How to Propagate Your Own Moss

So you want to know how to propagate your own moss for use in a terrarium or vivarium? Well this video should give you a good foundation to build off of. This was by far one of the most requested videos by all of you. I apologize for it taking so long, but I wanted to wait till it got warmer out to do this demonstration. If there are other topics you'd like me to cover, definitely let me know! I'm also on Instagram @serpadesign

Hey everyone and happy father's day to all the dads out there (pet dads count too)! Anyways here is the long awaited and highly requested moss care video. You guys have been asking me about this for about 9 months and it may have been the most requested video yet. This whole process is really quite simple and relatively cheap. Especially if you harvest the moss yourself. There's no need to over think it.

If there are any looming questions, be sure to let me know! Also it's easier for me to address your comments if you start your own thread.

By the way, I think I neglected to thank you all for 50k subs! It really means a lot and I appreciate your support. Thanks for watching and don't forget I'm on Instagram as well @serpadesign

You'll get mold with that, for sure. Just use water and moss, toss it in the blender for a couple quick pulses, then spread that mixture. Keep that misted at least twice a day until you see new growth then back off to maybe once a day if it's in a terrarium.

In most cases no, since it grows via spores. Hence why you see moss growing on trees, rocks, etc.

Here in California the moss evolved to go dormant rather than die, or at least it seems that way, and while this particular area that I live in isn't a desert, moss is an important part of the bio-crust of the southwestern deserts of North America, as well as others such as lichen, and most of all, cyanobacteria which make the foundation for all these other organisms.

So helpful! You sir, have earned a new sub. I just have a couple questions.
How many wash cycles do you typically use per moss? Do the species differ?
And what is the proper wait time before making a backyard moss into a pet friendly moss?
You said months, but when do you reckon is a solid time to start introducing one?

Again, great video. Extra points for the editing. Cheers!

I Did some research on moss beforehand and I think the reason why the pillow mosses are dying is because they need some time to dry out. They're called acrocarpous mosses and they just need to dry out every now and then.
They're not very well suited for constantly moist terrariums but probably would benefit more on bonsai trees.

I live in a sunny relatively warm and dry city, though there are creeks around about, though the creeks don't have much moss, however during the "winter" (jacket wearing is negligible during the winter) moss can be found between the clay bricks, the ground itself is compact adobe clay decent for building things with, so it's not like the moss that miraculously grows every winter (and whenever else rain comes...) has to worry about water draining fast, among other details that allow it to prosper, though I would like to drive to the Redwood National Park to collect moss off of a giant sequoia, I would be honored to scrape moss from Hyperion, though I'm fairly certain that I'll never find Hyperion (current tallest giant sequoia & tallest tree on earth, recorded anyways), now for me to find a June bug, they were common just a decade ago, now they're so rare.

ive researched this a bunch and alot of people suggest filling a blender with milk then throwing the moss in and blending it up into a pulp the idea is the mass seeds are way too small to be wrecked by the blades and the milk helps the seeds grow then from there you pour the milk into a pot or anywhere you want the moss to grow. it all makes sense this is what they do with blueberry seeds and they are much bigger then moss seeds.
QueenlySweetpea
QueenlySweetpea - 6 years ago
Your research was pretty sloppy if you think milk was used which is wrong, ~ it has to be buttermilk ..

You got so many kinds of moss. Where i olive, in a big town, i cannot find more than just two kinds of moss. Is it possible for you to ,prepare a so-called mixed "moss slurry" and send it to me? This way, I can finally grow many varieties, too. I grow them inside an enclosed container (my orchidarium). In exchange, if you like, I could offer you seeds of our local (exotic) plants (fruits, herbs, vegetables).Thank you.

