Love this channel! Just about to start our water feature but I do not understand why you placed underlayment in the basin, even went so far as to create a sandwich with underlayment/liner/underlayment, but didn't use underlayment in the streambed or falls area?
ponddude69
ponddude69 - 8 years ago
It is mainly done as cheap insurance.  It helps protect the liner from the sharp corners of the blocks.  You also have a lot more hydraulic pressure inside the basin, hence the reason for underlayment there and not in the stream.  The stream has very little additional weight/water pressure.  Hope this helps.

Wish we had that type of soil in Oklahoma. It's pitiful here. Very envious...

When setting the pump inside the container, is the pump touching the botton of the bin or is it being held up by the pipe that's attached to it?

This looks great... what is the average width of the stream, the video says its about 10' long (~3m). If the kit will do up to 16' stream, what is the maximum width of stream as the basin will only hold a certain amount of water - ie the basin has to be able to hold 2x the amount of water in stream.

+Bob Downe I'd recommend taking the free training course on Pondless Calculations if you're interested in doing a custom Pondless Waterfall. There are tons of helpful courses on http://training.aquascapeinc.com/, but look specifically at Beginner Category > Project Specification

Thanks for answer. 1500gph per foot will give a good flow over the waterfall as a comment further down says the feature in the video was set to 3000gph. My question was really I suppose how deep and wide can the maximum of the stream be.. I think I've worked it out.

Capacity of the basin= 106gals
The basin needs to hold all the water in system if it is turned off, hence it needs to be at least 2x the capacity of stream, so stream can contain 53gals maximum.

Assuming a max stream length of 16' as per kit, 22" width of stream the depth can be worked out:
16 x 1.83 x Depth x 7.48 = 53gals
Depth = 53 / (16 x 1.83 x 7.48)
Depth will be approx 3"

I suppose the answer really is, the stream can be any width (after the spillway) as long as the 53gal capacity is not breached.

Have I got this wrong?
Cheers Bob

+Bob Downe All of the Pondless Waterfall Kits come with the Waterfall Spillway that has a 22" opening. You can make the stream wider if you'd like, but a good rule of thumb is that you will need at least 1,500 gallons of water per hour per 1 foot of stream width.

very helpful thanks, where did he put the cord for the light? does it go underwater or do you have the connection on land so you don't get electrocuted?
GrowingDownUnder
GrowingDownUnder - 9 years ago
Thanks, ok if I buy the waterproof light I'll cover the plug part of the cord from water. I'll have a look for rocks too, we have leaves as a problem so we are now thinking of a pondless spillway for easy maintenance. Love your vids & work, some of the best ponds i've seen. Every thought from fish species, temperatures, size/depth, filtration, pumps, oxygen, algae, aquatic plants, landscaping, designs, etc..you's got it all covered!

+GrowingDownUnder The cord from the light fixture is waterproof, but it's then connected to the transformer outside of the water since the transformers are not waterproof.
