Hello Rich! I see your dicus have like a black dust on them my African Cichlids have that on them too! Is it black ich? How did the treatment go?
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 6 years ago
the "black dust" is what is called "peppering" when its seen on discus. Its certainly not ich (and I've never heard of a black ich). As far as discus are concerned its just pigmentation. It can come and go and is sometimes dependent on the color of the substrate and/or the background of the tank. Only pigeon blood discus end up displaying this peppering, some much more than others. Dark substrate and dark backgrounds can sometimes make it more pronounced in some fish....and if you take that same fish and put it in a lighter tank the peppering can sometimes be lessened or disappear. But I''ve never heard or seen of peppering in african cichlids!

When u do the PraziPro treatment , do u do water change first and dose Prime? As the PraziPro company asked NOT to do Prime with water change if I dose PeaziPro .

i thought so initially too.....but typical gill fluke treatments did not help. honestly the condition has never really changed so I think its an abnormality.

Sorry to see there's a problem with the discus -- you've had tough luck with them lately. I couldn't spot the gill problem while watching the video; is it inflamed or infected?
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 8 years ago
The problem is I'm not entirely sure whats going on. Its inflamed, and looks infected.

Hey brother! Hope you doing well. I've had a huge problem with flukes in koi ponds. Big problems! I treated with Ali general cure. Same combination of prazi and metro that your using. Was the only thing that ever worked. Even if not flukes, I think you hit the nail on the head.

+Rich's Fishes worked magic in the ponds. I purchased the large tub.

Yes I agree easy to say but tougher to do. I only have one discus tank and I use the same hose for all six tanks.
T Holz Aquariums
T Holz Aquariums - 8 years ago
Good luck with this I hope things work out. When you keep discus you're supposed to have a separate water changing hose for the discus tank. I don't have a separate hose either but now after seeing this I may get one.
Antonio de Luca
Antonio de Luca - 8 years ago
I know what you guys mean..it's easy for me with 2 tanks to have a separate hose..but not for everyone.
Rich's Fishes
Rich's Fishes - 8 years ago
Thanks man. Well, I cant say for sure how it happened; and so far it doesnt seem like its transferred to any other tanks. Sometimes those "suggestions" and "ideas" are awesome in theory but not necessarily practical. I have a fishroom with 17 tanks, 5 of which currently house discus.....even if I had separate hoses for each tank I'd never be able to keep em all separated and know which was which lol

hey, in general how often do you do water changes and how much %? (this question isn't linked to parasite problem I'm just curious because I want to soon keep discus)

+Rich's Fishes thanks for the info...I'm currently updating my filtration and hopefully within 2 weeks I should have my hands on 5 discus :)

I aim for at least 50% daily water changes in my bare bottom discus tanks. I do end up skipping a day here or there....and since these guys are almost full grown I'll sometimes go 3 days or so before getting to a water change; and when that happens I'll do a 80-90% water change. I think part of the issue I'm seeing is due to me falling behind on my maintenance; and these fish are getting a bit large for this tank too.

Rich, I never had to treat for gill flukes, but a while back I had to battle a internal worm problem. First thing, Increase water temp to 90 Degrees, second increase water changes to at least 90% each day, (if you can, use pre-treated, heated and aged over night) third check out www.mvpaquatics.com. He is also on aquabid. I purchase my Metronidazole from him. I get enough to treat 1600 gallons for around 45.00 I think. and this stuff is professional grade. Oh and treat every 24 hours after large water change.

+Rich's Fishes That is why I said to treat every 24 Hours. Large water change and treat. I treated for 11 days every day.

good advice. My problem is that I dont think I'm actually dealing with flukes, worms or any parasite for that matter. I hate dosing meds in a tank, but this time it called for it. The problem there is that the meds need to stay in the water to work; so the daily water changes need to be put on hold for a bit, at least in my opinion anyway. Hopefully I made the right choice this time....I'm still treating and hope to have an update out later this weekend.

In my opinion just fight for daily water changes of at least 60% along with a gill fluke based medication for a week that should get him back on his fins. A

Rich's Fishes - 8 years ago
Thanks Luke. The problem is I dont think I'm dealing with flukes; as the treatment didnt improve anything for me. The other problem with using meds is that they need to stay in the water for an extended period of time; so while I normally aim for large daily water changes in this tank, I put that on hold when medicating. I'm on to the next treatment already and should have another update out later this weeekend.

I stared out using the camera on my phone (samsung galaxy ....maybe the s5?); and have since switched over to a "real camera" and now use a nikon 1 series like this here: https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/nikon-1-cameras/index.page Picked it up used off craigslist and couldn't be happier!

You think so Neo? I did too at first; but now I'm leaning more towards a bacterial infection.
