Best Diving in the World. Cozumel , Mexico GoPro Hero3.

My last day of diving on the Cozumel reefs on our month long visit. Nov 12 to Dec 12 , 2012. The first reef is called Caracolillo and the second is Cedral. I was diving with one of my favourite dive company's " Dive with Martin"http://www.divewithmartin.com/ After over 250 dives with this company I can not recommend them more highly. Everyone from the dive masters, Captains, equipment managers and front desk staff are like family to me. Thank you Orlando for making this dive one of the best of the trip. Also I had a chance to meet once again one of my favourite dive buddies and her husband. I also meet some new dive buddies. I filmed this with the GoPro Hero2 in 1080p 30fps 16:9 wide aspect ratio. I used the flat lens housing from GoPro. Also at times used 2x Sola 2000's and a Backscatter magic flip filter http://www.backscatter.com/sku/bs-gp-mf-flip.lasso with the Snake River Prototyping tray and lockline arms. http://snakeriverprototyping.com/ I could have done a bit more editing but i think this video would be great while having a coffee and checking you email in the morning. Or even better on your 50" HD flat panel TV. Please hit like if you are logged into your google or youtube account also click subscribe if you would like to receive updates when my new videos are uploaded. ** adding this product to what I like to use as extension pole for GoPro http://www.gopole.com/product/gopole-reach and edit the title from "Word" to " World", lol. Dec/18/2013.

Very cool video. I have a request - in the future can you add a little text to the reefs where this was taken? We dive in Cozumel annually, and it will be nice know where this was taken. Strange how I feel I recognize the marine life.

I realize this video is five years old, but I just discovered it and for the benefit of any newcomers like me I'd like to post a suggestion on underwater videography/photography: with the exception of deep down in some of the crags and crevices, there's plenty of light at the depth and location where you're diving so you don't need an artificial light...and in fact you can see how the light often causes some of the highlights to "blow out." You can also see, though, by the weird skin tone of the diver, that SOMETHING is needed to fix the color. The answer is a magenta filter over the lens; that will absorb some of the yellow and cyan light, allowing more of the magentas and reds to show, thus making up for the red light absorbed by the water. HTH.

You can take a "Resort Course" when there and they will orient you in a pool and take you on a safer, more shallow dive to get a feel for it.

Great news! You were right. I didn't need to be PADI Scuba certified if I'm only snorkeling and feeding some stingrays in Grand Cayman. The receptionist from Shore Excursions Group said so herself. So I am 100% good to go.

You can still snorkel of course and you can try a dive that is called a resort dive where they take you shallow as a scuba diver. If your excursion is booked and the said you don't need to be certified that is probably what it is. So no worries, you will get to see amazing life underwater here. I am very excited for you!

Mike, Nice job post processing all your footage and adding the music. I dive the Playa del carmen / Cozumel area a few times a year and never get tired of it. It is a beautiful, accessible and affordable place to dive. A few questions for us wanna be underwater photographers. Can you tell us what type of lights you used? How many? Is the footage we are seeing actual speed, or did you slow it down a bit for more impact? Keep up the good work and dive safe.

I just shot a GoPro video in Cozumel this last week, just curious, I am not an expert film producer. That being said, what is the advantage of filming in 30fps opposed to the 60fps? Maybe the Hero 2 does not have that capability, I am not sure, but wouldn't you want the highest frame rate possible? Thanks for your help, your video is spectacular! It was my first time diving Cozumel and I must have watched this video a dozen times before the trip! Happy diving.
Jesper Sjoelander
Jesper Sjoelander - 8 years ago
You always wanna shoot in 30fps as shooting with less frames per second means that the camera gets more light into the lens (don't ask me how haha, but it's true) which in turn means that your video will be less noisy. Shooting in lower fps also means that shaking will be more evident as every shake will last twice as long in 30fps as opposed to 60fps. I'm no expert it that's my take on it.

I'm twelve turning 13 soon and when there is next a try dive, my mum is gonna book me in, if I like it I will ask if I could do the open water cert (certification) course! Do u have any diving tips for my mum and I? Yes my mum is a diver and she has been for ages. Anyway I just wanted to say I loved this video!
Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 9 years ago
+cuteskyxox I am so happy for you , that you are about to embark on your SCUBA experiences at such a young age. I didn't start scuba until I was a lot older and missed out on many years :) But for your question as far as certification there are a couple of options.

