So this past week I was at the Aquatic Experience up in Chicago which is always a great show. However the best part of my Chicago Trip wasn’t even the Aquatic Experience. It was filming Oliver Knott aquascaping a 150 at my man Dave’s house. If you don’t know who Oliver Knott is, He is probably the most widely known Aquascaper on the Planet besides Takashi Amano. Oliver landed at around 3 and I met him at Dave’s. Ok so I’m shot from driving all day, but all I have to do is film. Oliver however had just gotten off a transcontinental flight from Germany, and now had to make a sick tank. He’s a beast and He didn’t disappoint. I pulled up and got a warm and hearty handshake greeting from Oliver. Step one. Prepare the hardscape rock. Oliver pick huge obsidian and smashed it up outside… Then we rolled in…. (I cut the piss outta my hand on the rock by the way...great way to start a weekend of a tradeshow where I'll be in and outta tanks. I was pumped that Dave’s wife had some food laid out for it. I’ve seen Oliver do a bunch of Nano tanks—they were sick, but they were not a 150. This tank had a few things working against him. I could tell he wasn’t pumped about both the over flows and the background. He made Dave cover the overflows with the same look as the center of the tank. He didn’t come out and say it, but I am sure he would have rather have had a blank slate then a work around. The first thing that struck me was how high he sloped up the gravel. It went up to a gradual 10 inches or so at the top You can see he didn’t have hardly a drop of water in the tank while he was doing it. Like none, I actually helped him sponge out almost all of it, something I have personally never done. There is no question this made it significantly easier to get everything roll (I have take the water lower in my tanks, but why haven't I tried this before?) Dislike doesn't always have to be malicious does it? Could just be that it's not to someone's taste and they are freely expressing that.
Not everyone likes my tank, yeah it upsets me because I love it but you can't please all of the people all of the time....
