This raises a great question. What fish can you keep in an outdoor pond (no heating) other than the usual suspects like koi, goldfish, guppies, mollies etc. Now there's a species Sunday.

Nice. Temperatures aside, this is how discus live in the wild. They don't live in insanely brightly lit tanks, crystal clear water with a lawn of managed fiddly plants. They never look happy and always look terrified.  Also looked like something dark attached to the fish at the end of the clip... maybe it was just his color.

Cmon discus ain't that sensitive. If you manage to keep your cardinal tetras alive, you can keep discus. Discus only wants to hide if your discus are new or no dither fish or you have too few. They are smart, and once they adapted to you and get to know you, they'll be so showy and will always follow you once you are in the room.

I don't see any updside to putting discus in a pond.  You can't see them, they can fall prey to various insects and animals.  I lost gofdfish and ploaties fish from blue herrons, dragon fly larvae, leeches and a mink.  I hope this does not happen to yours.  The pond will not appreciably accelerate their growth, but be a nice vacation, albeit a risky one.

bro, do you think Angelfish could survive in a pond as well?? Also, if fish breed in a  pond, how do the babies survive, what do they eat?
joesaysso
joesaysso - 9 years ago
Definite fin damage on the one. Maybe it was there beforehand. This is cool in concept but it defeats the purpose of having discus in my view. Why pay money for discus if you can't see them? On the other hand, it took some serious stones to do this. I hope it works out for all involved.

this should shatter all people who are like "discus need bare bottom and a water change everyday"
TheBSideDJ
TheBSideDJ - 7 years ago
wayne : discus from this size don't need a bare bottom tank anymore so no breeders with bare bottom thanks are not shatters by this, this pond has maybe enough waterchanges or don't need much waterchanges with the quantity of plants so no discus breeders are not shatters with this, and yes the fish in close-up shows gillplate problems, so i have to agree with anh le..
Wayne's Fish World
Wayne's Fish World - 8 years ago
hold on there buddy, i gotta take up for dustin and steve in this one, this pond is bigger then the 55 they are currently houses in, so how is it terrible, nature isn't spotless, it has dirt leaves, sticks etc.  and now they live in a 55 gallon.....and grew
anh le
anh le - 8 years ago
+Wayne's Fish World If your purpose is to simply have them living in a terrible environment and not growing out properly, then sure this pond probably worked. You can put a gold fish in a 5G tank and they will survive, too. But is that something you should do? No. The discus showed in the video are stunted with gill plates problems and damaged fins. I personally feel bad for them.

No different in Florida. I don't know of any place locally or online where they're priced "cheap"; nevertheless, I'm a long, long way from actually enjoying my an all Discus species tank.  I'm still happy with my 29L overstocked community aquarium.  After only 5 months in this hobby, I feel I've accomplished so much!
lumpy1space2princess
lumpy1space2princess - 9 years ago
+wyzemann theyre very expensive though, in california they cost 70$.
Mason Dodd
Mason Dodd - 9 years ago
They're only somewhat easy to care for when of a decent size. Anything under four inches is going to need regular water change of at least a 50% 2-3 times a week. Poor water quality as juveniles can lead to stunting, meaning irregular body shape, big goofy eyes and a poor digestive system overall. Bigger is better when buying discus. But even adults need regular water changes. I'd suggest nitrates at 15ppm maximum. I house mine with clown loaches and rummy nose tetras, both of which appreciate the clean water just as much.
wyzemann
wyzemann - 9 years ago
I sure hope it's just a myth, because I'm dying to accomplish an all Discus aquarium as soon once I get the right tank. I fell hard for their charm right here on YouTube and can't get enough of 'em!
