I've never seen someone use cat litter in an aquarium before despite being quite interested in planted tanks.
Does it not pollute the water?
What's the purpose of it?

+Hannah Park It is zeolite. Similar to expensive filter media like seachem matrix. It's a great habitat for beneficial soil bacteria.

Something important i want to ask all experienced reef keepers, does adding a thick layer of gravel going to help curb down nitrates or do the opposite ?
Mikebiscuits
Mikebiscuits - 10 years ago
keeping a layer of gravel or ADA power sand helps to keep the planting substrate from becoming compacted which in turn makes it anaerobic (this is bad because it causes harmful gases to build up and release into the aquarium).

I take it you are not in the United States?
The reason I ask is because those bags of cat litter and sand look of a different country with KG, etc. on them…
So is it just basic cat litter and what kind of sand?

Thanks!

P.s. or do they sell that sand and litter here in the U.S.?
darkiee69
darkiee69 - 8 years ago
The cat litter is a zeolite based one. I don't think that particular brand is sold in the US, but you can probably find a similar one.

The log is releasing Tannins. You need to soak it in some type of tube for several weeks to minimize them. It will work best in hot water. If you have a filter, they will eventually start to go away with normal water changes. They aren't necessarily bad either. I know for a lot of freshwater fish, they are beneficial. Can't speak on behalf of turtles however.

AquaticDesign
AquaticDesign - 12 years ago
If you don't have any CO2 you are limited in choosing plants. You can only choose plants that don't need additional CO2. There are some plants that grows quickly without CO2 but most don't.
Dan Tiburcio

the litter will do the same thing as -first layer pure laterite- for plants in aquariums for for a lesser cost and with less effectivness.. if you have to buy a big box or bag of litter just for a tank i suggest going to petsmart and getting a small box of -first layer pure laterite- and your laughing. Your plants will have plenty neutrients for moooonths and you can use any substrate on top and plants will still thrive.. Just a suggestion incase your starting an aquascape

The litter acts as a mineral depot, if the plants require more minerals than there is in the water column, they can take up minerals from the litter.
