DIY Glass Waterfall

I give you an overview in the video, but a written step by step tutorial can be found here: http://www.ibuildit.ca/other%20projects/water-feature-1.html I ran into a free piece of glass with my company's logo sandblasted into the back, so I took it home and started to figure out how to turn it into a waterfall.

Awesome video and build, April! Wish I had found this earlier as it would of helped me avoid a few issues with my own that I'm just now starting to wrap up.. but you've still helped me with the water distribution. I have a similar PVC set up to you but I wasn't sure how to make the cuts, whether to do long strips, or whether to just drill holes. Having seen this I'm definitely going to take your advice and drill holes angling them up. Out of curiosity, what LPM / GPM pump did you use for this?

Great project April. Very neatly presented too. Compliments to the video operator too. One suggestion for lighting the glass, if you could place an LED strip lighting on the top or even along any one side directly in contact with the edge of the glass pane; it will enhance the lighting effect & as a bonus, the top & sides covers would then be very slim. Great waterfall! Adding the odd plastic plant could possibly add to the beauty. Additionally those color changing christmas LED lights would also add some more variety. Best Xmas wishes.

Hey April great videos. Would you be able to use a piece of plexi glass in place of the "real" glass and still get the same effect? I was thinking of doing that and the simply etching my design in the plexi using a dremel
John Witherspoon
John Witherspoon - 9 years ago
+April Wilkerson Thanks! I was thinking of making getting a small piece and trying it. I figured etching it on the back would be the best bet so the front was smooth for the water.
April Wilkerson
April Wilkerson - 9 years ago
I honestly don't know. This was my first time to try something like this. I can tell you that in order for the water to run down smoothly over the glass, it has to be VERY clean and flawless. So I would think the plexiglass wouldn't work as well, but again I can't say for certain. If you were to etch in a design, it would need to be done on the back so the front surface remained smooth.

What?! I have to tell you, my heart sank a bit when you told Scott your company didn't even want to look at it. What a horrible attitude! You must have felt like you were kicked in the stomach. I know I would have felt that way if I put so much time and effort into a project for some one and they didn't even care to see it. I'm sorry they treated you like that April, that was seriously crappy of them.
The hell with them. They obviously don't deserve such a nice gesture. I would have taken out their piece of glass, got another piece of glass and etched my own logo on it, reinstall it and kept the fountain for myself!!!
Then I'd drop a dumbbell on their piece of glass to break it, put all the shards in a cardboard box and dump the box at the boss's door as I announce that I quit their company. I'm not usually vindictive, but something like that would have pissed me off deeply.
Well, onward to better things, I say! Leave them behind in the dust.
You go, girl!

+April Wilkerson ... they wouldn't even look at it ? That seems very disrespectful. I'm not sure what type of company it was, however, I would have thought the waterfall would have looked good in their entryway.
Funny how, now, you have companies that sponsor you. Given your rising fame, I wonder if the company you made that for has any regrets now... ?
April Wilkerson

The company I made it for (the company I use to work for) wouldn't even allow me to bring it up for them to look at. So I ended up burning the project. It was a waste and a shame.

Hey April...This was a really awesome project!  At my sign company we use glass etch vinyl which looks like real etching. We cut it with a plotter but it could be hand cut with a hobby knife or scissors. I'll have to try it to see how it holds up continuously under water but it could be a cheap option.
skips_builds S
skips_builds S - 9 years ago
That would work. I figured there would be condensation on the back but I have used it a lot on windshields with no problems. Pretty durable stuff so I think it would hold up

April Wilkerson
April Wilkerson - 9 years ago
You can certainly paint something, but do it on the back and not the front. It might be hard because you'll be painting the image reverse, but if you paint the surface where the water is flowing it will not flow evenly.

Wow. That is Freaking Amazing.  I was looking for How To Videos on building a Water Wall.  But this is much much much better and nicer than that.  And your step by step instructions are incredible. I want to build a bigger one that mounts on the wall. The base cant be that deep though. I probably have just over 1 foot in depth to play with, but about 4 feet wide.  If you are available, I would love to have any instruction or advice that you can give me.  I can give you the dimensions of what I would like to build.

Please let me know.

Thank you.

Thank you John. I appreciate the input and advice. Trust me. I thought about that and I am still investigating. I am going to mount this on the wall and even with that I will probably add either legs or a base underneath, just not as wide. Thankfully I have a friend who is a wood worker and welder who can give me some advice and also build whatever support(s) I will need. It will be a 4x5 glass waterfall. I will keep you informed and pics as I build and drive myself crazy with this. LOL. Thanks again for your input.

