I live in upstate NY, near the Canadian border. It gets very cold here, do i need to feed the fish during the winter? I read somewhere not to feed them at all after October

When the temperatures start to get lower we recommend feeding your fish Cold Water Fish Food. This will allow the fish to get the proper nutrients to get them through the winter. You can feed them this until the water temperature drops below 50 degree. After that the fish will hibernate through the winter and will not need to be feed.

I'm surprised at the emphasis on removing organic matter on the bottom of a pond. I live in Maine, where there are vernal pools with several inches of leaves and debris on the bottom. It provides habitat for tadpoles, salamander larvae and a host of invertebrates to hide. What you propose seems to make sense if you only want fish in a pond.

Hello I have a question for you. For the winter you said to take out the pump, but what about the skimmer? Will it not crake in the winter time? My location is chicago il. Thanks

+1232saulius No, you do not need to remove the skimmer, it will not crack. However if it does it has a lifetime warranty.

HI.. some great suggestion but why would you lay that net on top of the water?  We gave up using the net because the big fish are jumpers and would get tangled in it. We raised it a bit and then had troubles with birds getting underneath and dying. So we do not use the pond net anymore. My do stay out all winter with the aid of a heater and a 4-stone bubbler placed around the pond edges. The pond used to be 3' deep but now that debris has built up it is shallower, but fish seem to manage just fine. This is the 12th winter for one fish, and this will be the 7th winter for the other 12.

It just depends on the pond. Some fish won't have any problems at all. When our construction crew installs netting they will sometimes stake a pole on each end of the pond, tie a string to them across the pond, and then drape the net over it. Think of it almost like a tent of netting. Easy to do and will help with fish that jump and can make leaf cleanup easier too!

will this work for raised ponds as well?

is there any way to insulate it so that it wont?

+MattTanks Allowing the fish to hibernate can occur because the dug-in pond is closer to the earth's core, which keeps ice only frozen the first few inches of the water. If the whole pond was above ground, it would freeze solid.

The skimmer catches debris off the surface of the pond, but during the fall season it can't always keep up with the numerous leaves falling into the pond. A pond net helps catch this once-a-year excess.
