The water is unbelievably clear and beautiful and can be surprisingly calm. Mooring balls, protected area, no fishing or spearfishing. ========= Dove with a local operator and had a great time. The reef is in a protected area so the marine life is very approachable. The reef is multi-fingered with a lot of soft and hard corals. We also saw a large green moray, a spotted moray, barracuda, filefish, lobster, and several small tropical fish. Our dive time was limited to 55 minutes by the operator, but you can definitely do an hour plus profile on this reef. ============== Great place for snorkeling. Much better than Key west. Wonderful experience. Must do for Marathon and Key west trip. We used Spirit Snorkeling, nice guys. =============== Snorkeling this reef is a must do when staying in the middle keys area (we stayed in Marathon). The reef itself was incredible - lots of plant life, crevices in the reef for fish to dart in and out of - and it is HUGE - we were able to spread way out from the other snorkelers in our group so that we weren't swimming on top of each other. Fish everywhere - ranging from cool neon colored ones, to a nurse shark and a couple of barracuda. We used Captain Pip's - reasonably priced, all snorkeling gear included - and for snorkelers only (not divers and snorkelers on one boat). ============== Keep our reefs alive! Don't touch anything! Beautiful and must have boat to access. Tunnels, lots of fish and mooring buoys. ================ The Sombrero Reef is an amazing natural wonder. Whether you snorkel or dive, it is worth the trip. You can swim with hundreds of species of friendly tropical fish. With the rate the worlds coral reefs are dying, I would make a trip to this one sooner rather than later! ============== Awesome trip and Scott and Issac made it very entertaining. Would definitely recommend to anyone!! We had 3 Individuals that just paid fee and didn't snorkel and had a wonderful time. Would do it again even for the boat ride! Bonus Those of us that snorkeled saw amazing Sea Life! ================= We were visiting Marathon and took the advice of others on TripAdvisor and we're so glad we did. It was absolutely beautiful. There's a lovely, expansive beach area. There are also bathroom facilities and outside showers. It's also a wonderful place to catch the sunset - even if it's blocked by dark clouds!
