As I put in text form in the video: I can no longer recommend this for pets as it has too many steps to ensure safe building of the structure. I would just build it for decoration.

anvesha verma - 7 years ago
which glue you have used? please do mention all the materials required with proper names
LizardLandscapes
LizardLandscapes - 7 years ago
List of Materials

Polystyrene(styrofoam) I get mine at Home Depot.

You can use liquid nails for a glue -I've been using Loctite's power grab -it has less odor.

Caulking gun -for the liquid nails or Loctite. Here you can find a few tips for how to use a caulk gun.

Knife (dollar store)

Non-sanded grout (white is the cheapest -I use a brand called
Polyblend) I've also been using "Foam Coat" from the Hot Wire Foam
Factory. (hotwirefoamfactory.com)

Cement color (optional)

Acrylic paint (any cheap kind will do)

A dollar store water bottle -I usually use three or four.

Non-toxic all surface sealant -I've used "Mod Podge" for dry environment lizards, and

"Shields All" for high humidity environment lizards. Shields All can be found here: www.hytechsales.com/prod50.html

Non-toxic fine grain sand (I've been using sandtastik -internet)

Paintbrush (two inch for the grouting process) smaller ones for if I paint.

Dust mask

Rubber gloves

I got everything at home depot except the acrylic paint, the
sealant and the dollar store water bottles and the fine grain sand. You
should be able to find most of this stuff at
an arts and crafts store. The "Shields All" can be found at this
address: www.hytechsales.com/prod50.html

For the waterfalls you will want to get aquarium grade silicone (I got mine at Home Depot)

LizardLandscapes
LizardLandscapes - 7 years ago
Everything was done to make this non-toxic, but that doesn't guarantee that something won't break down. It could fall apart if the crab starts picking at it. I would go with something from the pet store.

Amazing work. But don't worry, there's no need to freak out over the silicone "toxins". The thing that I guess was burning your eyes and mucous membranes a bit was just dilute acetic acid, aka vinegar. Okay, if it was super concentrated you could actually get hurt, but you won't find that outside of a lab. Working with aquarium silicone is probably less harmful for your eyes than chopping onions! And no need to go crazy washing the thing after it's cured. If you can't smell it anymore that's because the acetic acid is all evaporated, and that's the only water-soluble thing there was to begin with.

Ive just completed a lizard waterfall using the greatstuff foam to simulate the rock texture. I found out that when sealed with multiple coats of foam coat with the bounce additive and painted and sealed it is still very sensitive to temperature changes and cracks very easily from the expansion and contraction of the greatstuff foam. I only found this out when i installed it and put a heat light about 10 inches away from it. This caused it to start forming large cracks within 10min....

Hi there. I found your tutorials amazingly helpful and inspiring when building my 4ftx4ftx2ft viv for my water dragons. I have watched many of your uploads and would like to suggest burning your polystyrene around the edges to create a rock like effect that has worked brilliantly for me. I have only used long stem cooker lighters brought from a £ shop with a can of gas and have found it to be far more effective and it saves a lot of mess that i found with the carving! which is always a bonus to me lol. good luck in the future and i hope to see more upload

AHH I bet my tree frogs would LOVE this. I want to get a larger tank for them but I would like to design it to be a naturalistic terrarium. I already have several plants/live moss growing for them, which they seem to really enjoy, but I'd like to provide them some more room and climbing features. A waterfall like this would be perfect for that.

In this video you have sealed the raw poli with a "tile grout". In another video you used " foam sealer'..  I live in South Africa and trying to find a sealer
for that 1st seal. Now I am wondering if your grout and our grout would be the same product.  I was wondering if I could add a bit of silicone or wood glue to make it a bit more flexible, to save cracking and chipping.  The last seal I will use a general acrylic sealer sure that will be okay.
LizardLandscapes
LizardLandscapes - 9 years ago
Yeah, I used to use tile grout, and it worked well, but not as good as foam coat.  I would think any type of non-sanded grout will work, -you might have to experiment with the adding of silicone or wood glue -it sounds like a good idea.

