Fukushima and The Pacific ☢ Survey Reef Dive 04-20-16 - Kahekili Beach Park, Maui

"Pacific Ocean and effects from Fukushima". Shore Diving on 04-20-16, at the reef just off of Kahekili Beach Park on Maui. Recording changes in the amount of sea life and overall health of this coral reef over the next 5 to 10 years. Depth between 15 - 30 feet. I have seen this reef much more lively then this in years past! Here is the GoPro video. "What's Fukushima?"

I'm in no way qualified to comment but .....
The few remaining fish look as if they are just caretaking an empty place. Which it must be, as all the tiny animals ie Bryozoans that built and inhabited the coral are gone, they were 'the colour'. I don't concur with the term 'bleaching', coral itself always would be white etc and I can assume the inhabitants of the coral will never be back. As with starving marine mammals etc I assume the lower food tier ie plankton and much of it microscopic (diatoms etc) has gone. Its ocean plankton that captures CO2 and releases oxygen. It was only in the 1970's James Lovelock discovered the gas DMS that is produced by plankton and is instrumental in controlling ocean weather systems, cloud formation.

Its difficult to find newer material to read for the latest findings, I often seek text as often it allows me to get to the message quicker, its always busy here, time limited. Its only recently I'm ashamed to say I woke up to the environmental catastrophe that is enveloping the planet; trump and Pruitt need to be relieved of their jobs, their destruction of the EPA is a crime against Humanity (and all living things).

WOW, Maui. Was there 5 times in the 80's. Such an abundance of sea life back then. This looks like a dessert! OMG! Hawaii, Paradise is gone forever. My heart goes out to you, Hawaiians! (((HUGZ)))

Way before Fukushima, coral reefs were being killed and bleached by rising ocean temperatures. It finally reached here after spreading for decades. Plenty of pre-Fukushima documentaries about this. By all means document your studies, but don't jump to conclusions.

yes, I'm assuming myself that its the death / absence of microscopic algae that is causing all this coral reef desertification, I do know they are very temperature sensitive. Damn Pruitt and damn trump - the EPA should be increasing its number of scientists, not laying them off or putting them on 'payroll' duties. To quote the Orange Clown ....... SAD!

Wish you'd done a before and after. Not being a diver, and never been to Hawaii, I can't say this isn't normal. However, I do believe it was much more beautiful before, but have no visual reference myself.

If you have video of before 3/11/2011, you should do a before and after video.

holy crap, that is significant coral bleaching. I was in this bay in 1997, there was no stopping the variety of colors and sea life that i saw. this looks like absolute shit.

Fukushima is definitely causing some massive damage to our oceans. Here in CA our beaches are washing up star fish that have a gelatinous fall apart disease plaguing them. also CA fisheries have put a complete stop to our rock crab fishing and salmon in the pacific northwest is at all time low. this a sign of things to come if we cant locate the molten cores of reactors 1-3 and put them in a concrete coffin, reactor 4 blew up a week after 3/11/11.

tepco has been pumping sea water into the destroyed Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant via fire hoses. This run off is collected as best as they can and stored in huge tanks at adjacent sites, the rest washes right into Pacific Ocean. these tanks have been leaking since they started using them and with their recent quakes it has no doubt caused even more damage. Point being, hawaii is probly gettin fucked in more ways than jus bleached coral.

FYI Chernobyl lasted 10 days....Fukushima never stopped. Cancer takes 10-15 yrs to develop, this is what Tepco and Nuclear power are counting on. In short, we should have evacuated pacific northwest the month this happened.

ahhh...why do I do this- I wanted to see it..but there's something about underwater mass areas where we don't know what's all in there ,,,when the diver looks into the distance..the smudged dark murky depths fill me with anxiety dread and fear and it feels almost like vertigo..even tho I'm sitting ...anyway it looks very dull and seems there should be more critters around ...

+Seán O'Nilbud im not lol. You cant even put a full sentence together. Ive done more research than youll ever think about doing at this point in my life. So font come in here talkin shit. Your probably some young dumbass who has no clue what the inverse square law is let alone ionized radiation. Now make sure when you respond to show your ignorance on the subject. I seen your other comments in here. Go back to your normalcy bias and leave the fight to people with a set.

There is a reason for people's numbness.  Most folk living today, detached from nature, never knew its spendors when oceans were safe, abundant water and food no worries, snowy peaks clear skies and bright stars, cool hamburgers and of course trust in government.  We aged souls suffers most~~~> caring for a dying loved one, our lovely lovely mother, wasting from the worst cancer.  Maybe the numb-nuts ones have the right idea??

Thanks, FansF. That looks sparse, when I think of snorkeling in the touristy Hanauma Bay, Oahu, back in the late 80s and early 90s. I was so fascinated by the abundance of colorful, beautiful and curious fish in that water. You really didn't have to swim to them, because they were everywhere. What you show here is in stark contrast to what I saw those years ago.

I'm not a diver...though it's not from a lack of desire, only opportunity. I would expect to see more color and diversity than we see here, though. Are sea stars and anemones native to those waters? I didn't see any.

+Kathy Bradbury....... Sometimes the color is more vivid when there's better lighting conditions and visibility is clear. It did seem to be a little cloudy in the water, depending on the weather conditions it should look pretty clear like a giant clean fish tank to about 80ft or more (give or take a lot). I been in those waters and it looks rather dull and sparse, missing barracuda, box fish, trumpet fish, lobster, sea cucumbers and what seemed to be a more plentiful diversity than it did in the late 80s in Lahaina, Maui. The little yellow tangs are all over the place as usual though. The whales should be there right about now doing there whale thing for the summer. Conditions are always subject to change on any given day though. From the air and cliffs the waters looks a very beautiful vibrant blue and so inviting. If you do get the chance to dive just do it. It easier than breathing on land most of the time.

+Kathy Bradbury Last dive I did at this spot two years back there had been a lot of Sea Stars, Sea Urchins, and varieties of larger size fish (such as triggerfish). Very few seen on this dive. :(
