Escarpment Nature Aquarium by James Findley - Step by Step

Visit the aquascape journal for more info http://www.thegreenmachineonline.com/blog/escarpment-nature-aquarium-james-findley In this 23 minute video, you will see professional aquascaper, and founder of The Green machine- James Findley creating a planted aquarium from scratch. We'll take you step by step through the process so you can understand the technical and artistic decisions James makes at each stage. James is using one of the most popular sized aquariums on the market- a 60 cm wide, by 30 deep, by 36 cm high, 64.8 litre ADA Cube Garden. ADA Cube Gardens are made from low-iron, higher clarity glass, which results in a brighter, more vibrant view of your planted tank. James is well known for creating Supertanks such as Nature's Chaos, Arizona, and Reciprocity, so it is interesting to see him planting a more average sized home aquarium. Why did you put air pump? What's the purpose of using water plants? You can use plastic instead. Aren't the water plants the one's that are responsible for producing oxygen for the fish?

I liked this one with lesser growth. Too much of the hardscape is covered. It's like watching Bob Ross paint. He does a stunningly beautiful landscape, then screws it all up by painting giant trees over most of it.

That is beautiful!

Doesn't the minerals in the soil and additives pollute the water for the animals and how would one vacuum that substrate with out mixing everything together and depleting the additives? How do you avoid algal blooms with all of that lighting before the tank is established?

this looks amazing but is this gardening underwater hobby or fish enthusiast (whatever that's called!) and I guess it restricts the no. of fish you can have in the tank based on volume of water per fish? not being critical , it looks fantastic and would love it..

NOTE: possibly dumb

do you have to clean this tank ever again ? or do the plants and the soil you used and the coal which acts as a filter keep it clean as long as you have the tank ? because I'd love to have a turtle or a snake of some kind in a tank like that ! with the fish a semi aquatic tank like that is breathtaking!!]

I see that shrimp can benefit the aquarium by feeding on algae. what is the green machines opinion on aquatic snail? can these be used as well and has James ever used them in any of his aquariums?
Garrett Everett
Garrett Everett - 4 years ago
You have to be careful with the type of snails in a planted aquarium, especially in an open-topped ones like James is fond of using (they can be escape artists!). Nerite snails are a good choice, as they are efficient algae-eaters that don't go for plants, and they don't breed in freshwater so it is easy to control the population. Digging snails like Malaysian trumpet snails are also not great for a planted aquarium, as they can uproot plants.

I've personally had an apple snail that left my plants alone, so I bought a few more - it turns out that they were a different subspecies of apple snail that went to town on supposedly snail-proof plants like java fern and anubias! Do your research first and you hopefully won't be surprised!

If you do choose to keep snails, they can be a surprisingly fascinating addition to a tank - I love mine, even though they are in the process of "redesigning" my planted aquarium.

Hi, I absolutely love your work! I have been browsing through your website as I am considering setting up tank similar to one in this video. But I have noticed many of the tanks do not have a heater in them. I thought all freshwater aquariums needed one? Am I just missing something? Or are you selecting plants and fish that can survive on room temperature? I would definitely love to have some sort of external heater so the glass filter and co2 pipes are the only equpement in the tank!

Yes you need external filter and co2 difuser, oxygen y produced by the plants.
Ironiic zero
Ironiic zero - 5 years ago
Filters yes, if you have fish that is. if you don't have fish in the tank than you don't need a filter. but you do need something to produce flow. this can be done with a filter, powerhead, circulation pump etc

oxygen tank? Basic science tells me that plants produce oxygen so why do you need an oxygen tank?

There must be a recommended day length for this to balance the oxygen concentrations every day. ~ 16 hours of day light?
Natural Ponds Lakes & Streams by Spring Creek Aquatic Concepts
Natural Ponds Lakes & Streams by Spring Creek Aquatic Concepts - 5 years ago
+Ironiic zero Actually I thought about it a second time. Without active water circulation something on the order of even ~10 hours would maintain oxygen concentrations since a calm body of water can more easily maintain O2 supersaturated conditions over time. From there it just depends on which species of plants are utilized.
Ironiic zero
Ironiic zero - 5 years ago
16 hours of daylight will grow algae and that's it. if plants are healthy they will produce enough oxygen in the day and at night they won't strip alot of oxygen from the water

How often would you do a water change on a aquascape???
EpiK ReM
EpiK ReM - 5 years ago
+NeoMinerva I think 25% to 50% is ok based on all the info in the forums. or maybe experiment every once in a while do a large change. all other parts of the tank have to be balanced though. your lighting, filtration, fertilizing, etc. for hopefully a successful aqua scape.
Ironiic zero
Ironiic zero - 5 years ago
+NeoMinerva no its not. hundreds of aquarists including myself have zero issues with doing 50% WC every week. it's simple and easy. the fish and shrimps in my tank don't even care. most of the time the shrimp clean my hands and the fish explore more while the flow is off

+Zebedee Ellis I think 25% twice a week would be a much less stressful way of removing close enough of 50% residual water without creating the shock that a 50% water change would cause on some of the more sensitive inverts you would likely keep in a tank like this. 50% is just too much at once unless in an emergency.

Start with 7-8 hours and add/subtract from there. Every tank is going to be different so just play around with it until something works for you.

I really want to aquascape my aquaone 620T freshwater aquarium, but to achieve something like this do I have to use CO2??? If so would tablets work? Im afraid it will change my pH very suddenly.

CO2 is required for this layout, tablets would be insufficient and we do not recommend them.

Really well executed scape, but Pogostemon helferi is in very poor condition. In my opinion it would be wise to choose other species as a carpeting plant.

+mark suson A lot of effort has clearly gone into producing these scapes and videos. Considering their promotional and educational nature, and the fact that plants are a main feature and product, pronounciation certainly should matter. If not to you, then to the company as a matter of pride.

Great video! I love aquariums that use real plants and seeing them get made from start to finish is really interesting. I think I've watched each one twice, even the longer ones. I also like Mr. Findley's style of more minimal / simplicity versus other's highly detailed and super-controlled aquascapes that are a bit too flashy and violent for my tastes.