For me I was on a holiday with my girlfriend in Cozumel and I took the entire course while there after doing a snorkel trip and realizing I needed to get a little more up close and personnel with the Marin life. I took the course with Dive With Martin with their excellent instructors. You can get the Certification in as little as 3 days and is a great option but it will eat into your vacation days.

The second option is to get certified at your local dive shop. Depending on how close to your location the dive shop is this could be a option but time wise can be a little more spread out sometimes taking a few weeks to finish because you are spreading it out over a few weekends. Additionally you have to consider the area your local dive shop does there open water dives. For some it doesn't really matter , the term " Just add water" applies to them but some are more comfortable learning in warm clear water of the Caribbean ( Cozumel).

The 3rd option can include your dive shop or the dive shop on you vacation and usually streamlines the whole process. That option is to sign up for the PADI online course and you just have to pay to do your check out dives and underwater skills portion with either your dive shop or a dive shop like Dive With Martin.

When I got my son certified it was with the 3rd option. It was kind of a last minute trip and he was doing the online portion of the course a couple days before we left for Cozumel and was still doing course materials on his Laptop on the flight over. The next day he did his skills in a pool and the following day did his open water dives!!!

The course is super easy but takes a little bit of time to read and watch the videos in the course materials. The safety stuff is important but also remember it is supper easy and safe as long as you follow the simple rules set forth.

I am always looking for new dive buddies and if you and your Mom ever in Mexico between April 1st and May 31st call Dive With Martin and ask to be on Mike Gerries boat!

Wow. Can't wait to see this in person. We have a carribean cruise booked and I'm signed up on a two tank scuba exclusion. Our first cruise took us to Cozumel and hands down this location has the most to see when you snorkel. I'm slowly getting the fam to try scuba diving. I actually got them booked on a casta maya discover scuba while we are down there. Just couldn't sacrifice roatan or Cozumel two tanks. :) I'd love to get them certified for a week long Cozumel trip. Baby steps though since one is paranoid after a snuba exclusion regulator that breathed hard for them.

I have been diving in Cozumel and like you, simply had to get my certification. Now that I have it I would very much like to shore dive. Is there a good place to stay you can recommend in Cozumel for that? Of course I will boat dive also, but I want to shore dive and practice photography and video.

Thanks, and if anyone else has good recommendations I would appreciate that also. An all inclusive would be ideal but I do not want to narrow it down so much there is no place lol!

Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 9 years ago
+George Achileas I am glad you asked that question!  It was only 4 years ago now and I already have over 500 dives and am cave certified.    My first dive was with " Dive with Martin"  and I was not certified.  It was called a resort dive and is done on a shallow reef with your own Dive Master.  Once I did this first dive I JUST had to get certified.  I was on vacation for two weeks so I decided to take my certification right there and completed it in three days and have never looked back!  The other option I would look at is doing The online Padi course and complete the practical portion with your dive company of choice which can be completed in as little as two days!

+Annie Gibson it is really hard to find a bad place to stay from what I hear.  I rent a condo for a month at a time at the North end of the island.  Kind of out of the way and requires a car rental.  If your into all inclusive I had a great stay at the Iberostar hotel.  Last resort on the south.  If your a diver you get on the boat last down there and get off of the boat first to enjoy the rest of your day.   http://www.divewithmartin.com/  Dive with Martin will pick you up at the dock each morning no problem :)

+hhytgfr billybob It all depends on how you set it up.  If your in a cool air conditioned room with low humidity ( Hotel room).  Make sure it is completely dry inside ( easiest way to do that is too make sure it is dry before opening).  Then try and keep it out of the sun( under towel in pocket) until you go in the water.   Still there is a chance if there was any moisture inside the case even humid air as the camera gets quite warm.  But you should be ok.  One suggestion is if you have time before  you leave it might be worth buying the older case the one with the locking top.  Probably $49.99.  Maybe cheaper but it will leave room for the moisture strips and has a more secure locking mechanism for in water use.   Just make sure if you are using the LCD backpack door will fit the new case if you go that route.  I will see as I just got the Hero4 Black.  The Hero 3+  I had to order the older case.