Think about this Idea!. I love what you got in the video.. what if you Add Humidifier on the other end .make it just like the water fall in the video  just with Mist coming off the top of the mountain.. Think about it!!   In my mind it looks like a volcano  About to Erupt any min. Or a Mountain  with clouds passing by..

I Have a ReptiBreeze 24" X 24" X 48" Goal for next year get another Reptibreeze same size an attach it to the  same one, I have an Cut middle screen out so it's one large Screen Box 48" x 24 " x 48" An PVC Tree Stand like the one in my Video Clip, just much larger scale, And Make a  Water Fall like in the Video. Just add some of My own ideas..

This helped so much! I'm building my two Ball Pythons a new cage and I though it would be cool to make a running water piece because they hate drinking from their bowl and with all my other pets they prefer moving water. So I thought I would have a water fall in a small tub then that water flow into a PVC pipe cut in half into another bucket where a hidden pump is that will pump it back into the water fall where I'll have some filter stuff.  but this helped a lot with stuff!

This is great! Just the thing I was looking for! I got a corn snake and he is ready for a bigger terrarium. I kept my eye on him for a while making sure he was alright and to get to know him. He loves water so I was looking for something to make for him that keeps fresh (water pump / filter) and where he can just sit down in the water and relax! Ofcrouse I would put some fences @ the waterfal so that he doesnt crawl up in there. The ONE big problem with corn snakes is that they are master of escape. So I think I need to make everything a little bit more closed then this project. Thank you so much for this nice video and for the ideas! The only thing I am not sure of is that while heating the temp up to the temp the snakes need wouldn't that release any toxic air in the terrarium? or in the water? Ofcourse his waterfal will be on the coolest area of the terrarium. Can it be dangerous?

Unfortunately they're just too time consuming for me to be able to sell at a reasonable price.  For example the Castle took around 25 to 30 hours to complete, at just $15 an hour that would get quite expensive, and then there's the cost of supplies, and the shipping! So at this point and time I can only entertain "offers I can't refuse".

I don't see how a Bearded Dragon would drown in there.  I want to purchase a small waterfall for my dragon.  But there may be other problems.
With a DIY fall like this, would a dragon scratch pieces off of it with his claws?  This woud be a choking hazard plus possibly toxic.
Also, could you keep the water clean.  It would have to have a good bio and chemical filter but since it is still small and artificial it might harbor lots of bacteria and possible even protozoan parasites.

+Caitlin Mann  Actually for something that small shouldn't house anything, only thing that can is some cherry shrimp.

Almost any type of fish needs at least 10 gallons ore more.
Caitlin Mann
Caitlin Mann - 10 years ago
to some degree, yes. im not sure if the liquids hes covering the Styrofoam in are toxic to fish but the foam itself shouldnt harm them unless they digest it. The waterfall pump can be used in an aquarium but it cannot be fully submerged in water. maybe 5 inches or less. Youd need to have really small pond type fish or newts for this.

That's fantastic! A couple of questions if I may? Is that tile grout that you use?As I am in Australia, we do not always have the same material or alternatively, it has a different name. How strong is the finished product? Can it withstand the rigours of a bearded dragon wandering back and forth all day?
LizardLandscapes
LizardLandscapes - 10 years ago
It is tile grout.  The more layers of grout you use the stronger it is.  For waterfalls -I wouldn't recomend for bearded dragons.  Non-waterfall projects can hold up to dragons wear and tear.

Wow this is really impressive. Thanks for posting this. Could you incorporate a fogger/mist maker into the design? I'd really like to see creatures and plants living on this wonderful landscape you've created. I can just picture a few miniature ferns leaning over the edges of the pool and perhaps a few brightly coloured amphibians scattered about the place. Would it be possible to create a small bog filter, adjacent to the main pool, to naturally remove nitrates and such?

Hi! Can I use a pulverizer /sprayer for that dark grey acrylic paint layer after the grout was applied or a wide brush (even if it takes more time to cover the project)? I only found electric paint guns, they are expensive. And one more: I saw you applied acrylic sealant before testing the first time the project, can I buy any acrylic sealant or it must be written on it that it can be painted? Thamks!
