Planted discus aquarium May 16th 2013 - UV Sterilizer added.

I added a Deep Blue in-tank 9 watt UV sterilizer 9 days ago to the sump area of the wet/dry filter. I added to unit to as a preventative measure against pathogens to help with overall fish health. A nice side effect has been a noticeable difference in the clarity of the water. The tank has been up approx. 4 1/2 months now and the plants are doing well, though there is still some brown algae growing on some of the Amazon Swords. I've added two lilies which have done great so far. I am running no Co2, but do add ferts weekly. Comments and feedback are welcome. This is my first attempt at either plants or discus. great video. There isn't much videos to prove you can keep plants alive with a uv running.  I think its cause you have a lower watt. maybe. I have lots of plants and i just was looking around for proof they can still survive. I had a bloom of algae that is driving me crazy.

Thanks for the comment Myra. A low watt UV sterilizer will take care of that algae bloom problem pretty quickly. You'd be amazed at the difference in water clarity after just 1 week. if you have a sump, I would suggest running it there, after the mechanical filtration. Running it inside the take would be less effective considering the increase amounts of particulate in the water. Putting it after the mechanical filtration will increase the effectiveness of the unit. I talk about that in the video which should be uploaded later today. I may need to make it 2 parts.

That is WONDERFUL my friend! I'm looking forward to that review! I also think I will even give that company a call. And suggest that they encourage more social media reaction from the customers. Their entire product line seems solid, and the concept of a GOOD uv that can work in the sump, without additional plumbing is GREAT! This NEEDS to be shared! Lol

With the deep blue 9w, the is NO EXTRA plumbing to worry about, NOTHING showing in the tank, and its EASILY removable for cleaning and service, without disrupting the entire tank,! I just needed to CONFIRM its effectiveness before I buy one

Wow! Thanks so much for the quick and detailed reply! I have been intrigued about putting this deep blue 9w in my sump, but have not seen any reviews from someone who ACTUALLY USED IT. ( until now!) I was also looking at the coralife 18w. Turbo twist, which is more expensive, but has a TON of positive user reviews. But what I like about this deep blue, is the simplicity! Just drop it in the sump, and let it do its thing! I have a 90 g freshwater tank, and a 20g sump, and I LIKE simplicity!

Hi mrmagic2713, thanks for the question. The aquarium is 72 gallons with an additional 10 gallons or so in the sump. I've been really impressed with the Deep Blue 9 watt sterilizer. Originally I purchased the unit as preventative maintenance against pathogens. However the unit has surprised me with dramatically increased clarity of the water. If I had know how improved the water clarity was going to be I would have purchased the unit for that alone, I like how well it fits in the sump also.
