You have to attack the real reason you have algea : light intensity, overstocking, filtration, waterchanges, bad cleaning, dead spots with organic waste,.. or whatever... and try to find a natural solution. For every algea problem there are natural solutions.
Good luck Jay.
1 Don't add more then 3 or 4 fish at a time. Adding too may fish will increase the bio load.
2 Float the bag for 15 min.
3 Drip in at least two or three times. With 10 to 15 min between each.
4 Get bucket and large net.
5 Dump the fish water into bucket and catch fish with net.
6 Add fish.
If possible invest in a quarantine tank.
the only place that really kills fish by not caring for them is walmart.
Get atleast 75 gallons
But the algae is helpful a little for the Pleco,Upside down catfish ad the mollies cause they eat algae
Think I saw a tinfoil barb in there also. I might be wrong. If it is, you should know they get to over a foot long eventually. Way too big for a 55 gallon tank. And if that's not enough, it's recommended that they be kept in schools of 5 or more.
As for the tiger barbs, I heard you say something about their potential to be aggressive. Guess you're aware of their reputation as "fin nippers". I've been told you can curb this by keeping them in groups of 8 or more. They get too busy amongst themselves to bother the other tank mates.
And keep an eye on those mollies. Males don't like each other.
PetSmart and Petco don't always tell their customers these things. The people working there try their best but sometimes they put some kid who is more comfortable around dogs and cats in the aquarium section. Best to go to stores that specialize in fishkeeping. Anyway, good luck.....

Im putting together a 75 gallon tank (about 70 gallons when you concider water displacement for ornaments) and Im only alotting myself 50 inches of fish, shrimps, and crabs maximum.
This will help keep the tank clean.
For example, a cardinal tetra is very flat and torpedo shaped, while a Black Skirt Tetra is more disc shaped. Despite both of them listed as 2 inches.
This means that you could put more cardinals in an aquarium than you could put Black Skirts.
You have a lot of black algae in the tank. Live plants would help keep it down. Less light, feed fish extremely less, take out all the decorations that have algae on it, scrap glass, and filters and clean it all off. You have a lot of phosphates in your tank, which can create algae. Every week do a water change and clean your gravel very good. Never skip a week without doing a water change. I have a 55g tank just like you, skipped a week and my water was not sparkling clean. My plants loved it but I like clear water. Clean your hang on the back filter as directed on the instructions. I think that is what you have. If you have carbon filters, update them monthly. Use aquarium water to clean your filter, so you don't destroy your beneficial bacteria instead of using tap water directly, which will destroy them. I think if you do these things, you will have less algae. It won't go completely away, but it won't look like a forest of black algae in what you have.
Put a net horizontally on top of an empty little container and pour the water gently but determined through the net so the fish will be in the net. Take the net with the fish and put the fish in the aquarium. throw the water from the LFS away.
If necessary : first adapt fish in new water with other parameters by slowly adding tankwater in new water (f.e. in the seperate container) for at least a couple of hours (f.e. also see syphon drip system), before putting fish in the tank (with a net).
here's something important to know not all petsmart are the same and not all of them abuse their animals.if you do see abuse don't just I'm not going to shop their call cooperate they'll try to fix it.cause believe it or not they aren't heartless just a business.
also that sounds like the petsmart you went to has a very bad supplier if they have birds with pin head feathers.also there fish shouldn't be dieing with in 3 days and if they are that is a big problem as well and could again be the suppliers fault for sending sick fish, the pet care associate not doing their job or a shit manger.
just look through the comment section and you are likely to spot what this is really about.
Pussy
I really dont want to sound mean or rude or anything just want you to know really.

people who have gotten cocky in the hobby have gotten hit hard by some disease that wiped out their tank that could of easily been avoid had they decided to quarantine.but they didn't cause they thought that all fish diseases are easy to tell and that fish owes show clear signs when sick.
well I'll guess I'll explain again.do to how many fish these stores tend to have it is unavoidable for some fish to die.every shipment of fish has the possibility of having doas no matter how good they are.so seeing a few dead fish here and there is nothing.
also the policy for pet stores is to euthanize any sick animal since it would be costly to treat, risk the stock, the animal may not get well and the animal is suffering.
will do, and thanks
thanks!
some people actually add those snails to their tanks cause they have a low bioload but clean the tank pretty well.
