Let's talk about science: the pressure at sea level is just 1 bar and it increases by 1 every 10 meters, do you breath underwater with a snorkel? Of course not! To breath, you must surface and on the surface, there is no pressure at all to breath in a tube.

What else? Ah yes, discomfort of breathing using another snorkel? Well maybe, maybe not but actually, technology would change nothing when you hold your breath to go at what...5 meters depth max. and re-breath every 30 seconds or so. Then if you are fit and do not exhaust yourself you should be able to use any kind of snorkel.
