Il Barbus tetrazona originario ha il corpo alto ed appiattito sui fianchi, pinna dorsale ben sviluppata e di colore nero con il bordo rossastro, tutte le altre pinne sono trasparenti e presentano delle sfumature rossastre sui bordi. La bocca è posizionata sulla parte inferiore e non presenta barbigli. La colorazione è grigio marrone e giallo, con sfumature rosse e possiede quattro fasce nere verticali da qui il nome tetrazona. Esistono alcune varietà di colore, create artificialmente dall'uomo: in una di esse le bande nere sono allargate fino a formare un'unica zona nero-verde con riflessi metallici lungo i fianchi del pesce (Barbo tigre Verde). Un'altra invece presenta caratteristiche tipiche dell'albinismo quindi le bande scure non sono presenti, ha livrea rosa-gialla e arancione ed è chiamato Barbo tigre rosso. E' un pesce da branco, quindi è consigliato inserirlo in numero non inferiore a 8/10 esemplari, ha un carattere pacifico ma è velocissimo, a volte piuttosto mordace con pesci con pinne a velo (Guppy, Scalari Betta o con pesci lenti come i Discus), convive bene invece con Botia e Trichogaster. è bene inserirli in una vasca capiente, Minimo in 60 litri caratterizzata da fondo sabbioso, nascondigli formati da pietre e piante robuste per non essere mangiate. Per tutti questi motivi è abbastanza consigliato per acquari curati nei dettagli, poiché non andrà a smuovere il fondo. La femmina è più arrotondata, mentre il maschio ha una corporatura più minuta e slanciata con colori più intensi attorno alla bocca. É un animale oviparo quindi le uova (circa 150-200) sono deposte sul substrato e la schiusa avviene entro 24 ore. La riproduzione è abbastanza facile specialmente in acquari privi di predatori.