April I'm so beyond impressed with your handygirl skills!  Your video has MUCH more detail on the how to than all the others on here.  Would you mind answering a question if you have a minute?..  It sounds as if when the flex tubing was used over the 90 it was bad for some reason because it pooled up on top of the pump, however I'm totally clueless as to why this would be bad??   Again very impressive videos!  You put some of us guys to shame!  haha   : )
April Wilkerson
April Wilkerson - 9 years ago
Well thanks. : ) The reason it was bad was because the water would run back on the flex tube and all the way back down to the base of the sides. So it was running along the 2x4 that was holding the piece of glass and then pooling on the surface of the base. Even though I put two coats of protection on the wood, it was sloppy and since there was a fix, I decided to use it. ; )

April, do your projects come from the need to decorate your house or do you just have a very creative/artistic mind? I would have never thought to make a waterfall out of the glass you got from work. Thank you.
Jeff Martinez
Jeff Martinez - 9 years ago
Well that was very cool that you did save it from the trash.  I was just trying to get into the head of "April Wilkerson" to see is you were the instant artistic type or if you were more like me, "it'll come to later" type.  Thanks for responding, and for your great work that you post, I really appreciate you April.
April Wilkerson
April Wilkerson - 9 years ago
Yes most of my projects come from the need to decorate my home. That's why I got into the hobby in the first place. I wanted to fix up my home but didn't have the money to buy the things I wanted, so I decided to try and make them. After the first project I just kept going. Projects like this, I saw the glass heading towards the trash and didn't instantly think it should be a waterfall....but I knew it was way too cool to be thrown away. I kept it around for a month or so, waiting for a good idea to hit me. It was when I went to one of my favorite restaurants and saw a wall of theirs that is a waterfall....that's when I was struck with the idea of making this. So it wasn't me being creative, it was really me just taking inspiration from something around me. :)

Do you use any type of water treatment to prevent it from turning into a Frog colored pond? :) LOL... maybe just a little chlorine in the water but not enough to create a chlorine smell... I don't exactly like green slimy water..  This could also be a nice add on to a small fish tank/pond to help add O2 to the water and keep it circulating... The fish in the bottom would be an added attraction but increase the maintenance of it all.... Maybe some plants in the water would also be an additions...
I can also tell you some tricks to illuminate the glass itself rather than just shining lights on it... I'll be doing one for our business very soon. I use templates and sand blast the letters an patterns into the glass.

Very nice! I really enjoy taking materials that are going to be thrown away and making something. I've gotten alot of work by showing what can be done with throw aways. If you have not yet, I would show you finished product to the boses at work. They might commission a similar piece for their office or for themselves. I can't count how much work I've gotten doing that. Great work.

Hey April. Really loved the way you described in your step-by-step tutorial. I have one question. I am trying to build a 6 feet tall Wall water fountain similar to what you built in this video. Can I use Acrylic Sheets instead of glass? Its mentioned that they are 20% tougher than the normal glass. I will be using 500 gph pump as it is ideal for 8 feet high fountains and I couldnt find anything for 6 feet. Rest were for 4 feet high fountains. In order to prevent water from flowing out through the edges of the glass, is it advisable to put some clay material on the edges..to be on safer side? As it won't be visible because of the side plywood planks.

April Wilkerson - 9 years ago
Hi Nakul, I don't build these as a living and only have the experience from this single one I built...but I can tell you that in order for the water to run down evenly, the glass needs to be super super clean and smooth. It was really difficult to get the glass clean for the water to flow evenly, so for that reason I'm not sure how well another material like acrylic would work. You could always give it a try but I would bet that the water will end up dividing and not coming together. You could try the clay for the sides, I don't see why that wouldn't work. I just punched holes in the tube about 1 1/2" in from the sides so that water wouldn't get the sides wet. : ) Good luck!

Hi April, beautiful job..I'm building one now ..but I have some problems, the water doesn't go nicely on the glass , drips on the sides ..maybe because I'm using a plexiglass..what is your thoughts..thank you
April Wilkerson
April Wilkerson - 9 years ago
I have never used plexiglass so I'm not sure, but I would venture to say it is the problem. Even with glass....it has to be super clean for the water to flow evenly. If there is even a speck of dirt or lent on the glass, it will make the water split. If you are looking for a cheap piece of glass, I would look at Goodwill or a old window.

Hi... Nice  job.
1. One question, in your video did mentioned the piping hole was facing up. What happened when the pump stop?
Will it go around the pipe and making a water drop...

2. I built one of this but limited space at the front (about 4") therefore when the pump stopped it create droplet then cause splashing when it hit water at the bottom catchment. My glass was slanted a bit...

Any good advise is highly appreciated.

Thank you.

April Wilkerson
April Wilkerson - 9 years ago
Oh I understand your question. Yes, when I turn the pump off, the water will slowly stop then it will drip until there isn't anymore. Since I have a larger space, it doesn't splash on the wood. Since you don't have a large deck area and it's creating a splashing...maybe you can try putting a gutter or catch pan under there to catch the water first then dispense it into the tank. Instead of the water just falling directly into the tank of reserve water. This will deaden the nice sound some, but it might solve the splashing problem.

