I was rather shocked at 38 seconds in the video when the demonstration showed using the point of scissors pointed right into their off hand to drill the hole in the bottle cap. Since this kind of project is one that small children might attempt the disregard for common safety was stunning. I mentored a group of high school age kids in a number of projects for several years, it was shocking that nobody had ever taught them to use tools in a safe manner, they would do things like this, and other things like using an Xacto knife in a manner that any slip could result in a serious wound to their other hand or other body part. Personal safety is extremely important when using sharp tools, PLEASE review your videos for poor safety practices like this, everybody needs to use tools safely! Kids need to be taught this stuff starting as soon as they start using tools to make or repair things.

+Ray Kent ps the strength of material you need depends on the pressure it needs to support, which depends on the depth of your aquarium. I reckon bike tube will easily support 1m head of water. Don't fret, it's cheap to experiment!

Big party balloons are made of slightly thicker rubber than smaller ones, but thinner than bike tubes, probably suitable. Others have cut bits out of rubber gloves to make a diaphragm pump like this.

Nice project. I'd put a diffuser/air stone (or what ever their called) on the end of the air line though. I've always been told that they help to "aireate (?)" the water better.

I had about 20 cheaper fish that the bloke assured me would be fine in a small outdoor pond most of the year but I should bring them indoors for the winter, using the pondwater, not tapwater. Next morning, all dead. Seems that the warm up overnight was too quick for the poor little blighters.

+Ray Kent Yeah, I tried that route when my daughter was young. What a mistake that was. We managed to kill off about $300.00 worth of fish in a couple of months. I was doing everything I was suppose to, guess my "fishing thumb " wasn't as good as my "green thumb". Never again.

+Thomas Pigg Yep, for the same volume of air, if you break it into tiny bubbles it has a much higher surface area and will oxygenate the water more effectively (up to the limit that water will support at the given temperature). I don't know anything about tropical fish, but it seems they need quite precise care!

+HappySlappy Face What??? I apologize but I don't fully understand your comment. Yes I know fish need oxygen in their water to breathe. Sorry, but if that's what you're getting at I already know.
The reason I suggested adding an "air stone" is to break up the air bubbles that are coming from the pump. Small air bubbles diffuse in the water more rapidly than large bubbles. I have three medium size air pumps on my thirty five gallon tank. Two of them go to 3/4"X3/4"X6" long diffusers and the other is just bubbling away helping to "churn" the water. I've been told that I need to add another large air pump or at least two medium sized ones.

just a small critic to all of you YouTube makers: work just a bit more professianal for example use a 4,5 Volt battery for a 4,5 Volt Motor not 9 Volts and don't hotglue it down so you can't change it...

BTW imagine it what your design in your mind with this material that i said :D?