I remember back in 2009 I was lucky enough to go to a very rural part of Scotland. no idea where we went but during some tripa small group of us broke away and got of track. after a good 3 hours of climbing and cutting through dense vegetation we ended up in a very silent, open area of woodland. the ground was so soft and lush, the moss must have been a good 7/8 inches deep and really moist. I can't describe the silence, I guess the trees and soft ground had a dampening effect.
when we got out of the woods the literal first thing that greeted us were two fighter jets, after the lack of noise their scream was so artificial. like hyper loud, and we were so high up they seemed really low. they were going to fast to even make out what fighters they were

Another highly informative video. Thanks. In future terminology, you might consider altering your vocabulary, to more accurately refer to the substrate layer material as 'soil' or 'earth'. 'Dirt' is what you sweep up or suck up in a vacuum cleaner, and has a slightly negative connotation.
SerpaDesign
SerpaDesign - 6 years ago
I never have referred to "dirt" as the stuff I suck up with the vacuum lol! Nor would I consider it to be derogatory. There's just many ways to say the same thing.
headfullofrhythm
headfullofrhythm - 6 years ago
Hi Naerwyn. In common vernacular, you are correct, dirt is often used (unfortunately) to refer to soil. However, in scientific terms (more accurate, less colloquial), it isn't accurate. Consider that for such an amazing substance -one that is highly responsible for facilitating life on land, and for which didn't exist for most of our planet's history, to be so irreverently named seems unaware and unkind. Either that or we come up with another name for what we empty from the vacuum. Just saying'.
Naerwyn

Dirt is a synonym for earth or soil. No need to alter his vocabulary.

Hi. I just watched a video about moss growing in Japan and it comes to be true moss relies on water but it can also drawn in water because moss lacks the ability to store water as other plants do, say cactus or trees. So what is happening to your pillow moss is that it is getting drawn in water because the air is to thick with humidity. You are obviously an expert but it might be that you are adding to much water to those containers and i mean those things are microscopic so a little bit less water might come handy and, in a extreme case of moss'love, opening the container for half a day too. If you ever come to pass by Spanish moss or tillandsias knowing that you can soak them in water for half a day every week comes in handy and those are likely to be hard to maintain in a terrarium. Extremely hard.

How long does it take in your experience for a moss farm (similar to yours, but not exactly the same since I put some into my emersed bins with Crypt lutea 'green' - the Cryptocoryne have similar moisture requirements so I figured why not and didn't know of anything like this) to get established where you can harvest from it? I only collected a little bit from the north side of ASU's campus and am wondering when it'll start to reproduce and grow. It's more long and hairy compared to all of yours (from the looks of it).

Oh, and if you can just give me how long it takes for your design to mature that's fine. I'll definitely be trying it in the future, so it's not imperative you know what I'm talking about with the emersed crypt bin I have set up.

Hey SerpaDesign! I am so happy that I have discovered your channel! I watched some of your terrarium builds like three times in a row each, haha! You truly have a gift! I have always wanted to create a terrarium, but I guess I built it up in my mind as something incredibly difficult. After learning so much in one to two videos, I immediately felt empowered to give it a go! I had some big vintage mason and bell jars in my closet that were given to me by my grandma that were the perfect thing to use! Thank you so much for making your passion and expertise so accessible :) I know you've heard it before, but seriously. These videos are so entertaining (and educational!)

That being said, I had a calidium that apparently overwintered and came back! I thought I had lost it so I planted something else in the pot. Unfortunately I do not have the scientific name. I believe when I purchased it last summer it was simply sold as "pink caladium.' I was wondering if you would have any guidance on whether or not it could be used successfully in an enclosure (like a gallonish sized bell jar). It's rather small right now (and precious), but when I was reading about them I know that some get quite large. Have you ever had success with this species of plant?

Then you do the same as a mini-pond, but not mini.
Dig the shape you want your pond/lake/etc and then either make a concrete bottom, or line with a thick plastic. You can then add whatever substrate (Dirt, rocks, etc) to the bottom.

Hi, yep, it does. I found this bit to summarize it all for you. =)

Making a quick guess I would say that Sunlight would dry them out fairly quickly as they do not have the dead layer of keratinized cells on their surface that protects them as mammals do. Also UV light will damage their DNA pretty rapidly, again for similar reasons, so keeping in the dark and having a photosensitive response to sunlight would likely have been an evolutionarily advantageous strategy for the niche they inhabit. – AMR Nov 18 '15 at 14:01
1
And yes, cells, even unicellular organism, can be sensitive to light and can move as a result of those sensations. Aquatic Microorganisms will often adjust the depth they are at in water as a result of the presence or absence of light. Remember that a photon will impart its energy on electrons in the cell and excited electrons can cause chemical reactions to take place and these reactions can stimulate the organism to move. – AMR Nov 18 '15 at 14:06

It will sounds counter-intuitive you but earthworms do sense light with their skin. They don't have eyes but they have specialized nerve ending equipped with photoreceptor cells. They are all over skin but concentrated towards first segment of worm. Prostomiun are main light sensing organ in worms. Following image shows their position in first segment of earthworm. (Image source: cronodon.com).