Cool thanks! On my GoPro hero the anti fog strips are not compatible. Im not doing any hard car diving, just a little snorkeling with my kids. Will my underwater video be foggy  Do you think the filter will improve footage for snorkeling? You expertise and thoughts will be valued, thanks.
Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 9 years ago
Yes, I did use a filter the SWCY Filter from Snake River Prototyping.  Link is in the description.  Also I am glad you asked about the desiccants for anti fog strips.  I do use them.  One complaint about them you have to be careful not to get the little white specs that sometime rub off the anti fog strips and get on the lens.

I stay in a condo rental.  But I have also stayed at the Iberostar 3 x stars and was great.  I have heard good things about Park Royal and Hotel Cozumel is always a budget stay and close to the diving.  A real nice place to stay is The Palace.

Cozumel is so awesome!! Yes it's drift diving but not normally in a fast currant. Palancar deep has a short through cave that's cool. Lots of eels and lobster that will make you look for butter!! But!! Also barracuda!!! There is a awesome dive shop in the barracuda hotel. Very affordable. The best dive masters!!! I MISS MEXICO,!!

How deep are these dives?  If you turned the lights off, would you be able to see only greens and yellows on the video?  How about seeing color live, do you have to be in shallow water or use lights to see reds?
Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 9 years ago
Sorry for the late reply.  The footage is anywhere from 30' to 90' and to answer you honestly , no you would not see colour without  filter, lights or both.  Unless you have the time and patience to do post colour correction in a editing program afterwords.

Nice Video, I will be there on July,  what video setting did you set on GoPro? I was thinking on Video + pics same time, but the video resolution will be 1080/24fps
Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 10 years ago
I like 1080 or 2.7k and 30-60fps.  24fps is for cinimatic look and can be changed in post.  Higher the fps the easier and better results to slow motion capture.  2.7k is good if you want to crop the footage a bit without loosing viewable resolution.  I am using 2.7k and 30fps more and more.  I like wide angle because you can get up close.  The less water between you and your subject the better.  Of course it kinda sucks when you see that shark and you can not get close and the shot looks like it is taken from so far away.

Nice video, but "best diving in the world"?  I'll give you best diving in Mexico!  I dove with Tank Ha off Playa del Carmen.  Really good people too.  But the channel is prone to cloudiness with the 3 knot current.  It's nice to drift but often not as good for visibility.
Best diving ever for me was Freeport Bahamas.
Did you take the GoPro below 80 feet?  Not much diving deeper than that there.
Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 9 years ago
+Scampergirl  yes definitely also love the dive sites near Playa Del Carmen.  I make special trip there sometimes in search of lion fish and a change of scenery but you have to make it over to Cozumel there really is no comparison.  The caves or cenotes on the other hand are the best in the world!  So much beauty in one small area of the Yucatan.

So when do you know to flip down the filter?  I have zero experience filming under water and know that they're necessary at depth, but when do you decide to swap between the two?
Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 10 years ago
I leave the filter on all the time unless I am at surface.  each filter you get will have a depth rating.  0-30ft I use the SWCY and below 30ft I use the CY filter.  unless i use lights then I use the SWCY all the time.

Really nice job. The light kit really added  the ability to show coral hues, swim through's, and crevice critters like Crabs, lobster , eels and toadfish.

I also have a HDH 2, But with a flat, oversized circular lens modified by a third party supplier, as go pro didn't produce them at that time. I am now thinking of purchasing a flat lens case for the  camera so I can use filters instead of color correcting via computer program.

Do you think it's worth expanding the abilities of the 2, or shelling out for a 3?
Is your light rig easy on batteries, and easy to pack?

DWM rules!       thanks in in advance- Jim

Stunning work and artistry.  Excellent video, editing, and soundtrack (that matches some ot the turtle sequences!).  I just got back from snorkeling in Cozumel last week (I'm 63 years old), and had a great time filming and putting together a video as well.  It's uploading now to:  http://youtu.be/Orchp1bDfEg
Thank you so much for sharing.  I would LOVE to see some of the creatures you saw.  The nice thing about snorkeling is that close to the surface the great lighting from the sun suffices.
Happy diving!

