The Title, "Setting Live Rock"...the intro, "I'm going to start this tank with dry rock". Maybe the title should say, "Fiddling, Decorating...with Dry Rock"

Any recommendations on if your aquascape is already set up in your nano but you're not quite happy with how it looks with water, right now aquarium is in the cycling process, would this be a good time to redo, or should I wait until cycling process is complete?

If was me would def not rest the rock directly on the glass bottom of the tank... I use either small patio or interlocking stones or flat base rocks on the bottom... or that plastic grate that people use to cover aquarium tops and rest the rock on it!

Licensed2420 most people put the rocks on the glass so that the rock structure is strong because of you put it directly on sand the rock structure could potentially fail and cause disasters

if you are using a bacterial additive follow their directions, if not -as soon as the ammonia hits 1ppm, do a 100% Water Change.

+daniel wallengren I've never used silicone when setting live rock. I like how the putty hardens and blends into the aquascape. I don't think silicone would work as well.

im not much of a fan of a boulder in the middle of a tank, and then some more rocks. I like lines and flow.... leave room for the corals to fill

Yes, it will. You have to 'seed' the tank with the purple or pink algae and it'll grow on its own, or you can use additives like Purple-Up to grow that coralline algae to grow. :) It can take a couple of months to a year to get unboosted algae to cover your rocks real well. :/ At least that's from my extremely limited experience.

You do need to make sure its mixed thoroughly - I've never had a problem with it losing grip.

We do not rinse live sand. The water was clear by the morning.

You prefer rocks to shift on their own when fish, corals, and water are in the tank? As Dave said, it is best the rocks are firmly on the bottom. Many LFS keep live rock in glass tanks and take rock in and our year after year with out the tank exploding. Glass is much stronger then you think. Caution recommended of course, but sand is not a good safety net.

We will do updates over time. We already made it through the first algae bloom and the tank is settling in nicely. It is still very new so I'm sure there will be more bumps in the road.

This is a really unique concept. I'm really looking forward to the updates as you cycle and stock this tank. It would be nice to see all the stages of a reef a tank from here on out. Including the green hair algae and possible cyano stage that us experienced reefers have dealt with.

Most of the nice shapely rock is only available as live rock. You need to buy it any dry it out yourself if you want to start with dry rock. We do have a good selection in stock now.

Lace rock is best for freshwater aquariums. It is not nearly as porous as live rock and will not have nearly as much filtration capacity. You can use a bit of it as base rock if you like.

Not a bad idea. This hobby is about patience and I'm ok to wait a few months for it to blend in. If I get impatient I'll just mount a coral over it.

I have stacked the live rock against the glass in most setups I've done including this Red Sea S400. There is nothing wrong with stacking it that way - its how most aquariums are setup.

Can you please tell me, is it OK for live rock to be in contact with the rear glass as in this video, or I should leave a place between glass and rock behind too? I am asking because somewhere I saw a guy telling that in this way the rock that is in a contact with glass behind is dead. Is this true?

You might consider using some ground dryed rock to cover the putty to make it blend in from the get go...

Interesting point. We have used DD's Aquascape Construction Epoxy to bind the rocks to glass in many setups over the years without any problems. We do usually fill the tank with water soon after the putty is used so that helps to prevent any rapid swings in temperature. Honestly I have not noticed this putty getting very hot during the curing process. In my opinion it is safe to use as I described.

Just a thought, but surely placing putty on the glass may cause a risk of damaging or cracking the glass due to the putty get extremely hot in the process of curing.

Reef putty isn't a rock-solid adhesive, it's really meant for stabilising wobbly rockwork. It's easily pulled apart with a little bit of force if the time comes where you need to do it, but it's strong enough to hold everything in place until then.

The putty is not that strong. The rocks will still come apart when you take them apart.

I discuss flow in our Wavemakers video. It's hard to give visual examples. You will start to know the high, med, and low flow areas of your tank as you move coral around.

Can you please make a detailed video related to flow? Like what is high moderate and low flow with visual examples perhaps? Whats better a standing wave or reef mode or both? How to deal with dead spots? How to use flow to maximize filtration? I cant seem to find a decent in depth answer to any of these. Just an idea. Love your videos :)