Structure of photoreceptors

Earthworm have microvillar photoreceptors like insects (Rohlich et al 1970). Detailed structure is discovered long back. enter image description here

There is not much information about phototrasnduction in worms but it is well characterized in it's close relative C. elegans (Ward et al 2007).

Now coming to why part, you might wonder if they are spending most of time buried why do they need photoreceptors ? @AMR has guessed it correctly. They use this as protective system. Photoreceptors helps them providing information about how near they are to surface because UV radiation will harm them or probably kill. If there is higher light sensing, they go back to darker regions. You can find similar information from UMICH press release.

I have a hypothesis about your pillow moss, and why it dies in the setup shown in this video. Over the last few months I've gathered local mosses from forests in the area (NJ/NY border, so Northern temperate species just like the ones shown here).

When I find it in the wild, pillow moss always seems to grow tightly adhered to smooth, flat surfaces, usually rocks. It also grows in sunny, somewhat drier areas, relative to the other mosses I find.

Maybe your pillow moss is dying out because it doesn't like the moisture of the substrate beneath it?

In a terrarium I built last week, I tried putting the pillow moss on a flat rock. It seems to have adhered nicely, and doesn't show any signs of malaise. We'll see if over time it continues to thrive in this spot.

Thank you for all your hard work, and for inspiring what has become a very fulfilling hobby for me. One day I'm gonna make a video to show you all the work you've inspired... I just gave one to my dad and grandpa for Father's day! :)

sakuya512 the pillow moss i just gathered from the park(was flourishing everywhere i looked) was growing on what appeared to be about 70-80% sand and 20-30% soil, thus i would assume that it doesn't mind soil as long as there is a HIGH level of drainage

Rose's orchid ramblings!

hi serpa, i have a question i live in holland/ the Nederlands and i just collected a few types of moss. I have a porch on the south side of my house and I put all the spagnum moss (at least I think it is spagnum) into my potted Lilly's that I keep on the porch (so I have less chance of it getting eaten by Lilly beetles. I have no idea of spagnum can trive on regular potting soil or can withstand the high levels of sunlight my porch gets (it has a clear polycarbonate roof) and gets really hot in summer time before I put up the shade fabric. I also got some moss that looks like little stars growing in spikes. I keep that one in a container in top of gravel and it's own soil I harvested in and keep it in the shade. I keep it wet at all times but my real question is can I propagate moss without an air tight container in the environment I just described? I don't have a terarium of vivarium (yet ) and I actually wanted to propagate it to keep on top of some orchids that need extra moister to help them root and grow. I read somewhere that a lot of orcid growers to that to speed up root growth..and I like the look of the moss in the pots instead of looking at the potting soil..
long story short can I continue as I'm doing now or do I need to change the setup?

Pillow moss, from what I notice, likes to dry out and tends to grow on rocky-shaded environments. The other mosses thrive in moist environments.
I am not sure but what I notice growing underwater in a clear vase with some gravel was thought to be algae but was actually thread moss. They look like thin wisps of hair algae but were actually moss.

i once tried to grow sphagnum moss for my carnivorous plants, kept it the same way as shown in the video, but instead of under led lights i gave them a few hours of direct sunlight a day. even tough the moss grows natural in full sunlight all day long, it did not seem to like to be kept in a closed container. in the end to combination of stagnant air + high temperatures from direct sunlight caused it to die. ;(

Can you do a video where you explain the science behind some of things you do in you videos? Like how exactly does activated carbon and charcoal keep water clean? Also, what exactly are the springtails doing? They eat some chemicals in the dirt, and poop out other chemicals, but which chemicals are they and why is it beneficial? Also, I know plants need certain chemicals to grow, maybe an episode dedicated to the ratios of all the good fertilizing chemicals in your substrate would be cool.
