Fish Hatchery Madness

So for my Fisheries and Wildlife Science course we had to go out to the fish hatcheries for a lab. In this lab we learn how to handle medium sized fish hybrids of brook trout and Atlantic char. We learn how to strip the eggs and sperm out of the fish, how to dry fertilize and wetfertilize the eggs. Then how to count the green eggs. I have to say that this was a fun lab.

I don't know what that dude hit on his calculator but 234 divided by 16 ml is 14.6 not 16.5...so 14.6x1800 ml is 26,325 eggs.

Selim I understand that many snakes where you live are very dangerous. It is a good thing for you to be wary of wild snakes and those people keep. However, Where I live in the United States we have fewer dangerous species. In my state New York, it is not allowed for anyone to keep dangerous snakes as pets that can kill with venom. The snakes I have are small only at 1.5 meters long at most, and they do not have venom. They are corn snakes and cannot kill a person. Big ones are only as wide as a large U.S. half dollar coin maybe a little more if they are overweight. We do not need to harm the snake and take out their teeth because they are not dangerous. :)

The only reason I'm commenting here is that the viewership seems to include some well-educated people and I have a question that I can't find an online forum to answer. I'd really like to find a marine biologist to address this question if possible, but I don't know any personally and don't know where to find any locally. So my question is, on beaches in Virginia and North Carolina, we see a lot of skate fish eggs, "mermaid's purses" -- the black ones with pointed corners. These are definitely skate eggs as rays give live birth and nothing else comes close to looking like mermaid's purses. My question is, when I find them and they haven't hatched yet, should I throw them back? Is there a possibility they'll still hatch, or is this pointless once they've been out of the water for a few minutes? And can I stand at water's edge in my blue jeans and throw them like a frisbee as far out to sea as I can, or do I have to be more gentle than that, leaving them closer in where people may step on them, or rolling up my jeans and wading a bit into the water?

I can feel that a lot of them are heavy and cool to the touch, sometimes with a sort of shifting weight that you get with things that have water in them, and I'm sure that most haven't hatched yet. I rarely go to the beach when I'm in Virginia because the sand fleas bite my ankles so much, but when I do, it seems that most of my time is spent throwing mermaid's purses back into the water and I leave exhausted because there are so many of them. Also I've read elsewhere that because they're so light, they tend to come in during high tides. I'm the only one I see throwing them back, though, so what do other people know that I don't, or am I just the only one who worries about the baby fish inside?
Shark Bait
Shark Bait - 7 years ago
Pam Rotella I know this comment is old, but I felt like responding. In a single word: no. The egg sacs your finding died a long time ago and won't hatch. Especially if they had dried out in the hot sun. A lot of the ones are split open I'm sure you've noticed. Those are the egg sacs that have actually hatched and have simply washed ashore. But the closed ones never did because they most likely were bad eggs to begin with, or they washed up before hatching. Too late to throw them back either way.
David Dibble
David Dibble - 8 years ago
i am a big great lake trout fisherman do you think you can use the eggs for bait and tie them in egg sacs?
Terra-Anne Bacon
Terra-Anne Bacon - 8 years ago
I am positive you can use the eggs for bait, but I don't know if you can tie them at all. They don't stick together like frog eggs or other fish species. These hybrids lay lots of eggs but they can be washed away by moving water pretty easily and I don't think there's a way to tie a single egg onto anything. I'm not a big fly fisher and don't use bait when I fish the lakes in NY so I can't help you there sorry.

ONE: DIscus fish have specific requirements like other freshwater fish - once you understand these requirements, they are just like other pet fish!
TWO: All of the supplies and equipment that you can possibly need to care for discus fish are widely available
THREE: Discus fish are a hardy species - unless you really neglect your pet fish, the ones in your tank will do their best to adapt

I agree that this is good, keeping the fish population up.. but the way they were squeezing her and pushing those eggs out was cruel.. I know they have no intention to hurt them, but its sad to see that people cant let these animals be, and let them spawn on their own. I know its educational and it helps others further understand spawning, but this is not ok.

The fish is knocked out. It's the same as putting a human under anesthesia for surgery. They don't feel a thing. This is to take the pressure of populations from fishing or to stop fishing by providing farm raised fish. This is also done with koi since they don't appear in the wild.

Natalie Wiltshaw

I guess so, but what i really meant was that i'd prefer to eat captive fish instead of them going to waste and it means that less wild fish are taken from their habitat which means that their numbers improve. Ever watched the documentary called the cove? they mention how asian countries are killing off certain species of tuna (a form of tuna that is currently protected and illegal to buy and sell in the UK.

Some are fed antibiotics, chicken poo, pig poo and overcrowed.   Not all but many.  And the wild salmon are getting a mite that  the farm raised ones have shared with them.......and now our wild salmon are dropping in numbers, not to mention the GMO salmon that have been approved by the US FDA.
Aaron Yang
Aaron Yang - 10 years ago
They would probably be able to do it naturally in the wild, but they are so stressed in captive so of course they would have to do it by hand. Personally I think that looked painful for the fish, its stomach was all flabby after that and didn't look natural at all.

If happened naturally they probably die afterwards.

