idk how tall lol not very tall its more long than tall. my husband bought it from a indoor swapmeet a very long time ago...dont know it's dimensions.
almcloud
almcloud - 7 years ago
Kathleen Monsegue it should be about 13 inch tall, in which case I would suggest about 2 inch in the front with a roughly 5 inch slope in the back. It all depends on the plants you are using and the length of their roots.
Kathleen Monsegue
Kathleen Monsegue - 7 years ago
I wished I knew where my tape measurer is so I could measure the tank...its a lil bit bigger than a 10 gallon u would find at a petsmart or petco.

how many inches should i make the substrate in order to plant some aquarium plants in a 10 gallon tank?

oh ok i do want some nice planted slopes in my 10 gallon.
Kathleen Monsegue
Kathleen Monsegue - 7 years ago
is it necessary to use? I've seen a guy in youtube that used a piece of cardboard to divide it, but then he slowly took it out.
almcloud
almcloud - 7 years ago
Kathleen Monsegue it depends what type of scape you want to do. With time, the substrate will move, specially if you have heavy rocks on top. It can definitely help but I wouldn't say it's a must, it all depends on how you scape your tank.
Kathleen Monsegue
Kathleen Monsegue - 7 years ago
what is that the divider thing that you used and left inside the tank?
almcloud
almcloud - 7 years ago
Kathleen Monsegue It's called corrugated plastic and you can find it at hardware stores. It helps separating different types of substrate and also keeps it from "land sliding" with time. Thanks for watching!

anthony Pope Sagitaria its a bit easier to grow but make sure you get the dwarf type for foreground, unless you have a huge tank :)
almcloud
almcloud - 7 years ago
anthony Pope Thank you for the kind words. The type of plant is not the issue, is the type of soil you use, nutrients and Co2. The Hair Grass is a difficult plant and it'll require all of the above to thrive. Another detail would be that it grows fast and you have to keep up the trimming. On the other hand a type of Crypt would be easier to maintain. It's all up to you which route you want to take.

we can use small gravel in place of aqua soil right!!
almcloud

You could, but only if you don't want to plant natural plants. Most plant species won't survive in gravel, they need some sort of soil for nutrients.

How do you siphon the gravel?
almcloud
almcloud - 8 years ago
In a densly planted tank siphoning the gravel is a minimal task because the soil uses the "dirty stuff" ;) as fertilizer. That's the beauty of a planted tank with soil, it requires minimal maintenance since plants use most impurities from the water column and on top of the soil as ferts.
The only thing that requires a bit of siphoning is the sand when some particles of soil get carried on top of it.
Thanks for watching!

bunch of chemical bottles >.< wtf, i know its good but that was too many >.<
almcloud
almcloud - 9 years ago
Yes, it might look like a lot at first glance but if you check out their specs you'll see they all help plants grow on the long run. While you can add nutrients in the water column as you go, it is difficult to make sure there's everything plants need at soil level as well. These elements exist in nature and the plants require them to thrive. The professional aquascapers are using them successfully and I wanted to follow the standards and see the results. You have to remember that we take plants out of their natural habitat and into a small artificial one, therefore the more nutrients you provide them, the better will thrive. The hardy_er plants you have, they can survive with less nutrients.
Thanks for watching!

You're welcome :-)
When you have the new tank syndrome, is almost inevitable not to get algae, but on the long run it does help. The main thing is to be able to maintain a good balance between light, nutrients and CO2 (specially with a high-tech tank)

almcloud

It depends how much surface you want to cover with sand. For about a third of the aquarium bottom I would get a large bag of 8kg plus a 2kg extra bag just in case.
Ryan Knowles
Ryan Knowles - 9 years ago
Thanks for posting this! I am in the planning stages for a 20 gallon and I was considering doing the two tone like you did (with the decorative sand and the plant substrate). I was curious about how much sand you used? Would a 2kg bag do for what you did here? I am also going to do a more lowtech setup so I will have to use some different plants.

How are you able to supply such deep substrate for your tank? I'm just starting out with a 10 gallon planted tank and I'm running into odor issues and issues with the gravel vac and plants coming loose while trying to catch debris under the substrate. Any advice? I used sand in a 5 gallon months ago but it began to smell like sulfur even when I stirred it. I feel like I'm missing vital information and it's difficult to find reliable sources.
Angela Brancato
Angela Brancato - 9 years ago
If you are getting a sulfur smell and your substrate is to deep, you may be having anaerobic conditions. If you're plants have the root systems to go well into the substrate it will help combat this. If you have fish in that tank I can imagine you're having issues with them as well.
almcloud
almcloud - 9 years ago
PS: Regular sand not refusal sand LOL
almcloud
almcloud - 9 years ago
I am using ADA soil and sand, and not having that odor problem. I used other type of planted tank soil too. It could be the sand you are using, try replacing it with a soil used for planted tanks, the regular sand will lose it's breathing space with time because it will compact itself after a while.
I don't vacuum the soil where the plants are, it is not necessary for planted tanks in my opinion. I only vacuum the loose soil that gets mixed with my sand bed every now and then. Note: the ADA sand has a much larger granule than the refusal sand and it doesn't compact itself. It's like made of mini rocks :) I hope this helps a bit. Good luck!

That was fun to watch.  Thanks for doing this!  It is a lot of hard work to film this and put it all together.

If I ever go ADA this will be a great resource.  I'm not even on CO2.  I just tossed a 40 pound bag of organic dirt and some other things into my 120.

I'm never going to be able to grow HC (Dwarf Baby Tear) and that plant might honestly make me want to take the CO2 jump.

Just fyi, with the ADA soil, you don't have to fertilize the tank for a few months. I learned that with my tank and it got algae. :/

Great video, I appreciate all the hard work and detailed info you gave. Your tank is gonna look amazing. It's funny, I just did my first planted tank, tried a little aquascaping and came up with almost the exact same layout you used. Yours is MUCH better tho, I had to use random hardscape materials I had around the house and just a few beginner plants. But learning is the fun part. Thanks for sharing! :)

Very nice. My biggest downfall- aqua scraping. You made it look easy. Job well done

Thank you! That sounds interesting. The back glass is covered with privacy foil on the outside, the one used for windows. It gives it a foggy look simulating the sky :) I will install some lights behind it to simulate the sun