Hi! I'm currently in the process of designing and building a desktop version of a glass waterfall
I'm planning for it to be about 12" in height and 6" in width
I was having some problems establishing a system for the water distribution, and this video helped me tremendously with that

It would also really help me if you told me what the GPH of your water pump was
You mention that you marked off 1" margins for the water holes, but only ended up cutting holes every other inch. Wouldn't the 1" margins provide better water merging? Or is there something I'm not considering?
Do you have any other advice for managing water pressure and getting the water to merge well?

Thanks a lot!
April Wilkerson
April Wilkerson - 10 years ago
: ) Hello. Wonderful, I'm glad it has helped you some. I have more information in the written tutorial found here: http://www.ibuildit.ca/other%20projects/water-feature-1.html My pump is a 130-170 GPH and the reason I drilled a hole every other inch was because I didn't want to kill my water pressure. I started off with very tiny holes and very few and just played with it from there. If you make them too large or drill too many, then some won't have enough mojo to actually create a stream of water that hits the glass....instead it will just run out and slide down the hose/tubing or create a steady drip. So I would suggest drilling tiny holes and every two inches just to start with. See how that goes and you can always add more. Let me know how it turns out!

Hi April, Excellent presentation of a project of which would be very expensive to buy.  I ran across this You Tube presentations and it caught my interest.  I have two separated panes of tempered glass from a 3 foot by 6 ft patio door.  Your water fall project has given me some ideas on building one out of the glass rather than smashing it.  I do sandblasting and art work so this will be an upcoming project that I will do soon. Thank you for sharing the insight in this excellent project.    I might add that I see some outstanding talents of which you have displayed in your presented projects.   I think you can hold your own in the mostly male dominated  woodworking field.  You should be proud of your ability as I can see that they can become truly amazing in the years to come.

Thanks for the insight.  I have built quite a few things around the house and probably could have went out and purchased something cheaper sometimes, but nothing would be gained.  I find myself looking around the house somedays admiring what my two hands put together and feeling a great sense of pride.  My projects don't always turn out perfect, but that just adds to the character.

Nobody in my family is interested in woodworking. I picked it up because I wanted to start improving my home, aesthetically but also in function. I didn't have the money to buy the things I wanted, so I went and bought some wood, borrowed some tools, and just started figuring it out. After my first project I was hooked. : ) Now I want to make everything.

Hm, I'm not sure. I don't know enough about acrylic glass (or waterfalls) to know if it would create any problems. Maybe you can google it and see if anybody has experimented with it. It turned out great!  And yes, sometimes you just have to tinker with something until you finds that sweet spot.  Keep the videos coming.

Thanks Liam. I'm glad you like the sound....it was actually my intention originally to put in a guttering system to catch the falling water and set it quietly back into the tub (you see the vinyl and PVC in the background of the video), but several different people threatened me if I touched the sound of the water. haha, I didn't realize running water was so pleasing to people. Now, wake up and go enjoy your weekend. ; )

Hello Jim. Well I am going to figure out how to give it to my company then see if they will allow me to put it on display somewhere at our office. : ) Maybe in the lobby or a conference room. Once I see where it will be permanently, then I'll stain and seal it. Cheers.

Really?! : D Thank you Marcelo. I bought my pump at Lowes because it was during winter and it just so happen that they had one left on the shelf. However, I as at Home Depot the other day and they also sell fountain pumps. Local plant nurseries also carry them.

It seems your videos are you showing things that were built by someone, instead of showing you building something.  very disappointing

Well said April! Some people just don't use their heads before they start using their mouth! (or fingers in the case of the internet)

Keep up the great work, and don't let the haters get you down. The projects and tips you are sharing are greatly enjoyed and appreciated.

God bless!

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but my channel is not like the other woodworking/DIY channels. Instead of giving you the steps in video form, I do it in written form. It takes a lot of time to stop every step and make sure what I'm doing is captured in a photo that will explain it...I can only imagine how time consuming it would be to always be moving around a video camera instead, then editing the film to make something worth watching. At the end of the day, I am doing these projects for myself. Meaning, if I didn't have a blog or youtube channel, I would still be doing these projects....however, I want to pass along information on the chance that somebody else could benefit from my build, so doing a video wrap up of my project is the compromise to myself. If it ever gets to the point where I no longer enjoy doing my projects because the backend of things (video/blog/tutorial) takes all the enjoyment out of it, then I will stop. I am not getting paid to do this. If I did it full time for a living, then I would spend the hours making videos. Have a good day.

Thanks Jim. I don't know if I would call them excellent....I just keep trying things until they work and do what I want....so maybe the correct way to say it is I have stubborn problem solving skills. ; )