I was in cozumel like 10 years as part of a Royal Caribbean cruise but didn't snorkel or anything. My aunt paid for it so I played nice and did whatever they(my mom, aunt) wanted to and were only there a few hours anyway. 8 years later my sister got married in playa del carmen/cancun area and I got to go jet ski/snorkeling. I saw some cool fish but no reef. I guess you have to dive to see really cool stuff but jet ski/snorkeling in Cancun was pretty tight. The azul beach hotel part of the Karisma hotel chain(pretty small chain- 8 properties) was pretty decent and maybe a lot more reasonable than a lot of hotels in Cancun plus it was all inclusive

You are welcome, maybe I will run into you next year.  Make sure to book with Dive With Martin and ask for Mike.  I might just be around.   Remember everyone if you can breath then you can scuba dive.  It takes no great skill and you don't need to be a athlete to do it.  Even if you have never done scuba you can take a special introductory dive in shallow water with lots of wildlife to see.  Then if you want you can get your certification right away :)

Awesome video. Very inspiring to me to get my own GoPro. I'm debating on this or a dive camera, and the more I watch dive videos, the more I want to go with GoPro. Have you used a dive mask with a GoPro mount also ? If so, how steady was it ?

John Bison - 10 years ago
Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to try both as well (mask and pole).
Mike Gerrie
Mike Gerrie - 10 years ago
Yes I have tried the mask mounts.  I find the shots are not as steady because every time I breath I get a bit of shake.  Having said that if you are aware of that and hold your head still you can get some interesting shots.  I have the Octo mask with GoPro attachment but it is a little small for me.   I just ordered a Holis M3 mask with Gopro attachment.

Kimberly, the camera tray I use is from Snake River Prototyping and can double as a tripod on sandy bottom if the current is not strong.  I do on occasion use a post production stabilization on certain shots to reduce shake but once i am back in the water for a day or two and I sort my buoyancy out.  My videos come out with a lot less shake.  There is definitely a learning curve though , you should see some of my earlier stuff lol.

I dove with Martin many times in Cozumel around 15 years ago and never had a bad dive with him.  Glad to hear that they are still going strong.  I purchased the dive housing for the Hero2 and tried using it in Barbados last week.  To my dismay, the latch popped open one minute into my time in the water and the camera no longer works since salt water got into it.  I am now debating on the Hero3+ Black or waiting a few months til the Hero4 is released.

Great video and I cannot wait to dive with my replacement camera after watching this video.

I have never have dove Thailand yet but would love to one of these days.  Cozumel, ranks as a top destination in the world for diving. If you do a google search of the top 10 places to dive in the world Cozumel makes into the top 10 on many sites.   Including world class cavern diving on the mainland.  Check out pictures for Dos Ojos Cave.  Despite the title there are of course many great places to dive all over the world but as I said Cozumel ranks right up there.  The huge underwater formations and walls are second to none.  Hope you make it there one day and if you dive with Dive With Martin.  Tell them GoPro Mike sent you.  :)

Great video, especially the first sequence of following the tortoise. (6:34) Looks like quite the variety of life down there. Can't wait to use the same camera for something like that.

Thanks for the kind words and I am glad you guys enjoyed the video. I am not sure how i got the extra time to upload. I got a message one day saying that I had been approved for longer uploads. The 2000's are pricey but if you are doing deep dives 60' plus the extra light is very good. At shallower depths i.e. 30' and your closer to your subjects the 1200's would be fine. I am actually thinking to use Wasp light system and maybe upgrade to a entry lvl SLR Like the Canon T3i

Wonderful stuff! Great shots - I particularly liked the long tracking shot/close ups of the tortuga and the shot of the 2 filefish, going to the 'cuda. A couple of questions: How did you get 16+ minutes to upload to YT? I've been restricted to 10-ish. And do you think the dual Sola 2000s are worth the investment? Would you buy them again for GoPro? Again, well done!!!
