HOW TO: Making a Crystal Red Shrimp Planted Breeding Aquarium | TonyTanks

In this video I show you how I make a high power led lighting system and the process in setting up this 27 gallon tank (60cm*50cm*35cm) to breed Crystal Red Shrimp. During the 2 months of in between time I did various changes to the aquarium. First I removed the sand and changed it with dark pebbles because it was extremely difficult to clean up and got messy really quickly. Second, I removed all the large black pebbles because I wanted the plants to grow in the maximum amount of space available. I do not have any filter on the aquarium for the safety of the baby shrimp. The only filtration are the plants and to the moment they have worked perfectly. Currently there are berried Crystal Red Shrimp and im anxious to see the little ones :) INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/TonyTVTanks MUSIC: 1. Perspectives - Kevin MacLeod 2. "a few changes later." Let me guess: Since your light is WAAAAAY overkill and I don't see much water flow happening here, you found yourself battling a huge algae outbreak and that nice white sand was covered in a blue-green cyanobacteria that was getting out of control. Removal of rocks and sand was easier than a complete tear-down.

add a sponge filter and make the housing out of the same slate tiles you use for the hardscape. fish tank needs some filtration to keeps good parameters but you already know that.

A Finnex fixture costs half as much and puts out as much light. There are tons of crappy LED strips you can buy that don't work in planted tanks, but there are also plenty that work well, and we've gotten to the point where building your own for a standard tank size doesn't really make sense anymore.

it's not really possible to obtain something like that in a fish tank.the reason is a tank doesn't experience the water cycle and will eventually need the water refreshed.also the shrimp will need feeding to get nutrition that the bio film lacks like calcium.

+TonyTanks > "[...] in general its a really low maintenance tank [...]"
Do you think it is possible to setup a small self-sustained shrimp aquarium? (no water changes, no need to feed the shrimps, no need to clean the floor, ...)

Something like let the algae grow and let the shrimps clean the aquarium by eating the algae.

What specifically about this design/setup makes it a breeding tank? The plant selection, the lighting, the divided substrate sections? Also, if you look around Adafruit, you can find some programmable LED strips, so you don't have to do the whole mounting and soldering. Thanks for the video!
TonyTanks
TonyTanks - 8 years ago
The most important aspect about this tank that makes it a good breeding tank is the fact that it doesnt need mechanical filtration that can kill the newly born shrimp. Also the large size is perfect because water parameters wont have drastic changes that can also kill the shrimp. The lighting, divisions and substrate are all basically for the plants.

ClutchXRexx
ClutchXRexx - 8 years ago
its not/ He used dirted capped with gravel to provide a richer nutrient substraite for the plants to grow. Sand in front is likely where the feeding is done, makes it easier to clean up, plus with no plants in the front there really is no need to dirt it

Can these just be any kind of LED or are they special? I thought LEDs don't give the right light for plants to thrive.
Bob Saget
Bob Saget - 8 years ago
Kronikwookie true but most basic aquarium plants are not that demanding on what wavelength of light they receive... just don't expect a rig like that to work on corals or on some of the more sensitive plants, but what one would notice is the plants will grow differently then under fluorescent or HID.
Dan M
Dan M - 8 years ago
Depends on the wavelengths of light used (and strength). LEDs tend to be a very narrow band of light, so if they're not the right wavelengths, they can be a waste. They often concentrate on bands around 450nm (blue) and, mostly 650nm (red) for grow lights.

why do you do red and blue leds???
Vince Kim
Vince Kim - 8 years ago
It might seem that way, but the real reason is that plants utilize the red and blue spectra of light for growth/vegetation and budding. Blue lights help plants to grow, whereas red light helps the plant to reproduce. The white lights are left to fill in the missing spectra of light, but with led's that's also not entirely true.

First of all your using way to much termal past. a quarter of that would have been more then plenty.
Secondly I personaly prefer slightly bigger led's 5 or 10 watts as opposed to these 1 watts(?) First time I made a lighting system for my 50ltr i used these 1watts aswell, they where oke ish. But am i glad i switcht to cree 10watts!
They are a bit more cost effective and it makes for a cleaner look imo.

Bob Saget
Bob Saget - 8 years ago
Freshfruitz baby tears does require high co2 and high light plus regular fert schedule... the farms grow it under sunlight and not fully submerged. That's why it usually wilts within a couple day.
ClutchXRexx
ClutchXRexx - 8 years ago
Baby tears are a high leveled plant. There very picky. High light is some what needed but CO2 injection is almost a must. Dirt is a good start. Everyone has diffrent conditions, id get some clippings and attempt to frow some. It requires frequesnt trimming to maintain tho other wise the bottom near the substraight will die due to low light once it gets thicker.

In Aus CRS&CBS LOW grade ranged fr $5-8(CR/CB is mor pricier than the other by 1-2$) hi-grade S/SS/SSS ranges fr $9-12, if body patterns, flowers & colors harder to come by will cost heaps more Easily $150-300+