Artificial fertilization produces a higher percentage of viable, healthy eggs as well as increasing fry survival through tank-rearing.

Brady Tarylton

+Aaron Yang Aaron if they do not not spawn them out, they would die of a condition called "Egg Rot", these fish are un natural hybrids so for them to spawn in the wild is not likely. What they do is not wrong and if the fisheries schools did not do what they do, most fish species would be extinct today.
Terra-Anne Bacon
Terra-Anne Bacon - 9 years ago
Yes these fish were for eating. I often saw members of the public come in to buy dozens of them. The school also used many for their seafood dishes. Besides it would be irresponsible for a school, state biologist, or anyone else to release hybrid fish without knowing what impact they would have on the natural species of an area.
Rose Lee
Rose Lee - 9 years ago
+Terra-Anne Bacon were they there for eating? I figured they would release them afterward, theres some hatcheries that do that for species with a low population. (don't worry I'm not one of those crazy "OMG THE POOR FISHIES!" people) just curious

Terra-Anne Bacon

+cameron747100 These fish in this video were hybrids between Arctic Char and Brook trout. They could not spawn on their own without human intervention. Just to make that clear.. Indeed there are many pet species and of course naturally wild species that can and do spawn on their own in captivity if given the correct conditions.
cameron747100
cameron747100 - 10 years ago
they can breed naturally in captive, I cant stop my fish breeding in my fish tank
Terra-Anne Bacon
Terra-Anne Bacon - 10 years ago
That was not the fish stomach. That was the lower area of the female where eggs are held. In a week or so this area fattens up again and it is completely normal for the female to look "flabby" after having her eggs released from her. They do look like this naturally after spawning in the wild.
Fish Ed
Fish Ed - 10 years ago
+Adriel M. Oh so are you saying humans are failed species as well since we need medical attention when giving birth?
These fish can lay egg naturally, is just that they squeeze the egg out to collect easier and faster because when it is released underwater it will be harder to scoop out. A female would release eggs when the male is around and the male will straight away fertilize the eggs so artificial insemination isn't possible.
For example, a tub of eggs from 1 specimen can be separated and fertilized with 2 different male sperm. Instead of breeding the same female twice with 2 different males. Not only that, sometimes selective breeding isnt possible due to reasons such as aggression or the fish not suitable for each other this is where artificial insemination comes in handy because the 2 fish will not meet and still produce the babies.
Terra-Anne Bacon
Terra-Anne Bacon - 8 years ago
+Fish Ed I don't know what started this argument but I answered somebody else much earlier on that we HAVE to squeeze the eggs out for these fish because they can't do it themselves. It is because they are hybrids, it's not because there are no males around to make the females release the eggs. This is a problem with this genetically different hybrid compared to your wild species.

Though you make a good point that by being able to release the eggs ourselves it makes it easier to choose which male that we would like to have his sperm will fertilize.

+Terra-Anne Bacon Hello, can these fish reproduce on their own? Someone on the video said they couldn't unless we intervened. I thought it was odd for them to not being able to. By the way, I know we breed fish for desired traits, etc etc

Terra-Anne Bacon - 10 years ago
+Adriel M. I apologize for not getting to your question earlier. Youtube is not listing it. Can you PM me your question?
Adriel MUtopia
Adriel MUtopia - 10 years ago
We can give birth without medical attention. We use medical attention to decrease risks because we can reason. If you watch the video, someone here said they can't reproduce without any human intervention. Thus, I replied because of that, but I got no answer to my question, until you asked me for another question.

I'm going for my bachelors so I have not graduated yet. I'm going into my junior year. As for getting a job. Yes it is competitive even though there are jobs opening up. As long as you get an internship every summer and put out a bunch of applications to jobs you should by the time you graduate have a job.

This was uploaded in 2011... Did you graduate yet? And what did you go for? Biology or ecologist? I'm going to school for the same thing soon. Also, do you find the fish wildlife job field to be flooded and competitive? Or is it easy to get a job?

Wow this is sickening. Just because fish are less advanced than us doesn't mean we should do this to them. Imagine if aliens 50xs smarter than us came and did this to us. Put us in cages and farmed us in this way. FORCEFULLY breeding. It'd be terrible for us and it's terrible for the fish so why the hell do we do it? I know people don't really give a shit about fish but my god they're living creatures give them some fucking respect.

That is to ensure the fry (if the fish's eggs get fertalized) don't get ate by the fish in the tank (the whole squeezing all the eggs out). And fish are happy to get all those eggs out, they're heavy! :) At least, that's what I've heard.

I was wondering about the fish breathing. I know the gills stay wet and all, but people would have a hard time holding their breath long like when the eggs were taken out of the female. But fish can kind of breathe air? Like when gets in water in their gills they can absorb a little that is way too little to survive, but enough to make it so they last longer out of water? O.o

It's easy to do. whenever my cichlids have their mouths swollen (eggs), i just hold them in my left hand, positioned with tail resting on my smallest finger and the head between thumb and pointing finger.then use right hand with either a toothpick or q-tip with the end cut off to open their mouth.tilt the fish downward in the water as soon as the mouth is open so that fish and or eggs come out.
