soon as everything is completed and settled. you are more than welcome to check out progress and changes on this tank on my channel. I hope you will stay inspired and get back to it soon.

Testing the PH of RO water is pretty pointless. Carbonate Hardness is zero, therefore PH would change dramatically for any reason (more or less CO2 or O in the water or little amount of acid substances).

sure it is. testing on this video was done only for demonstration for people who are not familiar with RO and how it can lower pH.

+Johnny G Background plants from left to right are: Pogostemon Stellatus, Ludwigia Repens rubin, Limnophila Aromatica, Cryptocoryne Wendtii brown (in sand in the centre), Pogostemon Stellatus, Valisneria spiralis (straight variety) at both sides panels going gradually to dwarf Sagittaria Subulata in foreground. Midground plants are: Cryptocoryne Wendtii brown, couple stems of Starogyne repens and Anubias nana with Microsorium "Java fern" narrow leaf growing on woodwork.
Fish stock: 6 assorted discus, 9 corydoras (sterbai, julii, bronze), 3 panda garra, 10 rummynose tetra, 6 bleeding heart tetra, 1 bristlenose pleco, there were also some ottocinclus catfish and pair of apistogramma nijseni with Kribensis dwarf cichlids at that time.

I'm tempted by a single Severum Cichlid, they get big but they are slow and peaceful
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
+Lord Twaddle discus are shoaling fish. you would need minimum of 6 or more. I always thought that dollars grow big are greedy eaters. angels tend to be fast and more agressive during feeding which is not good with discus but people keep them together and it can work.
Lord Twaddle
Lord Twaddle - 8 years ago
None of the fish I own are larger than discus and silver dollars are already easy to scare so that's not thmuch issue. The issue is tank size and care
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 8 years ago
+Lord Twaddle They are pretty shy fish. They spook easily and are intimidated by larger fish. You may reconsider your stock.

It's not that hard. I only tested ph on this video to show viewers how it works. I don't test my ph every water change. I do it maybe once a month. cleaning is different matter especially in planted tanks. I have simplyfied layout since then to make it easier.

+Pavol Kulanda Do you put any additives into the RO water?
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 9 years ago
60 RO : 40 tap works for me. I aim for TDS 80ppm. I never purchased any pump so I simply set buckets on top of the tank and siphon water out. I do not mix water. I pour it in the tank seperately and let it mix in the tank. Once I get bigger water storage I will pump it back in the tank.

Great video, even nicer fish, question if you have time to respond, once u mix the Ro and tap water, does the ph change from the original 6.5 to let say 7, and then go down in the aquarium, or do you add anything alse to bring it back to 6.5? also what is your kh after mixing Ro and Tap, thank you and keep the videos coming.
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 9 years ago
+qazwsx66680 Thank you for watching. I rarely measure RO/Tap water mix. I simply put RO water and tap water back into tank separately and let them mix in the tank. I do not add any chemicals to lower pH. It just stay at 6.5 itself. My KH is 6 and GH is 4. I don`t have liquid drop tests for them at the moment. I only used test strip so it might not be very accurate. I hope that helps.

"Experts" keep telling me I can easily keep discus in my hard tapwater, with a high conductivity and high pH : as long as these parameters are kept at a constant and same level, the fish will adapt. As a result : You will be able to lower your maintainance cost and effort. You have a really beautiful setup, and never-the-less, a lot of respect for your efforts in creating a natural water-environnement.
TheBSideDJ
TheBSideDJ - 9 years ago
+Pavol Kulanda : I totally understand your point. I really like amazone biotope and keep South american cichlids, L-numbers, cory's and geophagus on tap water with a high pH and high Ca-concentration, and it works well. I sometimes used osmose water in the past, but because of lack of time, I decided to always use tapwater to keep my waterparameters more stabile. (I have hard wood-scapes without plants)
Pavol Kulanda
Pavol Kulanda - 9 years ago
+TheBSideDJ Thanks for watching. Yes most discus nowadays should adapt or are raised in tap water with higher pH. When I bought my first discus shop owner told me pH 6.5 would be ideal but anything up to 7.5 would be o.k as long as it is stable. He said if I can make it softer for them I will have less trouble keeping them healthy in long run. I decided to go that extra effort. I found it easier to control water chemistry and also algea in planted tanks using RO water. I am lucky that water is free where I live..

It was easy to look after but I was running high light CO2 tanks in the past so for me it was quite boring. That is why I upgraded. Your HMA unit is fine. It probably run faster than RODI so you dont need to mix with tap as much. Yes you may need to use root tabs especially in low tech tanks is a good and cheap option. Crypts, amazon swords, jungle val, all the most common low tech plants are mainly root feeders. You can also use some Tetra complete substrate or more expensive Tropica plant growth substrate as the first thin layer for long term nutrients. But it can get costly depending on size of your tank. I did not use any ferts or liquid carbon on my low tech setup and it was doing fine.

Great. Thank you for replying so quickly. It is much appreciated. I was planning a low tech tank using caribsea eco complete on the bottom of the tank, then topped with black sand, forgot what the name of the sand is but it works great as a bulking agent thus saving on the amount of ECO needed, then dose with Neutro T & Neutro CO2. I dont use RODI water but i use a HMA RO unit which extracts sediment, rust, chlorine, lead etc. but leaves the essential minerals needed without having to re-mineralize the RO water. It does not take out all the contaminants but the water here in Scotland is very good. Before running the water through the unit i tested the water. 6.7 PH, 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites & 0 Nitrates. Do you think that i may need to use root tabs according to the type of plants i will be planting? Thanks for any input you can give me bruv as i am not an expert with the planted tank. Cheers.

+Watch it There is 2 bags of red seachem fluorite on the bottom, 2 bags of caribsea eco-complete sand type in the middle and everything is capped by 25kg black basalt natural gravel with1-3mm grain size. And 8kg of natural sand in the centre of tank which I bought in local "Pets at home" chain. I do inject pressurized CO2 during photo period at roughly 3 bubbles per second rate through bazooka atomizer which is sitting under one of my canister inlets. This way CO2 is sucket up in the filter and 100% dissolved in the water when it comes out of outlet spray bar. I also use circulation pump which is sitting near filter outlet to help with CO2 distribution around the tank. I used to use filter inline atomizer but there were these micro bubbles everywhere around the tank which was little bit distracting. When it comes to fertilizers, I am still playing with that. I tried EI method but I had to trim a lot. I use premixed salts NPK and micro nutrients in one bag but I cut the dosing down by half. It is called "High green" for high tech tanks with CO2 from company called Freshwater shrimp in London. So at the moment I am dosing 20ml a day and occasionally some root tabs.
