do you need fertilizer for the plants to grow? i already have a stocked 20 gallon tank and i want to set it up like a proper planted tank. i tend to just pick any plant. but ive ordered a collection for my tank size. but do i need to put fertilizer in.

you don't need a substrate heater, a normal heater for the aquarium is all you need.

A substrate heater, isn't necessary, just have a normal one. Don't use tetra substrate use Tropica much better.

you dont need a heater if you use T5 lights. dont use stick unless plants dont grow. dont think you can over do it.

Would it be benifical to use the complete substrate AND the initial sticks?? Or would that just be over kill?? or bad even? How nessesary is it to have a substrate heater?

there'sd no need to take the plants out of the tank when changing the water. Just change it. :)

You're right they can't, but there is naturally co2 in the water and more is excreted by fish.

Some plants don't need them but you can easily make a DIY co2 reactor

I decided to add plants after my aquarium was established, so my substrate is crap for plants.

If you use potting soil or other good substrates, and have good lighting, you will not need it, b/c the water already has c02 given off by fish and microorganisms.

are you supposed to use some special uv emitting lamps or bulbs? like are they important for keeping fish alive or is just regular sunlight fine? and how do you know if you even need any light fixtures in the first place?

You shouldn't ever have to change all the water, and if you have to remove the plants, be very careful with their roots. Otherwise, it is better not to remove the plants if possible. You should never change more than 50% of your water at any time unless of some catastrophe.

i have a question not only for theliddlefishdocter but anyone who is an expert on fish. when changing the water do i remove all the plants or will they die if i remove them?
