So I have a question. I have a 5 gallon tank with one Betta. I use travertine tiles as the substrate. Would it be okay if I have two cory catfish?

Man, this is cool, but bettas should have at least a five gallon tank to explore around in. Plus...I hear that cories need at least a ten gallon. So a ten to fifteen gallon tank set up would probably improve the environment for the fish.

You need to have at least five Cory catfish and sand at the bottom no gravel...Plus they(cory catfish) should be in a 10 gallon tank that is not a high one. You want more bottom space because they are bottom dwellers

VERYCRUNCHY TACO , No Plecos get very large, everyone thinks they stay small, but that's a common misconception. The Guppies and the Cories would be 100% perfect together in a 10 gallon.

Kumquat is correct with exceptions. The more cory you have, the happier they are. Never keep one by himself, he wont flourish and you will see a huge improvement in activeness in bigger groups. My Betta LOVES his Cory and they even school together! When I took my betta out of a 10g with 7 cory (using 10g for community/sorority now) he looked depressed. I added 3 cory to his 3 gallon and they are all very, very happy.

how many corys do you have, and how many types? Im sorry, but they need 6+ of their own species and should have a 20gal+ tank, 15 at the minimal.

they do well with betta pellets, so that should fulfill them

I'm not trying to be nit picky, but it's true

bettas do best at 80°f, and both types of corys you have need a bit lower temps

gravel may actually harm them too

It depends on what kind of cory and how many. Cory are active but they are primarily bottom dwellers so they usually have this space to themselves. They also stick closely together and take up even less room because of that. I say for a very small school of small cory, 5g is ok.

MonsterCrue
MonsterCrue - 8 years ago
+Nikita Soorjun I actually plan on putting a cory with my betta because he sometimes misses his food. Ill give him about 3-4 pellets and notice he missed 1 or 2 every time. So if your betta is a bit faster than mine, I would say just drop 5 at once and some will float down.

Rhianna Kruse your right, a 10 to 20 long is ideal, they are schooling fish, so groups of 3 or less could put stress on them. Schooling them should be a problem as there are many types that are very affordable.

Ayla Syck

+Chelsea Samantha yes but Cory catfish will most likely be stressed with only one if u want Cory cats for your 2.5 gallon, you should consider 2 cause their grouping fish :-) so that should help with their overall health
Stolid Liquid
Stolid Liquid - 8 years ago
that is way too small of a tank, something like that should only be used for 1 small fish. and fish are social, maybe you should consider a 5-10 gallon tank for what you are suggesting you want in your tank. also the other person is right the corydora like to be in groups and you will see the most activity from them when you have 4 in a tank(keep in mind when they are full grown at 2-3 inches a 10 gallon would be too small for more than 3)
CeceG

Yes that can work. At first, the Betta might explore who the other fish is and might try to chase them a few times but Betta can never catch up to a Cory catfish trust me.. They're fast! Then eventually the Betta will stop chasing them. Hehe good luck!
Danny Kirchofer
Danny Kirchofer - 9 years ago
There are always those people who comment on the tank size or the fish in with the Betta, in the wild they can live in the footprint of an elephant that has water in it, so there is really no size requirement
MaxamillionGrey
MaxamillionGrey - 7 years ago
Betas only live in small puddles and such when dry seasons come. Water sources evaporate and get smaller leaving the betas in tiny bodies of water. They can live in small aquariums, but it's better to have them in something a little bit bigger.

Actually, lots of species of Cory only grow to be 1-2.5" full grown... such as my Pandas - which only grow to be about 55mm full grown. It varies GREATLY from one species to another and females are larger than males.

+Shinku The Undead actually Corys get 4 inches minimum and they need a 10 gallon by the time they reach their adult form otherwise they will die faster. Bettas are better in a 5 but this seems to be a young betta so its ok just as long as this guy is going to upgrade to a bigger tank within 6 months there is no problem and this Andrew andserson. why dont you shut up you little 8 year old. Btw i love your profile pic its almost as immature and gay as you now stop swearing, just because mommy and daddy dont catch you swearing doesnt mean its ok to swear online and the funny thing is these guys are doing nothing but giving the right information its not like they said the tank sucks or anything we are just saying that a upgrade is urgent id use a 2.5 gallon for fry or eggs tbh lol a 2.5 is just too little but for young fish then its ok but we are just informing that a bigger tank is urgent because AS SOON as that betta grows and its in a 2.5 gallon tank well the catfish can kiss its life goodbye because Bettas are fisty little fish and they arent afraid to fight and Corys dont fight so its helpless so calm down please and understand what we are saying.

Oh okay thanks. And sorry I was not specific I was talking about the corys. How many would you recommend of those?
wpinoyfcw
wpinoyfcw - 10 years ago
Are you talking about Cory Catfish or the Beta? If the Cory, then it probably shouldn't be alone because it's a schooling type of fish and loves to be with more of its kind =) if you have more than 1 of the cory, they tend to stick together and stay at the bottom. and if it's a beta you're talking about then please don't put another male beta with it. It likes to either be alone or with few females usually in a bigger tank =)
